Construction of Atmos Renewables’ 470-megawatt Parron Maam Marang wind farm began on 23 October 2026 with a sod-turn ceremony near Badgingarra in Western Australia’s Shire of Dandaragan. The project is expected to begin operating in late 2028 and is designed to supply renewable electricity equivalent to the needs of about 350,000 homes. It will be built on agricultural land while farming continues, with up to 78 turbines, two substations and a peak construction workforce of about 400 people.
When did construction of Parron Maam Marang start?
Atmos began construction on 23 October 2026. The milestone was marked by a sod-turn ceremony near Badgingarra, about 200 kilometres north of Perth in the north-eastern Wheatbelt. The Western Australian Government announced the start on 24 October.

What is being built, and where is it located?
Parron Maam Marang will be an onshore wind farm spread across approximately 8,400 hectares of agricultural land. The development is intended to operate alongside existing farming rather than replace the area’s agricultural use.

The project name means “strong wind” and recognises its connection to Country and partnership with the Yued People. Atmos has entered a Relationship Agreement with Yued Aboriginal Corporation covering local employment and contracting, cultural and community initiatives, and Yued ranger participation in caring for Country.
How many turbines and substations will the wind farm have?
The current government announcement describes a 470 MW project with up to 78 wind-turbine generators. The Australian Industry Participation summary specifies Vestas V162 6.2 MW machines, together with two substations.

Why do some project materials say 489 MW?
Atmos’s live project page currently contains a 489 MW figure in its key-information panel, while the same page’s project description, the WA Government release and the construction announcement describe a 470 MW project. For the construction milestone and current news reporting, 470 MW is the supported figure. The 489 MW entry should not be treated as a revised capacity unless Atmos or the government publishes a formal clarification.
Who owns Parron Maam Marang and who will buy its electricity?
Parron Developments and Atmos Renewables developed the project. The WA Government says Atmos now fully owns it, and Atmos says it will retain ownership through construction and operate the wind farm after completion.
The project reached financial close on 2 October 2026. Its electricity is covered by a long-term power-purchase agreement with Synergy, Western Australia’s largest electricity retailer. Parron Maam Marang is also backed by the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme and is classified by the WA Government as a Priority Project.

When is the wind farm expected to be operational?
Atmos currently expects operations to begin by the end of 2028, while the WA Government describes the target as late 2028.

The draft Australian Industry Participation Plan had indicated a September 2026 start and 28 months of construction. Because the actual start was announced on 23 October, those earlier dates should not be read as the project’s current schedule.
How many jobs and local contracts will the project create?
Atmos expects a peak construction workforce of about 400 employees. Once the facility is operating, it forecasts 15 to 20 ongoing operations and maintenance positions.

The separate draft AIP summary estimates at least $500 million in capital expenditure. That is a project-capital estimate, not the same measure as Atmos’s planned supplier spend.
How can local businesses register interest in work?
Atmos says the main contractors will subcontract local and First Nations businesses. It invites businesses and jobseekers to register interest through the project’s own engagement channel, but no complete final contractor roster or confirmed open-tender list has been published.

Businesses should prepare capability details, relevant licences, safety systems, geographic coverage and evidence of previous work before registering. A listing in a project procurement category indicates a potential requirement, not an awarded contract or a tender that is currently open.
How will the project benefit the surrounding community?
The Community Benefit Fund is planned to provide $470,000 each year. Atmos also lists $282,000 for First Nations training and workforce development and $200,000 for local employment initiatives with North Metro TAFE. The Yued Relationship Agreement adds a framework for local contracting, cultural programs and ranger involvement in land and Country stewardship.
Because the project remains on working agricultural land, construction and operations will need to be coordinated with existing farm activities. The published project commitments describe coexistence with farming, rather than a conversion of the entire site to industrial use.

The scale of the site and the stated 400-person peak workforce mean that delivery will involve a sequence of civil, electrical, turbine-transport and commissioning packages rather than a single construction trade.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 470 MW mean the wind farm will produce 470 MW continuously?
No. 470 MW is the project’s stated nameplate capacity. Actual output will rise and fall with wind conditions, so annual energy production cannot be inferred from the capacity figure alone.
What does “up to 78 turbines” mean for the final layout?
It indicates the published upper count, not a guarantee that every position will be installed. The final number can depend on detailed design, approvals, turbine selection and construction decisions.
Are Parron Maam Marang tenders open now?
The published material lists procurement categories and invites registrations of interest, but it does not confirm a complete contractor roster or a currently open tender. Suppliers should rely on a current notice from Atmos or an appointed main contractor before treating a package as available.
Will the wind farm displace farming on the site?
The project is planned on agricultural land with continued farming activity. Construction access, turbine foundations and electrical infrastructure will occupy defined areas, while the broader site is intended to remain compatible with existing agricultural operations.
