The facility is planned as a base for North Walney National Nature Reserve management and the Earnse Project’s nature, learning and community programmes.
What is being built at Earnse Bay?
The project is a Beach School and Work Base intended to serve two connected purposes: a headquarters for managing North Walney National Nature Reserve and a welcoming gateway to the coastal landscape. Natural England announced the start of construction on 6 October 2026, saying Integra Buildings had arrived the preceding week to begin groundworks. Natural England’s announcement does not give a completion or opening date.
Natural England describes the reserve as a landscape of sand dunes, dune heath and saltmarsh, supporting breeding waders, rare plants and the nationally important natterjack toad. That is the announcement’s summary of the site, not a detailed ecological survey.
How will the building be used?
The building will become home to the Earnse Project, a partnership between Natural England, Westmorland and Furness Council, Art Gene and Cumbria Wildlife Trust, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Planned activity includes:

The announcement says these activities will involve staff, volunteers, schools and local communities, with programmes taking place across Barrow-in-Furness.
Who is funding and delivering the work?
The stated cost of the building is £1.95 million, funded by Defra, according to Natural England’s 2026 announcement. Natural England describes the building as the final phase of the wider Earnse Bay development, delivered with Westmorland and Furness Council using Brilliant Barrow Town Deal funds. The announcement does not state the total value of that wider development; its Town Deal funding should not be added to or confused with the building’s £1.95 million cost.

The development site will remain closed to the public throughout construction, and part of the public car park will be cordoned off. Signage is intended to help visitors move around safely. These restrictions apply to the work site and part of the car park; the announcement does not say that all of Earnse Bay or all public access is closed.
