Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has reportedly permitted the State Highways Department to resume construction on the elevated corridor above Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations. The 3.2-km Teynampet–Saidapet project is expected to be ready by March 2027, according to a forecast from a senior highways official reported by The New Indian Express on 3 October 2026. That is a projected completion target, not a confirmed opening date.
What CMRL’s reported permission means
The reported approval allows the State Highways Department to resume work that had been stalled for several months above Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations. The newspaper does not specify exactly when CMRL granted permission. It attributes the project update to officials; it is not a direct CMRL announcement.
The corridor is a four-lane elevated road between Teynampet and Saidapet. The newspaper describes it as the country’s first elevated corridor built directly above an operational metro tunnel; that characterization is the report’s, rather than an independently verified national comparison.
How the elevated road is being built over the metro
The reported design uses two structural approaches, matched to the location. Steel piers support deck slabs along most of the corridor. Above the stations, portal frames are intended to carry the decks across the constrained section.

| Location | Reported structure | Purpose or detail |
|---|---|---|
| Most of the corridor | Steel piers supporting deck slabs | The standard arrangement along the wider route. |
| About 300 m above Teynampet and Nandanam stations | Portal frames, recommended at 15 m intervals | Carry the deck through the station section; a highways official said the frame legs would sit on the metro station walls, 14–15 m below road level. |
According to the report, minor differences from the original design prompted CMRL to appoint a Japanese consultant to review it. A joint study by the State Highways Department and the consultant reportedly found no major design flaw and recommended portal frames across the 300-metre station stretch.
The same report says foundations were drilled to 7 m below the road surface to avoid disturbing a metro tunnel reported to lie 14–15 m underground. Those depth figures describe the arrangement as reported by the newspaper, not a general specification for the entire project.

Reported construction progress
As reported on 3 October 2026, deck-slab work was complete along 2.3 km and 50 of the project’s 69 piers had been erected. Work above the two stations had been stalled for several months. These are progress figures reported by The New Indian Express from officials, not figures independently confirmed here through a CMRL project announcement.
The report also said labour shortages affecting prefabricated steel manufacturing had been resolved, while construction was permitted for only six hours a day. Both the work window and progress status can change as construction continues.

When is the Teynampet–Saidapet corridor expected to be ready?
A senior highways official told The New Indian Express that the corridor was expected to be ready by March 2027. The official also said portal-frame installation alone would take at least three to four months. The March date is therefore an attributed forecast, not a guaranteed opening date; the report does not establish a confirmed public opening schedule.
