CouchBunker was reported as a custom sofa with a gun safe concealed beneath removable seat cushions. Optional panels fitted to the cushions were described as portable shields, but the reported claim that they could stop a .44 Magnum round came from the manufacturer—not an independent test. The available coverage dates to 2013 and 2016; it does not establish whether CouchBunker is sold today.
How the CouchBunker worked
In 2013 coverage, CouchBunker was described as a sofa built around a concealed gun safe. Removing the seat cushions exposed the storage compartment. Optional panels could be attached to the underside of the cushions and carried by their handles, making them separate from the safe itself. New Atlas reported these features on August 20, 2013 (New Atlas); American Rifleman also covered the sofa that year (American Rifleman).
Reported dimensions, capacity and weight
New Atlas and American Rifleman reported the safe’s dimensions as 78 × 29.5 × 14 inches (198 × 75 × 36 cm). New Atlas said the company claimed it could hold up to 30 rifles, while American Rifleman offered a more conservative practical estimate of about 20 long guns. Neither figure is an independently verified capacity test; the number a compartment holds depends on firearm dimensions and how they are arranged.
New Atlas reported the safe weighed 650 pounds (295 kg) and the complete sofa about 900 pounds (408 kg). Those are historical product specifications, not measurements independently confirmed by the reporting. The total weight makes delivery, floor loading and placement important considerations: this is not an ordinary sofa to assume can be carried into place without planning.

What was claimed about the cushion panels
New Atlas described optional panels measuring 20 × 24 inches (50.8 × 61 cm), fitted beneath the seat cushions and equipped with handles. It reported Heracles Research Corporation’s claim that a panel could stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range. Woodworking Network repeated the manufacturer’s claim in 2016 (Woodworking Network).
The available reports do not provide an independent ballistic test, a named protection standard, or evidence about performance against rifle rounds or other ammunition. The .44 Magnum statement should therefore be understood as a reported company claim, not a certified rating or a general guarantee of protection. The coverage does not answer how many rounds a panel could withstand.
