Decide what the pile needs to do first. Then make its shape, placement, and upkeep fit that purpose.
Choose the purpose before styling the pile
Wood looks rustic by nature, but a considered outline and location help it feel like part of the garden rather than leftover material. The ideas below are practical design suggestions, not tested landscape designs. Most importantly, a dry, ventilated fuel stack is not the same thing as a damp, decaying habitat pile.
| Type of pile | Main goal | Moisture and airflow | Placement and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decorative stack | Create a deliberate visual feature; it may or may not hold usable firewood. | Choose conditions to suit whether the wood is meant to stay dry or weather naturally. | Prioritize a stable arrangement and a location that suits the garden. Apply fire and pest precautions if it contains firewood. |
| Working firewood store | Keep fuel stable, accessible, and able to dry. | Raise it off the soil, stack it loosely, and leave the sides open for airflow. | Keep it away from buildings as local fire guidance requires; monitor pests and bring indoors only what you plan to burn soon. |
| Dead-wood habitat pile | Provide potential shelter and food resources for wildlife. | Allow wood to decay; firewood-seasoning practices such as covering the top are not automatically appropriate. | Choose a quiet garden location and tolerate natural change. Wildlife use is possible, not guaranteed. |
Make a firewood stack look like a garden feature
Give the stack a clear silhouette
For a working stack, an orderly outline makes stored fuel read as an intentional focal point. A simple rectangular stack can suit a path-side or seating-area setting; a smaller stack can mark the end of a border or define a garden corner. These are styling applications rather than proven designs, so let the available space and safe, stable stacking determine the final shape.
Use a raised base and simple end supports
Keep firewood off the soil to reduce ground contact and support drying. Cornell Cooperative Extension identifies pallets as one possible first layer. To help keep a stack together, Cornell advises stacking loosely no more than two layers deep and using alternating end stacks or 2x4s as supports. A purpose-made outdoor firewood rack is another option, but it is not essential if a suitable raised base and stable supports do the job.

Keep the fuel dry without blocking airflow
Cornell recommends covering the top of a firewood stack while leaving the sides exposed, with metal roofing sheets or plastic tarps as possible covers. This shields the stack from above while allowing air to move through it. Do not assume a cover belongs on every wood feature: a habitat pile may be intended to stay damp and decay.
Cornell Cooperative Extension says green wood takes at least six months to reach below 20% moisture, and notes that wood type and shady or damp conditions can extend drying time. That is extension guidance, not a guarantee for every species or location. For a more accurate check before burning, Cornell recommends using a firewood moisture meter.

Use logs to define a quiet garden edge
Naturally shaped logs or a modest stack can give a garden corner, informal border, or seating nook a rustic boundary. Varying the log shapes can make the arrangement feel less formal; a neat, repeated outline can make it feel more architectural. These are aesthetic choices, not evidence that a decorative arrangement will attract wildlife. If habitat is the goal, design and maintain it as a habitat pile instead.
Keep any freestanding stack stable and avoid placing it where it obstructs a path or creates a hazard near seating. If the logs are stored firewood, location and fire precautions matter more than the decorative effect.

Build a separate pile for wildlife habitat
Let dead wood serve a different purpose
A loose pile of brush or decaying logs can offer shelter from weather and predators. UF/IFAS also explains that decaying brush attracts insects that can become food for other animals. This creates an opportunity for habitat, not a promise that particular wildlife will visit.
Choose a spot where natural decay is acceptable
Unlike seasoned firewood, a habitat pile does not need to be kept dry for burning. Place it in a quieter part of the garden where gradual decay and an untidy appearance are acceptable. Avoid applying firewood-drying advice—such as a top cover intended to keep fuel dry—without considering whether it conflicts with the habitat purpose.

Place firewood with fire and pest precautions in mind
Account for local fire conditions
For California, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources fire-smart landscape guidance recommends placing woodpiles at least 30 feet from structures or storing them in a noncombustible enclosure, and clearing vegetation within 10 feet of woodpiles. These are UC ANR recommendations, not universal statutory distances. Check local fire rules and conditions, particularly where wildfire exposure is a concern.
Reduce the chance of bringing insects indoors
Iowa State University Extension notes that firewood can shelter insects. It recommends stacking wood off the ground and away from the home, bringing only a small amount indoors shortly before burning, and not applying insecticides to firewood.

- MEASUREMENTS - Firewood rack: 4ft x 4ft x 13.8 inch, firewood cover: 4ft x 3.5ft x 24 inch; Ideal for storing, drying, or heaping firewood; Fits on porches, in gardens, on decks, under eaves, on patios, in your yard, etc
Match the design to your garden
- For a tidy focal point: use a stable, raised, orderly fuel stack and a location convenient for access that also respects local fire precautions.
- For a rustic border or corner: use logs as a visual boundary, but do not treat decoration alone as a wildlife habitat plan.
- For wildlife: make a loose dead-wood or brush pile where decay is welcome, and understand that animal visits are not guaranteed.
- For both appearance and function: decide which function takes priority. A dry, ventilated firewood store and a decaying habitat pile have different moisture, airflow, and maintenance needs.
