Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes—cement-specific concrete pigments are generally suitable for colored concrete when the product has appropriate technical documentation and is handled according to its current safety data sheet (SDS). Synthetic iron oxides are the common integral-color chemistry described by major suppliers. The color is distributed through the concrete matrix rather than applied only to the surface, so it does not simply peel away; however, shade consistency and long-term appearance still depend on batching, curing, finishing, exposure, and maintenance.
For performance, use ASTM C979/C979M-24 as the principal reference. It addresses alkali resistance, light resistance, water solubility, and effects on concrete, and sets a maximum prescribed dosage of 10% of cement mass. Always approve a fully cured test panel made with the actual cement, aggregates, admixtures, finishing method, and curing system before placing a driveway, patio, pavers, steps, or other visible work.

Are concrete pigments safe?
“Safe” is product-specific. A pigment intended for cementitious systems should be evaluated from its current SDS, technical data, labeling, and intended-use instructions—not from color alone or from a generic statement that all oxides are harmless.

ASTM C979/C979M-24 is a performance specification for pigments used in concrete and related cementitious materials. Its testing includes resistance to alkali, resistance to light, water solubility, and effects on concrete. It also limits the maximum prescribed dosage to 10 mass% of cement. That standard helps establish performance in concrete; it is not a blanket certification for inhalation safety, skin exposure, or every jobsite handling condition.

Common chemistry
Manufacturers commonly describe compliant integral-color products as synthetic iron oxides. Davis Colors, for example, characterizes most of its products as synthetic iron oxide and “inert” and states that they comply with ASTM C979. That is a manufacturer description, not a substitute for reading the SDS for the exact product and color.
Dust and handling controls
Dry pigment can become airborne during opening, weighing, and charging a mixer. Follow the SDS for required respiratory, eye, skin, and clothing protection, and use the supplier’s stated ventilation and storage controls. Practical controls include opening bags slowly, avoiding unnecessary pouring from height, keeping containers closed, and cleaning spills without creating a dust cloud. Do not assume that a pigment is safe to inhale because it is insoluble or used in concrete.
- Confirm the product is made for cementitious systems.
- Obtain the current SDS and technical data sheet for the exact product.
- Check hazard classifications, first-aid measures, PPE, dust controls, and storage limits.
- Train everyone who weighs, mixes, cuts, grinds, or cleans colored concrete.
How durable is colored concrete outdoors?
Integral color is durable because pigment particles are dispersed through the concrete matrix. Normal surface wear may expose aggregate or change the surface texture, but the color does not behave like a thin paint film that can delaminate. ASTM C979 testing addresses light and alkali resistance, and Solomon Colors describes its iron-oxide pigments as light-fast, insoluble, and alkali resistant. Sika’s integral-color products are likewise designed for permanent coloration and recommend jobsite testing.
Those characteristics do not guarantee one uniform appearance on every project. Cement color, water content, aggregate, admixtures, finishing, curing, weather during placement, and later abrasion all influence the result. A pale cement, for example, usually produces a different shade than a gray cement at the same pigment dosage. Extra water, delayed finishing, or inconsistent batches can create light and dark areas that may be mistaken for pigment failure.
Will integral color fade or wear off?
Light-fast iron-oxide pigments are intended to resist ordinary ultraviolet exposure, but the surface can still look different over time. Dirt, efflorescence, tire marks, deicing salts, abrasion, and weathering affect appearance. A heavily trafficked driveway can lose surface paste and reveal more aggregate, changing perceived color even when pigment remains in the concrete below. Grinding, aggressive pressure washing, acid exposure, or unsuitable cleaners can remove or alter the surface layer and create apparent fading.

What dosage should go into a 94-lb bag?
Dosage is calculated by mass of cement or cementitious material, not by the visual size of the bag. ASTM C979/C979M-24 sets a maximum prescribed dosage of 10 mass% of cement. For a 94-lb cementitious sack, that ceiling works out to 9.4 lb of pigment:
| Calculation | Result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 94 lb cementitious material × 10% | 9.4 lb pigment | Maximum prescribed dosage under ASTM C979/C979M-24; not a universal color recipe |
| Direct Colors example | 9.4 lb per 94-lb sack | Product-specific example on a sheet issued August 19, 2026 |
The Direct Colors sheet also lists 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-lb shade steps for the covered color codes and identifies 29 iron-oxide color codes. Those increments are guidance for that product line, not instructions for every pigment. A different supplier may use another dosage basis, concentration, carrier, or shade scale.
How to calculate a project dosage
- Determine the actual cement or cementitious-material mass in one batch.
- Read the pigment manufacturer’s recommended dosage range and whether it is based on cement, total cementitious material, or another measure.
- Convert the recommendation to a weighed amount; do not measure dry pigment by volume.
- Keep the same cement brand, aggregate proportions, water content, admixtures, pigment mass, and mixing sequence for every batch.
- Stay at or below the applicable 10% maximum prescribed dosage and any lower supplier limit.
Weighing matters because small errors are visible in a light tint. Premeasured packages or a calibrated scale improve repeatability, especially when several truckloads or mixer batches must match.
How do you choose pigment for a driveway, patio, pavers, or steps?
Start with the exposure and production method, then compare products on evidence and handling rather than color chips alone.

Driveways
Driveways face tire abrasion, oil, deicing products, freeze-thaw exposure, and dirt. Select a pigment and concrete mix that tolerate the site climate, then specify a compatible sealer only after the concrete has cured and the supplier’s instructions are understood. Plan for the possibility that traffic will change surface texture and perceived color even when the integral pigment remains.

Patios and steps
Patios and steps are highly visible, so shade approval and uniform finishing are especially important. Steps also need slip-conscious finishing; do not sacrifice traction for a darker or glossier appearance. Use the same curing and cleaning system on the test panel that will be used on the finished work.
Pavers and manufactured units
For pavers or other factory-produced units, ask how the manufacturer controls cement, aggregate moisture, pigment dosage, and curing. Factory consistency can be an advantage, but replacement units may come from a different production batch. Record the color code and batch information for future repairs.
Why is a fully cured test panel essential?
Color cards and wet samples cannot show the final appearance reliably. Make a representative panel with the actual cement, aggregates, admixtures, water content, pigment, finishing tools, curing method, and sealer planned for the project.
- Use the same batch proportions and dosage that the placement will use.
- Apply the intended finish, including brooming, stamping, exposed aggregate, or other texture.
- Cure the panel for the supplier’s specified period and under the planned conditions.
- Evaluate it dry and in the lighting where the work will be viewed.
- Check uniformity, mottling, texture, slip characteristics, and compatibility with the proposed cleaner or sealer.
- Obtain written approval before production and retain the panel and batch records.
Sika and other suppliers recommend jobsite testing because laboratory color references cannot reproduce every local material and weather condition. The panel is also the best way to discover that a chosen shade changes when the cement, aggregate, admixture, or curing system changes.

How should colored concrete be mixed and placed?
Control the batch
Use consistent material sources and measure water accurately. Do not add water at the truck or mixer to make placement easier unless the approved mix design allows it. Extra water lightens color, increases variability, and can raise the risk of surface defects.
Disperse pigment completely
Follow the pigment supplier’s sequence for charging powder, liquid, or granular product. Keep mixing long enough to distribute the pigment without leaving streaks or clumps, and use the same sequence for every batch. Record pigment mass, batch size, cement type, water, admixtures, mixing time, weather, and finishing crew.
Finish consistently
Uneven evaporation, delayed finishing, bleed water, or working bleed water into the surface can produce mottling. Keep finishing practices consistent across the placement and avoid adding water to the surface. Protect the slab from contamination, rain, and rapid drying while it sets.
How do you cure colored concrete without mottling?
Follow the color manufacturer’s curing instructions rather than selecting a cover by habit. Euclid warns that plastic, visqueen, or curing blankets can cause discoloration or mottling in integrally colored concrete. Covers may trap moisture unevenly, imprint texture, or create different drying conditions at overlaps and edges.

- Keep edges, joints, repairs, and adjacent batches under the same curing conditions.
- Do not switch curing systems because of weather without checking compatibility.
- Allow the concrete to reach the specified cure before sealing or using aggressive cleaning.
If a cover is unavoidable, obtain the pigment and concrete supplier’s written direction on material, timing, contact, and removal. A curing method that works for plain gray concrete can create visible color variation in an integral-color slab.

How should colored concrete be cleaned and maintained?
Maintenance should remove contaminants without attacking the cement paste, finish, pigment, or sealer. Use only cleaners and sealers documented as compatible with the concrete finish and pigment system.
- Remove dirt, leaves, oil, and deicing residue with the mildest compatible cleaner first.
- Test any cleaner, pressure-washing setting, stain remover, or sealer on an inconspicuous area or retained test panel.
- Avoid unapproved acids, harsh solvents, abrasive methods, and excessive pressure that can etch or strip the surface.
- Follow the sealer manufacturer’s requirements for cure, surface moisture, temperature, recoat timing, and ventilation.
- Reapply sealer only when the existing film and concrete condition support it; a sealer cannot correct inconsistent pigment distribution or curing mottling.
Keep records of the pigment code, dosage, cement and aggregate sources, curing product, sealer, and cleaning products. Those records make future repairs and troubleshooting more reliable.
Common problems and practical fixes
Patchy or mottled color
Likely causes include inconsistent water, variable cement or aggregate moisture, uneven finishing, bleed water, weather changes, or an incompatible cover. Compare the affected area with batch and curing records, then have the concrete and pigment suppliers assess the condition before applying a stain, dye, or coating.
Color is lighter than the approved panel
Check cement color, pigment mass, water addition, surface laitance, curing, and whether the slab was viewed wet or dry. Do not automatically add more pigment to a later batch; correct the controlled variable identified by the records and make another panel if necessary.
Surface looks faded or worn
Determine whether the change is dirt, sealer failure, abrasion, aggregate exposure, chemical damage, or true pigment alteration. Clean with a compatible method and test any restoration product before broad application.
Powder is clumped or dosing is inconsistent
Moisture exposure during storage is a common risk. Isolate compromised material, check the supplier’s shelf-life and storage requirements, and do not force clumps through a batch if they cannot disperse uniformly.
