Emergency construction near Moran Junction is expected to begin during the fall 2026 low-flow period, with most work planned from October through December. Why construction is needed near Moran Junction
Grand Teton National Park and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plan emergency work beside US Highway 26/89/191 near Moran Junction, where the Snake River and Buffalo Fork meet. According to the park and FHWA, erosion along the Snake River is accelerating and the channel has moved increasingly close to the highway. The fall work is intended to slow riverbank erosion and protect the road ahead of spring 2027 runoff.
The highway is a year-round transportation link for Jackson, Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks, and Wyoming communities. In its October 5, 2026 announcement, the National Park Service said the route carries approximately 900,000 vehicles annually. The release does not define a separate measurement period for that approximate figure.
When the work is expected to happen

The announcement does not give an exact start day or firm end date; timing depends on river flows, weather and site access.

What drivers should expect
Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work area. Temporary traffic lights and flaggers will control vehicles moving through the lane. The park and FHWA estimate delays of up to 20 minutes; that is an estimate in the announcement, not a guaranteed maximum for every trip.
For trip planning, allow extra time and build flexibility into travel near Moran Junction during the construction period. Check the Grand Teton National Park announcement for updates. It does not identify a detour or provide a specific delay estimate by time of day.

How the emergency work fits the longer-term plan
The fall construction is an immediate measure to address erosion and protect the highway before spring runoff. Separately, the park and FHWA are identifying a long-term solution intended to address erosion, protect the road and improve ecological health in the Snake River corridor. The October 5 announcement does not specify the longer-term project’s design, funding or implementation schedule.
Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins said, “Protecting this highway is about more than protecting a road.” The announcement says the park will share additional information about construction activities, traffic impacts and the long-term project on its website.
