“Plays doubles” refers to Crua’s Koala V2 Maxx, a two-person version of the Koala hammock tent. In a May 2020 announcement, Crua described updates to the Koala V2 design, but New Atlas reported that final weight and other hard specifications had not yet been released. The announcement is useful for understanding the concept and claimed revisions—not as a current specification sheet or confirmation that the Maxx is available today.
What was the Koala V2 Maxx?
New Atlas reported on May 29, 2020, that Crua was preparing to relaunch its Koala hammock as the Koala V2, with a two-person option called the Koala Maxx. The article said carrying one Maxx could reduce combined weight compared with taking two individual Koalas, but it gave no measured comparison. It also reported that the original Koala had raised over US$735,000 through crowdfunding; that is a historical figure attributed to New Atlas, not a current revenue or independently verified sales total. What changed in the V2 design?
New Atlas’s account of the 2020 announcement described these revisions. They are reported product claims, not results from independent testing:
- A larger reversible tarp intended to provide more weather coverage.
- Aluminum carabiners replacing the earlier steel ones.
- Tougher zippers and improved grommets for securing the spreader bars.
- Bug mesh wrapping around the hammock rather than covering only its top.
- Removable pockets, which could be taken off to save weight.
The announcement did not provide final product weights or other hard specifications, so it does not establish how much the components changed the total packed weight or how the shelter performed in particular conditions.

Does the two-person label mean it will suit any pair?
No. A two-person designation identifies the intended format, but by itself it does not establish a maximum load, usable dimensions, or whether two specific people will find the shared sleeping space comfortable. What does the Koala manual list in the kit?
Crua’s Koala instruction manual distinguishes a basic kit from a full kit. Because the manual lists Koala and Koala Maxx together, it does not prove that every current V2 Maxx package includes the same items. What should you check before setting it up?
Use the instructions supplied with the actual product for setup and safety. The Koala manual covers choosing suitably spaced trees and attaching the tree straps and carabiners. It also tells users to read the safety material, observe the product’s weight restrictions, select a safe hanging location, and keep flames away from the hammock. Do not infer a load limit from the “two-person” name; use the current model’s stated limit.
