What Keurig’s compostable coffee pods are
Keurig Dr Pepper first announced the format in March 2024 under the name K-Rounds. The coffee is roasted beans that are ground, pressed into a tablet, and wrapped in a proprietary plant-based coating. The company said the tablets were designed for its new Alta system. Keurig Dr Pepper’s announcement said certification was still in progress at that time. October 2026 launch reporting describes the renamed AltaRounds as compostable. TechRadar’s launch coverage is secondary reporting, so check the current product packaging for its specific composting instructions.
Will AltaRounds work in your Keurig?
Only the Alta brewer is established as compatible with AltaRounds. The 2024 announcement says Alta also brews existing K-Cup pods, but it does not say that older K-Cup brewers can use AltaRounds. If you want to try the compostable format, factor in buying the new brewer; the tablets are not a drop-in replacement for K-Cups.

Are K-Cups compostable or recyclable?
Keurig describes standard K-Cup pods as recyclable polypropylene, not as compostable. The company says all K-Cup pods it produces have been made from recyclable plastic since 2020, but local recycling programs do not all accept the pods. Keurig’s disposal guidance is to peel off the lid, empty the grounds, and check with your local recycler about the pod. It also offers a mail-back option through its K-Cycle program. What to check before disposing of either format
- For AltaRounds: read the current packaging. The 2024 announcement noted certification was still in progress, while October 2026 coverage describes the launched product as compostable. Confirm whether the instructions call for home composting or a particular composting facility, and whether that option is available to you.
- For K-Cups: check local acceptance before putting the pod in recycling. Keurig’s recyclable-material claim is not a guarantee that your community collects or processes it.
Does compostable mean environmentally better?
Not necessarily. The available product information establishes a different material and disposal route, but it does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment comparing AltaRounds with K-Cups. Without a like-for-like assessment, there is no supported basis here for declaring one format the quantified environmental winner.
Keurig Dr Pepper reported that 96% of its packaging had been converted to recyclable or compostable packaging in 2025. That is a company-wide figure, not a result specific to K-Cups or AltaRounds. Keurig Dr Pepper’s sustainability information provides the company context.
