Before accepting a construction job, compare the full written compensation package—not just salary. Check health costs, retirement contributions, usable time off, insurance protection, and whether travel, lodging, tools, and other field costs are covered. For each benefit, confirm who qualifies, when it starts, what you pay, and which plan document or policy defines it.

What benefits should I compare before accepting a construction job offer?

Start with the terms that affect your household budget and the realities of the job: medical coverage, retirement contributions, time away, income protection, and support for travel or field work. Benefits vary by employer, role, location, employee classification, eligibility, and plan year; a benefit listed on a careers page is not proof that every employee receives it.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Fundamentals of Career Transition: Participant Guide recommends making a checklist of acceptable and unacceptable offer terms and considering how well the job matches your preferences and values. Treat its advice as a framework for evaluating your offer, not as a substitute for current plan documents or legal guidance.

Health, dental, and vision coverage

Ask for the Summary of Benefits and Coverage and the employee contribution schedule for the specific plan year. Compare the details that determine what care may cost you:

  • Provider networks, referral rules, and the coverage effective date.
  • Whether the employer funds an HSA or HRA, offers an FSA, or provides a wellness account—and whether any contribution is guaranteed or conditional.

Employer descriptions can identify coverage categories without giving enough information to compare plan value. Turner Construction lists medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage; Cooper Construction lists medical/prescription, telehealth, dental, and vision. Those are examples of employer-listed benefits, not evidence that the plans are equivalent or that either is more generous.

Retirement plan and employer contributions

Request the match formula and ask whether it is calculated each paycheck or reconciled annually. Confirm eligibility and enrollment dates, the vesting schedule, and whether the company makes any contribution that does not depend on your own deferrals. Then estimate the employer dollars you could actually receive based on your expected contributions and time in the job.

Cooper Construction publicly describes a 6% dollar-for-dollar match. Turner lists a company 401(k)/RRSP matching program, and Pinner Construction says its plan has matching without giving a formula on the cited careers page. These company-specific descriptions do not establish identical terms, eligibility, or immediate vesting. Ask for the plan materials before treating a stated percentage as money you will receive.

For a construction role, also ask about expected start and finish times, overtime, weekends, weather shutdowns, project closeout periods, and whether staffing levels make it difficult to schedule leave. Turner lists progressive vacation and wellness/personal days; Pinner lists vacation, holidays, and sick leave. Neither public description establishes how leave is scheduled on a particular crew or jobsite.

Disability, life, and other protection

For short- and long-term disability and life or AD&D insurance, find out whether coverage is employer-paid or voluntary, the benefit amount, elimination period, duration, exclusions, portability, and whether benefits are taxable. If relevant to your household, compare accident coverage, employee assistance and mental-health access, parental leave, and dependent coverage.

Travel and costs tied to field work

For a traveling or site-based position, get specific about how the employer handles work-related expenses and time. Ask:

Confirm eligibility, classification, and start dates

Read the offer and plan documents for the actual employing entity and your work location. A listed benefit may depend on role, tenure, geography, or hours worked. Confirm the waiting period, eligibility threshold, and effective date for each benefit instead of assuming everything begins on your first day.

Also confirm whether you will be an employee or an independent contractor and which benefits apply to that arrangement. The Department of Labor’s guide notes that independent contractors generally do not receive employer benefits directly. Do not infer legal classification from a job title alone; ask how the relationship is classified and review the written terms.

How to compare two construction job offers fairly

Use one row for each benefit category and record the actual terms. Keep unknowns visible rather than treating them as zero or assuming a promotional phrase such as “comprehensive” or “generous” has a measurable value.

Record for each offer What to write down
Written term The offer language, plan provision, or policy that defines the benefit.
Employee cost Premiums, contributions, or other recurring costs you pay.
Employer contribution Employer-paid premiums or contributions, including conditions for receiving them.
Eligibility and timing Who qualifies, any waiting period, and the effective date.
Limits or conditions Vesting, caps, exclusions, repayment clauses, or scheduling restrictions.
Personal value How important and usable the benefit is for your health, family, finances, and work pattern.
Unknown—ask Every missing number or unclear term, plus the person or document that can confirm it.

Convert recurring costs and employer contributions to annual estimates only when you have the figures needed to do so. When weighing the offers, useful comparison axes include out-of-pocket health exposure, guaranteed employer retirement dollars, usable leave and schedule fit, income protection, and the net cost or support for travel and field duties. Their relative importance depends on your dependents, health needs, site distance, travel expectations, household finances, and career plans.

What a broad benefits statistic can—and cannot—tell you

The Department of Labor’s 2020 proposed rule cited a 2019 Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate that employer benefits directly benefiting employees accounted for 21 percent of total compensation among civilian workers. That is historical, broad-economy context—not a construction-industry average, a current benchmark, or a measure of the value of a particular offer. The percentage should not be used to estimate what your employer contributes without the actual figures for your job.

No comparable construction-wide benefits benchmark broken out by trade, occupation, geography, union status, and employee classification is established here. Public employer lists also do not show how policies are implemented on an individual jobsite or provide enough plan detail to rank the examples.
