Construction is under way on the Northern Suburbs Youth Hub at Leanyer Recreation Park in Darwin. The facility is designed for young people aged 10 to 17, with completion and opening expected around mid-2027; those dates remain forecasts, not confirmed deadlines.
Where is the Northern Suburbs Youth Hub being built?
The hub is being built within Leanyer Recreation Park, serving Darwin’s northern suburbs. The location was selected after community consultation in 2025. It replaced the former Casuarina Fire Station as the proposed site following community feedback. Government material cites public transport access and nearby recreation amenities, while describing the hub as a distinct, private space alongside the active recreation precinct.

The SHAK Youth Drop-In Centre at Sanderson Middle School was previously described by government as an interim youth hub. That earlier description does not establish whether it is operating now.
What is planned for the building and site?
The Northern Territory Department of Logistics and Infrastructure’s project page describes a purpose-built, supervised facility. The planned spaces include:

The department specifies capacity for up to 60 young people during standard operations and up to 100 during occasional events using indoor and outdoor areas. These are planned project specifications; the final as-built facility and operating arrangements may differ.
Who is the hub intended to serve?
The intended age range is 10 to 17. The Northern Territory Government says the hub is meant to offer a safe, inclusive place for activities, peer connection, practical life-skills development and access to support services. The Department of People, Sport and Culture positions it as part of prevention and early intervention. These are the project’s stated aims, not measured outcomes: the facility has not yet opened, and the cited project and budget material does not report an impact evaluation.

What does the $5 million figure mean?
The $5 million description is a rounded headline figure, not the precise amount named in the Northern Territory’s budget announcement. In May 2025, the NT Government said it allocated $4.619 million in the 2025–26 Budget; its regional budget overview rounded the amount to $4.6 million. The project page identifies the Australian Government’s Priority Community Infrastructure Program as the funding source, and an 11 October 2026 trade report describes a $5 million Federal Government commitment under that program.

When did construction start, and when could the hub open?
The NT procurement listing for tender T26-1046 records a release date of 23 March 2026, a closing date of 5 May 2026 and an award date of 16 July 2026. Its scope covers design and construction of the Leanyer Recreation Park hub, including building work, civil and foundation work, finishes and landscaping.
By 11 October 2026, initial construction work had commenced. The department’s project page had forecast work starting in September 2026 and finishing by mid-2027; the trade report said the hub was expected to open in mid-2027. Neither the construction forecast nor the expected opening date is a confirmed completion date.

Australasian Leisure Management identifies Aspire Design and Construct as the design and construction contractor. The procurement listing’s available details do not name the successful contractor, so that identification is attributable to the trade report rather than the listing.

Community consultation in 2025 led to a change from the former Casuarina Fire Station proposal to Leanyer Recreation Park. Government descriptions point to access by public transport and the recreation precinct’s existing amenities; its youth-program material says the precinct serves young people and families across Darwin’s northern suburbs. The stated approach is to complement the active recreation area while maintaining privacy and separation for the youth facility.

What officials have said about the project
Northern Territory Youth, Seniors and Equality Minister Jinson Charls called the construction start “an important milestone for young people and families in the region,” according to the 11 October 2026 report. In the government’s May 2025 announcement, Charls said: “Territorians have waited too long for a permanent home for the Youth Hub in the Northern Suburbs and I’m pleased to confirm the new location in our government’s year of action, certainty and security.”
The same trade report quoted Northern Territory Youth Round Table member Sky Kiah Mullen highlighting the importance of “providing young people with access to safe spaces.”
