Crescent Lighting’s RAW LED Flood Light and Street Light: What Its 2023 Design-Protection Announcement Shows

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crescent Lighting announced on June 30, 2023 that two outdoor LED products had received exclusive design protection: the CRS70 RAW LED Street Light, identified as Design No. 378535-001, and the CRF90 RAW LED Flood Light, identified as Design No. 378310-001. The announcement describes both as bright, energy-efficient, durable and locally manufactured in India.

That does not, by itself, prove that either luminaire has a granted utility patent, delivers superior performance, or meets a particular roadway or electrical standard. For contractors, designers and municipal buyers, the announcement is a reason to request technical and legal documentation—not a substitute for it.

It should not be confused with Crescent Lighting Solutions, a separate U.S. commercial-lighting distributor and procurement business, or with other historical and retail businesses using similar names.

The two products identified in the announcement

Product Stated application Design identifier
CRS70 RAW LED Street Light Street and roadway lighting Design No. 378535-001
CRF90 RAW LED Flood Light Floodlighting and outdoor illumination Design No. 378310-001

The product names and identifiers come from the June 30, 2023 IT Voice announcement, which attributes comments to Ankur Mehta, identified as Crescent Lighting’s founder and chairman.

“RAW” is part of the product branding. “CRS70” and “CRF90” appear to be model identifiers, but there is no supplied datasheet confirming that “70” means 70 watts or that “90” means 90 watts. Buyers should not infer electrical output from either number.

Patent or industrial design registration?

The announcement uses terms such as “patent” and “exclusive patent.” The identifiers supplied, however, are described as design numbers, and the available material does not independently identify the issuing authority, jurisdiction, filing date, grant date or exact protected features.

That distinction matters:

  • A utility patent generally protects a new technical process, system, mechanism or functional improvement.
  • An industrial design registration generally protects a product’s visual appearance or configuration, subject to the law of the relevant jurisdiction.

The careful description is therefore: Crescent Lighting announced that the CRS70 RAW LED Street Light and CRF90 RAW LED Flood Light received exclusive protection under the listed design numbers. The available announcement does not establish whether the protection covers a technical invention, product appearance, or both.

Before making a procurement, exclusivity or infringement assessment, request a copy of the registration certificate or an official registry record. Design protection does not prove higher efficacy, longer life, better glare control, or better roadway illumination.

What performance is actually documented?

Crescent’s announcement claims exceptional brightness, energy efficiency, durability, natural illumination and uniform illumination, along with local manufacture in India. Those are company or announcement claims, not independently verified performance results.

The supplied evidence does not provide:

  • Delivered lumens, input wattage or lumens per watt.
  • Correlated colour temperature, CRI, Duv or TM-30 results.
  • Beam distribution, optical type, candela data or BUG rating.
  • Power factor, total harmonic distortion or driver make and model.
  • Surge-protection ratings, including common-mode and differential-mode performance.
  • IP or IK ratings, operating-temperature limits or thermal test results.
  • Lumen-maintenance data, rated life or warranty term.
  • IES or LDT photometric files.
  • Independent laboratory testing or field-performance data.
  • BIS, CE, RoHS, DLC or other certification details.
  • Current public pricing, distributor information or confirmed availability.

“Brightness” is not a complete specification. A roadway luminaire must be assessed by delivered lumens, candela distribution, mounting height, pole spacing, road width, surface reflectance, uniformity and glare—not by a product photograph or a wattage label alone.

Likewise, saying a product is locally manufactured does not establish that every LED, driver, optic or other component is made in India. The announcement supports the narrower statement that the products are described as manufactured locally.

How to judge whether either product fits a project

Municipal and roadway projects

Prioritise verified photometry, roadway calculations, uniformity, glare and light-spill control, surge protection, driver replacement, warranty coverage, lifecycle cost, controls compatibility and demonstrated field performance. A distinctive or design-protected housing may offer visual differentiation, but it does not establish roadway compliance or value over the life of the installation.

Industrial and commercial sites

Assess uniformity, mounting flexibility, environmental ratings, thermal performance, maintenance access, replacement-part availability and compatibility with existing controls. A high-output floodlight may reduce fixture count, but poor optical control can increase glare, spill light and thermal stress.

Architectural and lighting-design work

Review the form factor, finishes, corrosion resistance, optical choices, colour consistency, visual comfort, photometric files and control-system integration. Design protection may matter to an architect specifying a recognisable appearance, but optical flexibility and serviceability usually matter more to long-term project performance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the products technically revolutionary: the available evidence does not include independent testing or technical patent claims.
  • Reading wattage into the model numbers: neither “70” nor “90” has been verified as electrical power.
  • Using “patented” without a jurisdiction: confirm the country, authority and right involved.
  • Treating marketing language as photometry: brightness and uniformity must be supported by measurements and calculations.
  • Ignoring roadway geometry: a street light cannot be approved from wattage or appearance alone.
  • Overlooking controls and maintenance: a standalone luminaire may not suit a connected municipal network or a facility’s replacement strategy.
  • Assuming local manufacture means local sourcing of every component: that conclusion is not supported by the announcement.

Availability and commercial relevance

The reviewed sources establish Crescent’s company identity and the 2023 announcement, but they do not establish a current public price, checkout route, distributor list or verified current product page for the CRS70 or CRF90. Buyers should contact Crescent through its official website and ask whether the exact models remain available, in which markets, with what lead times and through which authorised channel.

The announcement alone is insufficient for a construction specification or procurement recommendation. A project team should compare any quotation with competing luminaires using delivered lumens, efficacy, optics, surge protection, controls, certifications, warranty, serviceability and total cost of ownership.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
