Your iPhone or iPad can be an excellent recipe screen, timer, shopping list, and cooking-video player—but a kitchen is a difficult place for a device that depends on touch. The simplest reliable setup is to mount it safely, control it hands-free, and use Guided Access to prevent accidental taps.
These three habits take only a few minutes to set up and work with the device you already own.

1. Put your iPhone or iPad somewhere stable and outside the splash zone
Start with placement, not settings. A device lying flat on the counter is harder to read, easier to splash, and more likely to be touched with wet or food-covered hands. A stable stand or holder keeps the screen at a useful viewing angle and helps you see the recipe without leaning over a cutting board or hot pan.
Place the device well away from:
- The edge of the sink.
- The counter immediately beside a boiling pot or hot pan.
- Continuous steam from a kettle, pot, or cooking appliance.
- A cutting board or other food-preparation surface.
- Any location where it could fall into food, liquid, a sink, or onto a burner.
Also route the charging cable carefully. It should not cross a burner, hang near a knife, catch on a pan handle, or create a trip hazard. If you need power, place the adapter and cable where they will stay dry and away from heat.

Choose the right type of support
- Tabletop stand: Flexible and usually inexpensive, but it must have a broad, stable base so it cannot slide or be knocked over.
- Folio case with a built-in stand: Convenient for travel and quick setup, although its viewing angles may be limited.
- Adjustable arm or bar mount: Useful for keeping an iPad off the counter, but it needs a secure attachment point and should not be placed where children or pets can pull on it.
- Sealed sleeve or plastic bag: May reduce exposure to splashes, but can create glare, reduce touch sensitivity, trap heat, and interfere with microphones or speakers. It is not guaranteed protection.
A protective case and a stand solve different problems. A case can help with bumps and handling; a stand improves stability and visibility. Neither makes an iPhone or iPad heat-proof, grease-proof, or safe beside a sink or open flame. Do not rely on a case’s water-resistance claim as permission to expose the device to kitchen hazards.
iPhone or iPad?
An iPhone is usually enough for timers, Siri commands, grocery-list additions, short recipe checks, and cooking videos. It is also easier to position when counter space is limited.
An iPad is more comfortable when a full recipe must remain visible for a long time, when larger text matters, or when you want to see ingredient quantities and instructions together. Use landscape orientation if the app supports it, and raise the text size before you begin. Do not assume every recipe app supports landscape mode, split screen, or offline use.
2. Let Siri handle timers, reminders, and shopping-list additions
Voice control is most useful when your hands are wet, oily, covered in flour, or holding a utensil. Depending on your language, region, account settings, network access, app support, and software version, you can ask Siri to perform tasks such as:

Hey Siri, set a timer for 12 minutes.
Hey Siri, add cilantro to my groceries list.
Hey Siri, remind me to check the oven in 20 minutes.
Hey Siri, open Safari.
Apple documents timer and grocery-list examples in its guide to using Siri with apps on iPhone. Multiple named timers may also be available, but the exact behavior depends on the device and software.
Always confirm the result
Extractor fans, running water, dishwashers, loud appliances, background speech, accents, and poor microphone placement can all cause Siri to misunderstand you. After giving a command, confirm that the timer or reminder was actually created. Use an audible alert or check the screen visually before relying on it.
Siri is a convenience feature, not a replacement for an oven alarm, stovetop safety practice, or food thermometer. A timer tells you how long something has cooked; it does not confirm that food has reached a safe internal temperature or that it is done.
3. Use Guided Access to keep the device on the recipe
Guided Access turns an iPhone or iPad into a limited-purpose screen by restricting it to one app. In the kitchen, that can prevent an accidental swipe from leaving a recipe, a tap from opening Messages or Photos, or a child or helper from switching to another app.

Guided Access can also provide its own display Auto-Lock setting, disable all touch input, block selected areas of the screen, disable hardware buttons, turn off the onscreen keyboard, and restrict motion or rotation. It does not protect the hardware from water, grease, heat, or drops.
Set up Guided Access before cooking
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Guided Access.
- Turn on Guided Access.
- Open Passcode Settings and create a Guided Access passcode.
- Optionally enable Face ID or Touch ID for ending or pausing a session.
- Adjust Display Auto-Lock so the screen remains visible for the expected cooking period. A longer interval uses more battery.
- Open the recipe, browser, video, or cooking app.
- Triple-click the iPhone side button, the iPad top button, or the Home button on an older Home-button device.
- Tap Session Settings or Options; wording can vary by operating-system version.
- Choose whether to disable touch, volume buttons, the side/top/Home button, the software keyboard, motion, or rotation.
- Tap Start.
If you want the recipe to ignore every accidental tap, turn on the setting that disables Touch. You can instead circle particular parts of the screen to block only those areas.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →End Guided Access safely
Triple-click the relevant button, authenticate with the Guided Access passcode or Face ID/Touch ID, and tap End. Button behavior can differ on older operating systems and devices; Apple’s current instructions use the triple-click workflow, while some older versions may show a different gesture.
If you cannot exit, repeat the button gesture and authenticate. If the device does not respond, use Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions rather than experimenting with button combinations.

- PRACTICAL DESIGN: Featured with a creative hollow design, this tablet holder allows more airflow to help cool down devices. The longer arms also allow the tablet stand to hold your device even with a thick case.
- ADJUSTABLE VIEWING ANGLE: The maximum rotating angle of this adjustable tablet stand is 180 degrees. It offers optimal viewing angles for different activities, such as writing on tablets, watching films, playing games, reading recipes, etc
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY: The tablet stand fits a wide range of devices (up to 12.9 inches), including iPad Pro 12.9/11, iPad Air 4/3/2/1, iPad mini, iPhone 12/12 Pro, Samsung Tabs and more.
- STURDY & STABLE: The tablet stand is made of premium, reinforced aluminum alloy. It securely supports tablets and prevents wobbling or falling. Moreover, the weighted base ensures stability on every surface.
- PROTECTIVE PADS: The soft silicone pads at the back and hooks safeguard your devices from scratches. The rubber pads at the bottom prevent the stand from sliding.
Apple also warns that Crash Detection and Emergency Services are unavailable while Guided Access is active. Consider that limitation before disabling buttons or touch, particularly if you are working alone.
Keep the screen readable and recoverable
- Increase text size: Do this before your hands are dirty so ingredient quantities are easier to read.
- Control glare: Brighten the display enough to see it, but move the device if overhead lights or windows create reflections.
- Save the recipe first: Download or save it when possible if your kitchen has weak Wi-Fi. Offline support is app-specific.
- Use a backup: For a recipe that would be difficult to restart, keep a written copy or another way to recover the instructions.
- Keep Auto-Lock practical: A longer display timeout is convenient, but it consumes more battery. Do not leave the screen awake indefinitely without a reason.
Choose the recipe source that fits the job
Safari or another browser
A browser is convenient for one recipe, a quick search, or a recipe from a trusted publication. It avoids installing another app or paying for a subscription. The trade-offs are advertisements, cookie prompts, autoplay video, long pages, and the possibility that a page may later change or disappear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA dedicated recipe app
A recipe app is better when you want saved collections, grocery lists, ratings, notes, or meal planning. For example, the current US App Store listing for NYT Cooking describes recipe collections, videos, a Recipe Box, and grocery-list planning for iPhone and iPad. The listing showed an iOS 18.0 or later and iPadOS 18.0 or later requirement at research time, along with several displayed subscription options. App requirements, prices, bundles, and promotions can vary by region, account, platform, and date.
A cooking-appliance companion app
If you own compatible equipment, an appliance companion app may provide guided recipes and appliance-specific instructions. The Breville+ Cooking listing, for example, describes guided recipes and classes designed around selected Breville products, including countertop ovens, food processors, and Joule sous-vide products. It is not the right default choice for someone who only needs a general recipe screen.

Kitchen hygiene and safety checklist
- Wash and dry your hands before touching the device.
- Use Siri when your hands are wet, oily, or covered in food.
- Keep the device off food-preparation surfaces.
- Do not operate a device with wet hands while it is connected to a charger.
- Keep cables away from burners, hot cookware, knives, and walkways.
- Clean the device and case only according to the manufacturer’s instructions for that model.
- Do not spray cleaner directly onto the iPhone or iPad.
- Keep the device where it cannot fall into a pot, onto a burner, or into a sink.
Quick setup checklist
- Charge the device.
- Open and save the recipe.
- Increase text size or brightness if needed.
- Mount the device securely outside the splash, steam, heat, and cable-snag zones.
- Test Siri and confirm that a sample timer works.
- Enable Guided Access and choose the touch and Auto-Lock settings you need.
- Keep a backup timer available for critical cooking.
Do you need to buy a new iPad?
Usually not. An existing iPhone is sufficient for timers, shopping-list additions, and quick recipe checks. An existing iPad is a better upgrade in usability when you need larger text, long-form instructions, or cooking videos.
If you are considering a purchase, solve the mounting problem first. A compatible stand or folio may improve your setup more than replacing a perfectly serviceable device. Apple’s US buying page showed starting prices of $449 for iPad, $599 for iPad mini, $749 for iPad Air, and $1,199 for iPad Pro on August 18, 2026; prices and availability should be checked again before purchase at Apple’s current iPad store.
Choose a new device only if the larger screen, visibility, battery, or app compatibility justifies it. Confirm that the intended recipe app supports the operating system on the device you plan to use, and confirm case or stand compatibility for that exact model and generation.
The practical bottom line
The safest and least frustrating kitchen setup is not an expensive tablet. It is a stable viewing position away from hazards, Siri for tasks that do not require touching, and Guided Access to stop accidental input. Those changes make an existing iPhone or iPad more useful—but they never make it spill-proof, heat-proof, or a substitute for normal kitchen and food-safety precautions.
