If your HVAC system will not start, will not heat or cool, or keeps switching on and off, begin with simple checks: thermostat settings, the visible power switch, the filter, and accessible vents. These checks can identify common causes, but they cannot diagnose every fault. Stop and call a qualified HVAC professional for repeated breaker trips, suspected refrigerant or fuel problems, frozen coils, water near equipment, or symptoms that continue after basic checks.
Start with safe checks that apply to most systems
- Identify the equipment. Check whether you have a furnace, heat pump, central air conditioner, or room unit. Controls and troubleshooting steps vary by equipment and model, so follow its manual.
- Check the thermostat. Confirm the mode is set to Heat or Cool as needed, the fan setting is appropriate, and the temperature setting calls for heating or cooling. Check batteries only if the thermostat uses them.
- Look at the visible power switch. Confirm the system’s accessible service switch is on. Do not open electrical panels or equipment compartments to investigate wiring.
- Inspect the filter and accessible vents. A dirty filter or blocked vent can restrict airflow. If replacing the filter, use the size and type specified for your system; a higher-rated filter is not automatically suitable.
- For cooling problems, look without touching or opening equipment. Note any obvious ice or standing water. Do not handle refrigerant lines, remove panels, or attempt repairs beyond steps the equipment manual identifies as safe for a homeowner.
ENERGY STAR recommends regular filter inspection, cleaning, or replacement, but the right interval depends on the filter and operating conditions. Restricted airflow can reduce system efficiency by up to 15 percent, according to ENERGY STAR’s Maintenance Checklist.
System will not turn on
Confirm the thermostat is set to the intended mode and temperature, check applicable thermostat batteries, and make sure the visible system switch is on. You can look at the electrical panel to see whether a breaker has tripped, but do not repeatedly reset it. Trane advises contacting a professional about a tripped breaker because it may signal a serious underlying issue.
If the system remains unresponsive after these basic checks, or you suspect a wiring or control problem, arrange professional service rather than opening the equipment.

Furnace runs but blows cool or weak air
Confirm the thermostat is in Heat mode and check the fan setting. Inspect the filter and make sure accessible vents are open. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and contribute to poor comfort or protective shutdowns; replace it only with a size and type approved for the equipment.
If the furnace continues to blow cool or weak air, cycles off, or appears to have an ignition, fuel, or combustion problem, stop troubleshooting and call a qualified professional. Do not work on gas or oil connections or furnace combustion components.

Air conditioner runs but does not cool
Check that the thermostat is in Cool mode and set below the current room temperature. Inspect the filter and replace it if dirty, using the specified type. If safely accessible, clear loose debris around the outdoor unit without opening it or reaching inside.
Poor cooling can have several causes, including incorrect settings, restricted airflow, dirty or frozen coils, drainage trouble, or a refrigerant problem. The symptom alone does not identify the fault. If you see ice, cooling remains poor, or you suspect a leak or electrical issue, stop using the system as appropriate and arrange service. Refrigerant diagnosis and repair belong to a technician. The U.S. Department of Energy’s central air-conditioning guide also discusses maintenance and cooling-system operation.

Water near the indoor unit or a cooling system that will not start
A clogged condensate drain can lead to water damage and may activate a safety shutdown if the system has a float switch. ENERGY STAR notes: “A plugged drain can cause water damage in the house and affect indoor humidity levels.”
If water is near the equipment, avoid operating anything that may be unsafe and do not attempt invasive drain clearing unless the manual explicitly describes a safe homeowner step. Arrange service for water damage risk, a recurring blockage, or an uncertain cause. Trane’s troubleshooting guidance covers common air-conditioning power and drain concerns.

Frequent cycling or unusual noise
Check thermostat placement and settings, then inspect the visible filter and accessible vents for obstructions. If the system continues to switch on and off frequently, or the noise suggests ignition or mechanical trouble, schedule professional service. Repeated cycling can have causes that cannot be safely distinguished through visual checks alone.
When to stop troubleshooting
- A breaker trips; do not keep resetting it.
- You see frozen coils, persistent ice, or suspect a refrigerant leak.
- Water is accumulating near equipment or a drain problem persists.
- You suspect an electrical, fuel, ignition, combustion, or mechanical fault.
- The problem continues after the relevant thermostat, filter, vent, and visible-switch checks.
For any repair, use a qualified professional and follow the equipment manual, warranty requirements, and applicable local rules. The appropriate service and repair steps depend on the system and location.
