The Cygnet Cinema, also known as Como Theatre, is being upgraded for broader event use while retaining its cinema role. A 2024 report set out proposed works and an end-of-2025 target; the venue’s website, accessed 8 October 2026, still describes improvements in progress and says reopening depends on Stage Two work meeting building and health and safety requirements. The available information does not confirm the project is complete.
What is planned for the Cygnet Cinema?
The venue is on Preston Street in Como, Perth. In a report published on 23 May 2024, PerthNow said owner Australian Property Collective (APC) was awaiting heritage and council approvals for proposed work to the toilets, green room, seating, disability access and storage. The City of South Perth had separately granted development approval for alterations and additions to the café, stage and back-of-house facilities, according to PerthNow’s report.
The owner’s website now describes improvements involving food service, the lower and upper foyers, air conditioning, acoustic treatment, accessible toilets, administration and ticketing space, Cygnet Square, storage and logistics. These are the works the venue lists; that information does not by itself establish that each item is finished or that all approvals and compliance requirements have been met.
What kinds of events could it host?
In 2024, APC owner Garry Jackson described a mix of children’s shows during the day, plays, matinees and live music. He said: “We believe we can get this working into a multi-functioning event venue which has got everything from a variety of kids’ shows during the day, plays, matinees, and (live) music,” PerthNow reported. Jackson also cited a projected catchment of 120,000 people; this was his projection, not an independently verified attendance figure.

The current Como Theatre events page identifies Theatre180 and The Revival House as performance partners. It describes Theatre180 productions and The Revival House screenings from 16mm and 35mm film prints. The owner says scheduled events remain unchanged during improvements. It also notes that hearing assistance devices are available at the ticketing counter.
Is the redevelopment complete?
Completion and reopening are not confirmed by the available updates. PerthNow’s end-of-2025 completion date was a hoped-for target reported in May 2024, not a current schedule. The venue website, accessed 8 October 2026, says improvements are in progress and that the cinema cannot reopen until Stage Two work meets building and health and safety requirements. The site says significant structural work, including asbestos removal, had been completed, but its compliance statement is not clearly dated. It does not establish whether that statement has since been superseded or whether the full project is now complete.

Event listings continuing during the works are not proof that the cinema has reopened or that redevelopment is finished.

The City of South Perth’s 15 October 2019 council agenda records the Cygnet Theatre as built in 1938 and permanently listed on the State Register of Heritage Places. The agenda also summarizes a Preston Street Place Blueprint principle: respect the cinema’s prominence, restore it and support complementary uses—including cinema, live shows, music, theatre, restaurants and bars—to help sustain it. That is planning context from 2019, not confirmation that every later proposal or approval was adopted or completed.

The Heritage Council of Western Australia’s Places Database entry describes the building as Inter-War Functionalist and associates it with architect William Leighton and cinema entrepreneur James Stiles. It also records the site’s ongoing community value as a cinema and a $100,000 state heritage grant in 2013 for a digital projector.
In the 2024 PerthNow report, then acting City of South Perth CEO Gerry Adams said: “The city’s vision for its heritage buildings and places is for them to be protected, enhanced and celebrated,” and added: “The restoration works to date, as well as the new development proposal, will ensure the Cygnet theatre is utilised to its full potential for future generations.” Those remarks express the City’s stated aim; they do not certify the current project’s completion.
