Heavy construction trucks serving a solar-farm site and the wider regional data-center buildout are using rural Wichita County roads that officials say cannot handle the loads. County officials and the sheriff’s office have responded with route directions, signs, commercial-vehicle inspections and occasional truck shutdowns. The available reporting does not quantify the road damage or establish how much repairs will cost.
Why are trucks tearing up rural Wichita County roads?
Construction traffic is bringing heavy loads onto roads that were not designed for that kind of use. In a report published October 22, 2026, the Times Record News said trucks carrying materials to a solar-farm site were crossing Commissioner Jeff Watts’s precinct rather than approaching through Harrold on a stronger road. Watts said the smaller roads were not durable enough for heavy-duty traffic.

Sheriff William Rutledge described the immediate problem as individual truck drivers choosing the wrong route, rather than construction companies directing them onto unsuitable roads. Residents had complained about road damage and job-site traffic, prompting more enforcement by the sheriff’s office. The report does not provide a truck count, the vehicles’ weights, pavement-condition measurements or a measured rate of road failure, so the scale of the damage cannot be expressed numerically.
Which Wichita County roads are appropriate for heavy construction traffic?
Officials described Highway 25 as designed for heavy loads and identified Countyline Road, Old Lake Road and side roads as unsuitable for that traffic. For trucks serving the reported solar-farm site, the approach through Harrold was identified as the stronger route.

| Road or route | What officials said | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Highway 25 | Designed for heavy loads | Identified by the sheriff as suitable for the heavy-traffic route |
| Approach through Harrold | Described as a stronger approach to the solar-farm site | Watts said some trucks instead crossed his precinct on smaller roads |
| Countyline Road, Old Lake Road and side roads | Described as unsuitable for heavy-duty traffic | Officials said trucks were using roads that could not handle those loads |
These descriptions are the officials’ account in the October 22 report, not published engineering ratings for each road. The report does not identify a formal route-permit system or provide road-by-road load limits. Drivers should follow posted directions and applicable instructions from county officials rather than treating a convenient shortcut as an approved construction route.
Is the Google data center causing the road damage?
The reporting connects the local truck problem chiefly to materials deliveries for a solar-farm site, while identifying the regional data-center buildout as part of the broader increase in construction activity. It does not establish that Google’s Wilbarger County project specifically caused the damage on Countyline Road, Old Lake Road or another named Wichita County road.

Google said on February 24, 2026 that its Wilbarger County data center was under construction and would be co-located with new clean power developed by AES. Google also said the facility would use advanced air-cooling, limiting water use to critical campus operations such as kitchens. That announcement provides regional context; it does not document the truck routes or road conditions at issue in Wichita County.

Two dated project snapshots offer additional context, but they are not road-condition surveys. FieldProspects’ October 8, 2026 snapshot lists 502 MW of data centers from planned to operating in Wichita County, 86.1 MW of operating generation and 3.2 GW of planned generation across 14 projects; its table lists four planned solar projects totaling 1,358.5 MW. A Parcel & Grid page based on an ERCOT September 2026 queue snapshot lists 12 proposed Wichita County energy projects totaling about 2,448 MW—three solar and nine battery-storage projects—and identifies Short Creek Solar at 628 MW with a target online date of December 2027. These are dated aggregations of project activity, not measurements of construction traffic or proof of pavement damage.
What is the county doing about heavy trucks on Countyline Road?
The sheriff’s office reported increased traffic enforcement and use of commercial-vehicle inspection units. Watts said a precinct foreman had shut down some trucks, and the sheriff’s office was involved. The report does not say whether any driver received a citation or fine, or give the date, number or outcome of the shutdowns.
Some companies posted signs directing drivers toward the correct roads, according to the report. That is a documented routing measure, but the available account does not establish how widely the signs were placed or whether every driver followed them.

Did the solar company fix Burnett Ranch Road?
Total Energy, the solar-farm builder named in the report, asked permission to use its equipment to upgrade part of Burnett Ranch Road. Watts described the result by saying, “They made the road really nice.” The report identifies this as a specific improvement, but does not give the work’s final scope, cost, engineering specifications or a formal acceptance of the completed road.
That account supports saying that Total Energy upgraded part of the road; it does not establish that the company repaired every affected road or paid the county’s overall repair bill. No total road-repair cost is reported.
