Reported on February 1, 2025, it uses an E Ink Spectra 6 display and transfers images through NFC and Bluetooth rather than requiring Wi-Fi or a cloud account.
That makes it different from a conventional LCD photo frame: the image is reflective, does not continuously glow, and uses power mainly when the display refreshes. However, the original product was presented in connection with Kickstarter, so its current shipping status, retail availability, final pricing, warranty, and long-term software support should be verified before purchase.

What the Reflection Frame is
The Reflection Frame is intended to occupy the space between printed wall art and a digital picture frame. Instead of permanently displaying one print—or behaving like a small television—it uses color E Ink to hold a still artwork or photograph until the owner chooses to replace it.

Creative Design Worx presented the frame with interchangeable magnetic mats, allowing the surrounding appearance to be changed without replacing the entire unit. The concept is suited to seasonal artwork, family photographs, offices, bedrooms, reading areas, and other rooms where a glowing screen would be distracting.

New Atlas reported the product on February 1, 2025 in connection with a Kickstarter campaign. A campaign announcement, prototype demonstration, preorder, confirmed shipment, and mature retail product are different milestones; the reviewed source does not establish all of them.
How tap-to-update works
- Open the companion mobile app and choose an artwork or photograph.
- Tap the phone against the frame’s NFC area.
- NFC starts the interaction or identifies the frame.
- The image is transferred over Bluetooth.
- The E Ink display refreshes and retains the new image.
“Tap-to-print” is a description of the experience, not literal printing. No ink is deposited on paper. The frame electronically rearranges colored particles in its ePaper display. The reported local-transfer approach does not require Wi-Fi or cloud services to change the image, which can reduce dependence on an account or remote server.
The update is not necessarily instantaneous like changing a phone screen. E Ink refreshes can take time and may include visible flashing or color transitions. The reported descriptions of updates in seconds should be treated as product reporting, not an independently measured performance result.

E Ink is a reflective display technology. It uses ambient light, much like printed material, rather than shining light continuously from behind the image. Once refreshed, a static image can remain visible with little ongoing display power.

That produces a calmer, less screen-like appearance, but “paper-like” does not mean identical to a high-quality print. Spectra 6 uses a limited color-particle system, so colors may appear muted or poster-like compared with an OLED, LCD, or photographic print. Gradients, fine details, and some photographs will not reproduce with the same smoothness or saturation.
E Ink’s explanation of its Gallery technology describes color particles positioned within pixels. That explanation should not automatically be treated as a specification for every Spectra 6 product: Spectra 6 is a related color ePaper platform with its own rendering characteristics.
Lighting is a central trade-off
The reported Reflection Frame has no built-in lighting. It should look natural in daylight or a suitably lit room, but it may be difficult to see in a dark bedroom or hallway. An external lamp solves that problem while preserving the non-glowing display, although it is less convenient than a front-lit product.
This is also why “no blue light” and “easy on the eyes” need careful wording. An unlit reflective display does not emit light like an LCD, but that is a viewing characteristic—not evidence that it prevents eye strain or provides a medical benefit. Front-lit color ePaper products need to be evaluated separately.

Reflection Frame versus current alternatives
Color E Ink frames are not one uniform category. Some emphasize local phone transfers, some are connected photo frames, and others are large-format art installations.

SwitchBot’s own page warns that larger Spectra 6 pixels produce lower resolution and that the display is best viewed from a distance. Its battery figure is a manufacturer claim, not a universal result. Aura’s figure likewise varies with front-light use, update frequency, Wi-Fi strength, and other conditions. SmartPlusArt’s battery and artwork-count statements are first-party claims.
Which type suits your room?
Choose a local tap-based frame when
- You change artwork occasionally rather than running a slideshow.
- You prefer minimal connectivity and local phone transfers.
- The wall receives adequate ambient light.
- You want the appearance of calm, static wall art rather than a glowing display.
Choose a connected app-based frame when
- You need remote updates or scheduled changes.
- Several family members should upload photographs.
- You want cloud galleries, AI artwork, or multiple-frame management.
- The frame will be installed somewhere difficult to reach.
Choose a large-format art display when
- The frame is a major interior-design feature.
- You want curated art at substantial wall scale.
- You are furnishing a hospitality, retail, office, or gallery-like space.
- You accept premium pricing for size and framing.
Choose an LCD frame when
- Bright, saturated photographs matter more than a print-like appearance.
- You need video, animation, rapid transitions, or strong performance in dim rooms.
- Low upfront cost is more important than low idle power and reduced screen glow.
Practical limitations to check
NFC does not trigger
As general troubleshooting—not confirmed Reflection Frame-specific faults—check that NFC and Bluetooth are enabled, open the companion app first, remove a thick or magnetic phone case, and move the phone slowly over the frame to locate the NFC area. Try another compatible phone and confirm the handset and operating system are supported.

NFC may only initiate the connection. The actual transfer can still depend on Bluetooth permissions, the app’s state, battery level, file processing, and handset compatibility.

The image looks dull
Limited Spectra 6 color reproduction, image conversion, dithering, weak room lighting, and unsuitable source material can all contribute. Artwork with clear shapes, moderate contrast, and restrained color is likely to translate better than a heavily detailed photograph. Do not expect every image to look photographic.
The battery claim seems unrealistic
A static E Ink image needs little display power, but refreshes, wireless communication, app activity, battery electronics, and front lighting still consume energy. Treat “up to two years,” “up to three months,” and “more than 1,000 changes” as manufacturer or first-party claims that depend on usage.
Questions to answer before buying
For the original Reflection Frame, verify whether the product is shipping now, whether an app account is required, whether images can be transferred entirely locally, how long a full refresh takes, whether subscriptions or licensing restrictions apply, whether the battery is replaceable, what mounting hardware is included, and what happens if the company discontinues its app.

Those ownership questions matter more for a crowdfunding-origin product than for a conventional print. Long-term support, replacement parts, warranty coverage, and software compatibility can determine whether the frame remains useful years after installation.
