Construction to re-establish Karlskrona garrison at Rosenholm began on 2 October 2026, according to Sweden’s Fortifications Agency, Fortifikationsverket. The project is planned across about 700,000 square metres and is intended to support Swedish Armed Forces and Naval Base operations. The agency targets the first staged handovers to the Armed Forces for the end of 2029.
What is being built at Rosenholm?
The planned facilities include a vehicle servicing hall and a ground equipment workshop, alongside supporting infrastructure. Fortifikationsverket has not specified a complete building list or detailed construction schedule in its 2 October announcement. It describes the work as part of re-establishing the garrison at Rosenholm, rather than a single building project.
Preparatory work began in spring 2026, according to the agency’s Karlskrona – Rosenholm project page. The agency says some existing buildings will initially be demolished and about 15 hectares of forest cleared. It also warns that heavy construction traffic may occur, mainly on weekdays. The site is to be fenced and designated a protected object; the agency has not published specific public access or security procedures.
How large is the project area?
The figures refer to two different areas. Fortifikationsverket reported that it took over about 230,000 square metres at Rosenholm in early September 2026. The wider development is planned to cover about 700,000 square metres, equivalent to 70 hectares, over several years. The acquired parcel should not be mistaken for the full planned development area.

Why is the garrison being re-established at Rosenholm?
Fortifikationsverket says the facilities are intended to meet the Swedish Armed Forces’ growing needs and support Naval Base activity. Rosenholm is next to a training area, and the agency says moving heavy transport and logistics there will reduce that activity in central Karlskrona. Its March 2026 notice described the development as providing modern buildings adapted to the Naval Base’s needs (Fortifikationsverket, 18 March 2026).
When will facilities be handed over?
Fortifikationsverket’s stated target is to begin handing facilities over to the Swedish Armed Forces in stages at the end of 2029. This is a planned first handover, not a claim that the full development will be complete by then. The agency describes construction and transfers as extending over several years; the 2 October announcement does not give a final completion date.

A site with a long garrison history
Fortifikationsverket says Karlskrona garrison has operated in different forms since the 17th century and describes it as one of Sweden’s largest garrisons. The Rosenholm project is a new stage in that history, focused on facilities for current military and Naval Base requirements.
