Evergreen planting offers year-round coverage; trellises and freestanding panels can screen a smaller area quickly; and a coordinated service enclosure can conceal several items at once. For outdoor HVAC equipment and utility infrastructure, keep airflow, service access, and required clearances ahead of appearance.
Start with the view, the space, and the access
Before choosing a screen, identify what needs hiding and who needs to reach it. A view from the kitchen window may call for a different solution than one from the street. Measure the available area, note gates and paths, and check whether the feature needs regular servicing, ventilation, or utility access.
- Choose the sightline: Screen the feature from the place it is most visible rather than automatically surrounding it on every side.
- Measure the footprint: Include room for doors, lids, service panels, and the full mature size of any plants.
- Plan for upkeep: Living screens need care and time to establish; built screens need appropriate materials and occasional maintenance.
- Check constraints: Before covering utility equipment or building an enclosure, confirm access requirements, easements, and applicable local rules.
The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension describes screened service areas as places that can accommodate garbage cans, utility access, tool or wood storage, and compost piles. That makes a well-positioned screen useful beyond appearance: it can organize everyday yard functions. University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension, Landscape Design (ID-1).
Choose a screening approach that fits the yard
| Approach | Coverage and space | Establishment and upkeep | Access and practical limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evergreen trees or shrubs | Can provide year-round screening; needs space for plants to reach mature size. | Takes time to establish and requires care suited to the plant and site. | Keep clear of equipment, paths, and service access; choose plants for local conditions. |
| Deciduous planting | Can screen in summer while allowing more winter sunlight through; size depends on the chosen plant. | Seasonal coverage changes, and upkeep depends on the plant. | Useful when winter sun is desirable; account for mature size and placement. |
| Trellis or lattice | Compact visual screen that can be softened with climbing plants. | Provides structure immediately; climbing plants take time and require care. | Open construction can preserve airflow; leave clearance and make it accessible where servicing is needed. |
| Freestanding screen or three-sided enclosure | Creates a defined screen for bins or equipment; requires room for a gate or movable panel. | Provides immediate structure; durability depends on materials and exposure. | Plan a convenient opening. Do not seal HVAC equipment inside. |
| Coordinated wall or enclosure | Can provide stronger concealment and organize a service area; takes more planning and space. | Durability and upkeep depend on design and construction. | Check local standards and preserve required utility and equipment access. |
These are design approaches, not one-size-fits-all prescriptions. A plant suitable for one climate or lot may be too large, poorly adapted, or difficult to maintain on another. The University of Kentucky guide distinguishes evergreen screening from deciduous planting that can allow more winter sun. See its landscape design guidance.

Hide an AC unit without restricting it
Outdoor HVAC equipment needs room to move air and be serviced. Trane advises keeping plants at least 2–3 feet from the unit on all sides, but that general recommendation does not replace the clearance and service instructions for a specific model. Check the unit manual and keep service panels reachable. Avoid planting aggressive-rooted plants near the equipment. Trane: Landscaping Around Outdoor HVAC Units.
An open trellis or freestanding screen can soften the view without turning the unit into a sealed box. The Home Depot recommends choosing a design with open airways and describes a movable three-sided screen that allows access. Position any screen far enough away to preserve the unit’s required operating and service clearances. The Home Depot: How to Hide an A/C Unit Outside.

Screen trash bins, tools, and compost
For bins or loose yard equipment, group the items in a practical service area and screen that zone rather than hiding each object separately. A three-sided enclosure with a gate or movable panel gives you a defined visual boundary while keeping bins accessible. Include enough room to open lids, move containers, and reach anything stored behind them.
A trellis or lattice can make a smaller service area feel lighter than a solid wall. If stronger concealment is important, a wall or coordinated enclosure may suit the setting better; either way, integrate the screen with the house and surrounding planting instead of treating it as an isolated afterthought. University of Kentucky guidance identifies garbage cans, tool storage, wood storage, compost piles, and utility access as possible uses for screened service areas. Hide utility boxes and unwanted views carefully
For a utility box, first establish whether it must remain visible or reachable and whether the utility provider has clearance or access requirements. A planting bed, trellis, or screen placed to one side may soften the view without enclosing the equipment. Do not assume a utility box can safely or legally be covered; check with the relevant utility or local authority before construction.
For an unwanted view beyond the yard, use planting or a screen to interrupt the sightline from the places you actually use. A layered arrangement can feel more natural than a single abrupt barrier, but account for the plants’ mature size and the view’s seasonal change. Evergreen trees retain coverage through winter; deciduous trees can screen summer views while admitting more winter light, according to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension. Make the screen belong to the property
Screening can use landscaping, solid walls, or trellis work. City of Eastvale design guidance gives these as ways to screen refuse containers and equipment while fitting the broader design. That is local guidance, not a universal requirement for private yards; check the rules that apply at your address before building. City of Eastvale design guidelines.
Los Angeles Department of City Planning guidance also discusses screening rooftop equipment and hiding trash enclosures in urban design. Its examples are specific to that planning context, not a general code for homeowners elsewhere. Los Angeles Citywide Design Guidelines.
