In Vectric’s VCarve inlay workflow, the pocket and plug must use the same V-bit. A reliable fit also depends on glue gap, surface clearance, cutter and machine accuracy, material movement, and finish thickness—so no single setting suits every project.
How a CNC V-carve inlay works
The inlay has two parts: a pocket cut into the base material and a plug cut from separate stock. The plug seats in the pocket, and the assembled surfaces are brought level to create the finished design. Vectric describes its VCarve Inlay toolpath as generating the pocket and plug toolpaths for the two parts. Vectric’s VCarve Inlay toolpath documentation covers the workflow in VCarve Pro V12.5.
Vectric’s beginner project page lists compatibility with Aspire, VCarve Pro, and VCarve Desktop version 9.5 or later for that project. This does not establish that every inlay feature is identical across all editions or versions. Vectric’s inlay basics project explains the two-material concept.
Set up the pocket and plug toolpaths
Use the same V-bit for both sides
In Vectric’s inlay workflow, the same V-bit is required for the pocket and plug to fit correctly. If you change the cutter, delete and regenerate the inlay toolpath with the new bit; changing only one side can leave the two parts mismatched. After calculation, the pocket and plug toolpath sets are separate. If you change one, its counterpart may need a matching change. When unsure, Vectric advises deleting both sets and generating them again from the original inlay form. The documentation does not prescribe one V-bit angle for all projects.

Set pocket depth and glue gap
Pocket depth is the maximum depth of the pocket; the cut may not reach that depth everywhere because the result depends on the vector design and bit angle. Glue gap is the distance between the top of the plug and the bottom of the pocket when the parts are assembled. It must be greater than zero and less than the pocket depth.
Vectric calls 0.001–0.01 in (0.02–0.2 mm) a common glue-gap range, while noting that the suitable value varies by project. Treat that as vendor guidance, not a guaranteed fit or a universal setting. Vectric’s VCarve Pro V12.5 documentation defines the setting and its limits.

Choose surface clearance for the cleanup you want
Surface clearance controls the separation between the lowest point of the plug and the highest point of the pocket material. A larger clearance leaves less plug material to remove after assembly; a smaller clearance brings the materials closer and leaves a sturdier plug. Vectric requires the setting to be greater than zero and less than the material thickness.
Decide based on the plug’s remaining strength and the amount of cleanup you can manage. The documentation does not give one value that works across stock thicknesses, designs, and machines.

Account for cutter geometry and real-world fit
Matching toolpaths do not guarantee a physical fit. Cutters leave radii at internal corners of cut shapes and external corners of pockets; equal nominal dimensions can therefore interfere at corners. Vectric’s Aspire documentation describes allowance as a way to compensate for this geometry. Allowance can be applied to the male or female side, but the appropriate amount depends on the material’s expansion or contraction between cutting and assembly, tool and machine accuracy, and finish thickness. Vectric’s allowance guidance explains these fit factors without establishing a universal allowance value.
- Consider how the stock may move between machining and assembly.
- Account for the accuracy of the cutter and machine rather than assuming nominal dimensions are exact.
- Include finish thickness if the mating surfaces or edges will be coated.
- Make a project-specific test cut where fit is critical; the common glue-gap range alone cannot guarantee the result.
When to add a clearance cutter
A V-bit can cut the inlay geometry, but larger open regions may be cleared more efficiently with an additional tool. Vectric lists end mills, ball-nose cutters, and engraving cutters as optional clearance tools. Earlier tools in the list remove material where they fit; later tools machine areas the preceding tools could not reach. Put the tools in the order you intend to run them on the machine, and choose the sequence for the design geometry and actual setup. Vectric’s toolpath documentation describes the clearance-tool options.

Choose where the plug is cut
The plug destination setting can place mirrored plug vectors and toolpaths on the same sheet as the pocket or on a different sheet. For the plug’s outer boundary, VCarve can use the sheet limits or a vector offset. An offset may reduce the amount of material cut around the plug, but it can require extra processing to free the plug from the surrounding stock. Select the destination and boundary method according to the available stock and how you plan to release the part.

Settings that depend on your machine and material
The documented workflow does not establish a universal feed rate, spindle speed, depth per pass, bit diameter, material pairing, adhesive, clamping method, or finishing schedule. Those choices depend on the machine, cutter, stock, toolpath, and process. Use the guidance for your own equipment and materials, then verify the fit and workflow with an appropriate test piece before cutting a project-critical inlay.
