Coffea arabica can grow as an indoor evergreen shrub when given bright light, warmth, humidity and evenly moist—but not waterlogged—soil. It is possible for a mature plant to flower and form red coffee cherries at home, but flowering and a usable harvest are not guaranteed.

What a coffee plant needs indoors

Coffea arabica is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree that can be grown as a houseplant in temperate climates. Its basic needs are bright light, a well-draining, organically rich growing medium, steady moisture, humidity and protection from cold and drafts. The details vary with growing setting, so treat published temperature and seasonal-care guidance as useful ranges rather than universal thresholds.

  • Light: Give an indoor plant bright light. Outdoors, North Carolina State University Extension recommends partial shade.
  • Temperature: For houseplant cultivation, North Carolina State University Extension gives daytime temperatures of 70–80°F and nighttime temperatures of 60–65°F. It notes that leaf drop may occur below 55°F; avoid exposing the plant to cold.
  • Humidity: Aim for moderate to high humidity and keep the plant away from drafts. The sources do not specify a numeric indoor humidity target.
  • Soil: Choose an organically rich medium that drains well. The Royal Horticultural Society’s glasshouse guidance specifies peat-free, loam-based compost with added organic matter.

How to water and feed it

Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but do not leave the roots sitting in water. How often to water depends on the pot, growing medium and how quickly conditions dry; check the medium rather than following a fixed calendar.

The Royal Horticultural Society recommends free watering during the growing season and moderate watering in winter for glasshouse plants. It also recommends balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. These are seasonal glasshouse recommendations, not a guaranteed schedule for every indoor plant: adjust watering to the plant’s conditions and follow the fertilizer label.

Repotting and propagation

Repotting

The Royal Horticultural Society recommends repotting every two to three years in spring. Use a well-draining growing medium and a pot with drainage so excess water can escape.

Growing from seed

Propagation is possible from fresh seed, but germination may be erratic, so do not count on quick or uniform results. University of Florida IFAS Extension reports that Arabica flowers are self-fertile and that varieties come true to type from seed. That describes the species’ reproductive characteristics; it does not establish a predictable timetable for a seed-grown houseplant to mature.

Will an indoor coffee plant flower or produce cherries?

It may, given suitable conditions and enough time. North Carolina State University Extension reports that small, fragrant white flowers appear about three to four years after initial planting, in late spring to early summer. The Royal Horticultural Society describes plants around four years old producing white, fragrant flowers, followed by green fruits that ripen over several months into red cherries.

These are horticultural expectations, not a promise for an indoor specimen. A plant that flowers may form fruit, but flowering alone does not guarantee a useful home harvest. Kew identifies Arabica as a major coffee species, accounting for around 65% of global coffee production; that figure describes coffee production, not what a houseplant can yield. Kew’s Arabica coffee overview also reports an estimate that climate change alone could contribute to a decline of up to 50% or more in wild Arabica populations by 2088. This is conservation context, not a houseplant-care measure.

Check leaves and stems for pests

North Carolina State University Extension lists scale, mealybugs, thrips, caterpillars and mites as pests of coffee plants. Inspect leaves and stems regularly. If you find damage or insects, identify the pest before choosing a treatment; the cited species guidance does not establish a specific pesticide protocol.
