Construction has begun on a new Hobbton High School campus in Sampson County, North Carolina. A report published October 5, 2026, says T.A. Loving broke ground at a September 30 ceremony. The planned 119,000-square-foot school is designed for about 600 students, with opening expected in August 2028.
What is planned for the new Hobbton High School?
The October 5 announcement, carried in a WKML-FM listing that attributes its information to WCTI12, reports a 119,000-square-foot campus with capacity for about 600 students. Those are project plans, and the August 2028 opening is an expected date rather than a completed milestone. How the reported project budget is structured
At a July 2026 presentation to county commissioners, Superintendent Dr. Jamie King described the main building and its alternates as separate parts of the estimate. The Sampson Independent reported that the building was estimated at about $55 million, with roughly $7.8 million in alternates, bringing those construction elements to approximately $63 million. Added costs—including technology, furniture, permanent fees, fire storage tanks and specialty inspections—put the overall project estimate at about $73.3 million at that time. These were estimates reported after Sampson County commissioners unanimously approved the project’s guaranteed maximum price on July 13, 2026. Which campus facilities are included—and which were funded separately?
The approximately $7.8 million of reported alternates includes athletics-related work: a football stadium, track, concession stand, restrooms, baseball and softball fields, and bleachers. The greenhouse and animal science facility was not included in the reported guaranteed maximum price. County commissioners separately approved a requested $2 million capital reserve appropriation for that facility. Sampson Independent report

King framed the agricultural facility as an opportunity for practical, full-scale agricultural education, saying, “We’re an agricultural community in an agricultural county.” He said instruction should teach students how to grow “on a farm, on a full production facility,” rather than only how to grow a few rows of corn. What will happen to the existing Hobbton High School?
As of the Sampson Independent’s July 16, 2026 report, the district had not settled on a future for the current school. Possibilities discussed included keeping some spaces—such as the auditorium, athletic facilities or career and technical education wing—for community use, tournaments, housing or economic development. King said those ideas had not been fully developed, so neither reuse nor demolition should be treated as a decided plan. Sampson Independent report

King estimated that maintaining an unused school could cost $200,000 to $300,000 per year. He also cautioned that the district should make sure it was the right building before tearing one down.
