A good mudroom is not just a row of pretty cubbies. It is a traffic-control system for shoes, coats, bags, pets, mail, rain gear, snow, salt, and whatever comes in from the garage or driveway. The best mudrooms keep the dirty, wet items near the door, give every regular user a landing zone, and protect the floor and lower walls from daily abuse.
For most homes, the smartest mudroom location is the entry your family actually uses: the garage door, side door, driveway entrance, laundry room, or kitchen entry. The formal front door may look better in photos, but if the backpacks and boots come through the garage, that is where the storage needs to be.
On our job sites, we start with three questions before talking about finishes: how many people use this entry every day, what items pile up there now, and how much clear walking space must stay open. From there, the design becomes much easier. Below are 25 mudroom ideas and storage hacks that work in real homes, with practical dimensions, 2026 cost ranges, and notes on when a simple DIY upgrade is enough versus when built-ins, flooring, electrical, plumbing, or an addition should involve a pro.
Start With the Mudroom Layout, Not the Cabinets
Before you buy hooks, benches, or cabinets, measure the traffic path. A mudroom that blocks the route from the garage to the kitchen will fail no matter how attractive the millwork is. Try to preserve at least a 36-inch clear walking lane wherever possible. In tighter older homes, 30 inches may be the practical minimum, but anything narrower will feel pinched once coats and bags are hanging.

Think in zones from the door inward. The first 24 to 36 inches should handle wet shoes, umbrellas, and drips. The next zone should allow people to sit, remove boots, hang coats, and drop bags. The cleanest storage, such as drawers, mail, keys, charging, and seasonal shelves, belongs farther from the wet threshold.
1. Create a True Wet Zone at the Door
The cheapest mudroom improvement is often the most useful: a real wet zone. Use a heavy boot tray, washable rubber mat, textured tile landing, or drainable mat directly inside the door. For snowy or rainy climates, plan for at least 24 inches of depth, though 36 inches is better for families with multiple pairs of boots.
If you are remodeling, protect the bottom 12 to 24 inches of the wall with tile wainscot, PVC beadboard, composite trim, or sealed wall panels. Drywall and MDF placed right at floor level take a beating from wet shoes, salt, and mop water.
2. Keep the Bench Out of the Walking Lane
A mudroom bench should usually be 16 to 20 inches high and 15 to 18 inches deep. That is enough depth for an adult to sit while changing shoes without projecting too far into the room. If the bench faces a wall, cabinet, or appliances, try to keep at least 36 inches of clearance in front of it.
For strength, do not treat the bench like a decorative shelf. A family mudroom bench should handle adults sitting on it every day. We typically look for solid framing, proper fastening into studs or blocking, and durable painted plywood or hardwood components rather than flimsy particleboard.
3. Assign One Vertical Zone Per Person
For a busy household, one hook zone or locker per regular user is the cleanest way to stop the daily pileup. A good single-user locker is often 18 to 24 inches wide, 15 to 18 inches deep, and 72 to 84 inches tall. In smaller homes, even a 12-inch-wide hook column per person can work if you keep seasonal overflow somewhere else.
For children, put at least one hook at a reachable height, often 36 to 48 inches from the floor. Adult hooks commonly land around 60 to 66 inches high. If hooks are too high, coats end up on the bench or floor.
25 Clever Mudroom Ideas and Storage Hacks
4. Use Open Hooks for Daily Items
Open hooks beat hangers for everyday coats, backpacks, dog leashes, and tote bags. They are faster, easier for kids, and more forgiving when people come in with wet gear. Install hooks into studs, solid backing, or a properly anchored rail. Bulky coats need breathing room, so space hooks 6 to 8 inches apart at minimum; 9 to 12 inches is better for winter gear.
5. Add Closed Cabinets Where the Mudroom Is Visible
Open cubbies look convenient, but they can make a kitchen or hallway feel messy during normal use. If the mudroom opens directly to a main living area, mix open and closed storage. Use hooks for daily items and cabinet doors for extra shoes, sports gear, cleaning supplies, paper clutter, and seasonal overflow.
Closed storage costs more, but it usually looks better long term. Custom mudroom cabinets often run about $300 to $600 per cabinet, and full custom locker-and-bench systems commonly land around $1,250 to $4,000 or more depending on length, doors, drawers, material, and finish.
6. Put Pull-Out Shoe Drawers Under the Bench
Open shoe shelves get messy quickly. A pull-out drawer or rolling tray under the bench lets each person slide shoes out, then hide them again. Plan about 6 to 8 inches of vertical space for low shoes and 12 to 16 inches for boots. Use full-extension slides rated for the expected load, especially if kids will lean on drawers or overfill them.
7. Use Boot Trays Below a Floating Bench
A floating bench with open space below is one of the most practical small mudroom ideas. It keeps shoes off the walking path and makes cleaning easier. Leave 10 to 14 inches below the bench for shoes or boot trays. In wet climates, use a washable tray instead of letting boots sit directly on wood flooring.

8. Build High Seasonal Shelves
The space above lockers is ideal for labeled bins: winter hats, sunscreen, sports accessories, guest gear, and off-season items. Keep high shelves 12 to 18 inches deep so bins do not become awkward to lift down. For resale, built-in upper cabinets or clean shelves usually look more architectural than a stack of mismatched storage totes.
9. Add a Slim Broom and Utility Cabinet
A 9- to 15-inch-wide vertical cabinet can hold a broom, mop, vacuum wand, umbrellas, dog towels, and cleaning sprays. If the mudroom is near the kitchen or garage, this narrow cabinet often earns its space faster than another open cubby.
10. Create a Pet Leash and Towel Drawer
Pet gear spreads out fast: leashes, waste bags, grooming wipes, treats, towels, harnesses, and muddy toys. A shallow drawer near the door keeps those items contained. If you have dogs coming in from a yard, add washable hooks for towels and a mat large enough for paws before they reach wood floors or carpet.
11. Include a Mail, Key, and Sunglasses Drop Zone
A mudroom should have a small clean landing area that is not also the wet boot area. A 24- to 36-inch-wide counter, wall shelf, or drawer stack can handle keys, wallets, mail, sunglasses, and garage remotes. If clutter is a concern, use one shallow drawer for each adult instead of a single open tray.

12. Hide Charging in a Drawer
A charging drawer keeps phones, tablets, earbuds, and power cords out of sight. This is a good time to think about electrical needs. Adding outlets, moving outlets, installing hardwired lighting, or creating a charging station may require permits and should be done to current electrical standards. In laundry-adjacent or damp areas, GFCI protection may be required depending on location and circuit conditions.
13. Use Ventilated Shoe Shelves
Wet shoes stored in sealed cabinets can smell and damage finishes. Use grille doors, perforated panels, open backs, wire shelves, or intentional air gaps for shoe storage. Even a 1-inch gap at the back of shelves helps air move. In cold or humid regions, ventilation matters as much as shelf count.
14. Install a Fold-Down Drying Rack
A wall-mounted fold-down rack is useful for gloves, hats, light jackets, sports uniforms, and wet towels. Put it where dripping water will hit tile, LVP, a mat, or a washable surface. Avoid placing drying racks over unsealed wood benches or directly above open shoe drawers.
15. Add an Umbrella Drip Tray
Umbrellas need vertical storage with a washable bottom. A narrow tray, tall metal bin, or cabinet with a waterproof base keeps water away from trim and flooring. If you build umbrella storage into cabinetry, use a removable tray so the homeowner can clean it.
16. Use Toe-Kick Drawers for Flat Items
Toe-kick drawers are a clever place for pet bowls, shoe-care supplies, extra laces, reusable bags, or seasonal items. They work best in custom cabinetry where the drawer hardware and toe space can be planned from the start. They are not ideal for wet boots because airflow is limited.
17. Add Wall-Mounted Rails Instead of Random Hooks
A continuous rail with hooks spreads load better and looks cleaner than individual hooks scattered across drywall. A painted wood rail, metal rail system, or peg rail can be installed at adult height, child height, or both. In remodels, we prefer adding blocking behind the wall before cabinets or rails go in, especially for heavy backpacks and winter coats.
18. Use Washable Wall Panels Behind Hooks
Coats, bags, and shoes rub against the wall every day. Satin or semi-gloss washable paint is the minimum. For better durability, use PVC beadboard, sealed shiplap, tile wainscot, composite panels, or FRP panels in utility-heavy mudrooms. Caulk wet edges and use moisture-resistant trim at the floor.
19. Add a Pocket Door or Barn-Style Slider Where Swing Space Is Tight
If a swinging door blocks the bench, laundry machines, garage path, or storage wall, a pocket door can recover valuable floor area. This is more involved than swapping hardware because pocket doors affect framing, electrical, and wall cavities. A surface-mounted sliding door may be easier, but it needs clear wall space beside the opening.

20. Build Adjustable Shelves and Removable Dividers
Families change. Kids grow, sports change, and hobbies rotate. Adjustable shelves and removable vertical dividers keep the mudroom useful for more than one season of life. Fixed cubbies look clean, but they can become frustrating when a backpack, hockey bag, stroller gear, or work boots do not fit.
21. Add Task Lighting at the Bench
A single ceiling light in the middle of the room often leaves the bench and cabinets shadowed. Put light where people tie shoes, sort bags, and read labels. Good options include recessed lights, a flush-mount fixture plus under-cabinet lighting, or low-profile LED strips inside taller cabinets. Use switches that are easy to reach from the entry.
22. Create a Sports Gear Bay
Sports equipment needs different storage than coats. Use taller open bays for bats, sticks, rackets, yoga mats, and folding chairs. Add heavy-duty hooks for helmets and bags. A ventilated bin or wire basket works better than a closed drawer for sweaty gear.
23. Plan a Pet Wash Like a Wet Room
A pet wash is useful, but it is not a simple storage hack. Treat it like a small shower: waterproof surfaces, splash protection, proper plumbing, shutoff access, drainage, and ventilation. Plumbing work usually triggers permits, and the cost can rise quickly if the drain line, water lines, or floor framing need changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors24. Convert an Underused Closet
A closet-to-mudroom conversion is one of the best mid-budget upgrades. Remove the doors, add a bench, hooks, wall protection, lighting, and shoe storage. In 2026, many closet-to-mudroom conversions fall around $1,500 to $4,500 depending on demolition, carpentry, flooring, trim, paint, and whether electrical changes are needed.
25. Combine Laundry and Mudroom Functions Carefully
A laundry room can make an excellent mudroom because it already handles utility work. The risk is congestion. Keep appliance doors, hampers, hanging rods, and the walking path clear. If you add countertops, cabinets, a sink, or new outlets, plan the layout around appliance service access and code requirements. Do not bury shutoffs, dryer vents, cleanouts, or electrical panels behind built-ins.
Mudroom Cost Guide for 2026
Mudroom costs vary widely because the word can mean anything from hooks and a bench to a full addition with foundation, roof, HVAC, plumbing, and custom cabinetry. A small storage refresh can be a weekend project. A new mudroom addition is a construction project.
| Project scope | Typical 2026 cost range | What usually drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hooks, rail, baskets, small shelves | $50-$300+ | Hardware quality, wall repair, paint, number of users |
| Wall panels, beadboard, paint, trim refresh | A few hundred dollars to $1,500+ | Material choice, moisture-resistant trim, labor, wall condition |
| Closet-to-mudroom conversion | $1,500-$4,500 | Demo, bench, flooring, lighting, finish carpentry |
| Simple built-in bench with cubbies | $500-$2,000 | Size, plywood vs stock components, paint, drawers, hardware |
| Custom locker and bench system | $1,250-$4,000+ | Length, doors, drawers, stain-grade material, custom finish |
| Small flooring replacement | A few hundred dollars to $3,000+ | Tile or LVP selection, subfloor prep, waterproofing, transitions |
| New mudroom addition | $6,500-$18,000 typical; around $12,000 average | Square footage, foundation, roof, structure, HVAC, finishes, permits |
| Premium/custom addition | $36,000+ | High-end cabinetry, plumbing, pet wash, complex structure, luxury finishes |
As a planning number, many mudroom additions fall around $100 to $300 per square foot. A conversion inside the existing footprint is usually far less expensive than adding square footage because you avoid foundation, roof, exterior wall, and major envelope work.
Custom carpentry is another major cost driver. Paint-grade built-ins with open hooks cost less than stain-grade lockers with inset doors, drawers, charging stations, and specialty hardware. Flooring can also swing the budget. A small LVP replacement may be relatively modest; porcelain tile with subfloor correction, waterproofing, grout sealing, and clean transitions can move into the thousands.
Best Materials for Mudroom Floors, Walls, and Cabinets
Flooring
Mudroom flooring should be selected for water, abrasion, salt, and slip resistance. Porcelain tile and ceramic tile are strong choices when installed over a properly prepared substrate. Choose a textured surface rather than a slick polished tile. Quality luxury vinyl plank can also perform well in mudrooms, especially when homeowners want a warmer feel and fewer grout lines.
Hardwood can work in nearby spaces, but it is risky at the wet entry itself unless the household is disciplined about mats and moisture. Low-grade laminate is usually a poor choice for wet, high-traffic entries because seams and cores can swell when water sits.
Walls and Trim
The lower wall is the danger zone. Wet boots, bags, mops, pet towels, and salt hit the first 12 to 24 inches repeatedly. Use washable paint at minimum, and upgrade to tile, PVC beadboard, composite trim, sealed shiplap, or other moisture-resistant panels where the room sees heavy use.

Moisture control is a construction issue, not just a design preference. Good practice is to control liquid water, reduce condensation risk, allow wet materials to dry, and use materials that can tolerate the exposure. That means caulked transitions, sealed edges, proper ventilation, and no raw wood or absorbent trim sitting directly where wet boots land.
Cabinets and Built-Ins
Paint-grade plywood, hardwood face frames, quality cabinet boxes, and durable enamel finishes are common for custom mudrooms. MDF can be useful for painted panels and trim in dry areas, but we avoid relying on it where wet shoes, mop water, or pet bowls will repeatedly hit the base. Raised cabinet legs, sealed toe kicks, PVC trim, or tile base details help protect the bottom edge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Permit, Electrical, and Safety Notes Homeowners Miss
A small mudroom storage upgrade usually does not need a building permit if you are only adding hooks, freestanding furniture, or surface-mounted shelves. But the room being small does not automatically make the work permit-free.
Permits may be required when the project includes new plumbing, new electrical circuits, outlet relocation, hardwired lighting, HVAC changes, structural wall changes, exterior door or window changes, foundation work, or a true addition. Local rules vary by city and county, so confirm requirements before work starts.
Electrical planning matters. Mudrooms often collect charging stations, robot vacuum docks, heated boot dryers, freezers, laundry appliances, and task lighting. Receptacles near sinks, laundry areas, garages, unfinished spaces, or damp locations may require GFCI protection. Do not hide junction boxes, panels, shutoffs, or appliance service areas behind permanent built-ins.
Safety also includes anchoring. Tall lockers, cabinets, and heavy hook rails should be fastened into studs or blocking. If the walls are open during a remodel, add backing exactly where hooks, benches, and upper cabinets will land. It is inexpensive then and frustrating later.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY is reasonable for many surface-level mudroom upgrades: installing a boot tray, adding a hook rail into studs, painting with washable paint, assembling freestanding benches, labeling bins, adding open shelves, or converting a simple closet with basic carpentry skills. A careful homeowner can often complete those projects in a weekend or two.
Hire a pro when the work affects structure, water, power, exterior openings, or complex built-ins. That includes moving walls, adding a mudroom addition, cutting a new exterior door, installing tile over a questionable subfloor, adding a sink or pet wash, moving outlets, adding hardwired lights, modifying HVAC, or building tall custom lockers that must fit tightly between walls and ceiling.

Common Mudroom Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest mistake is designing from inspiration photos instead of measuring real stuff. Count shoes, backpacks, coats, pet gear, sports bags, winter gear, reusable bags, and cleaning supplies. Then add overflow. Most households underestimate storage by 25 to 50 percent.
Another common mistake is using open cubbies everywhere. Open storage is fast, but it is visually busy. If the mudroom faces the kitchen, living room, or main hallway, include closed storage so the normal mess of family life can disappear behind doors or drawers.
Do not skip the wet zone. Without a boot tray, mat, tile landing, or washable floor surface at the door, water and salt travel into drywall, wood flooring, cabinets, and adjacent rooms. That is how a storage project becomes a repair project.

Watch hook height and spacing. Hooks that are too high for children will not be used. Hooks that are too close together cannot handle bulky coats and backpacks. Also check door swings, stairs, garage access, appliance doors, electrical panels, and laundry clearances before approving a built-in layout.
Finally, do not forget drying. Wet coats and shoes need airflow. If everything is sealed behind cabinet doors, add grille fronts, perforated panels, open backs, or air gaps.
A Practical Mudroom Plan for Most Families
For a typical family entry, a strong layout includes a washable landing at the door, one hook or locker zone per household member, a 16- to 20-inch-high bench, shoe storage below, closed cabinets for overflow, high shelves for seasonal bins, task lighting, and a small clean drop zone for keys and charging.
If space allows, add a utility cabinet and a ventilated shoe area. If pets are part of the household, include leash storage, towel hooks, and a washable paw zone. If the room connects to laundry, protect appliance clearances and plan outlets, plumbing, and ventilation before cabinetry is ordered.
The best mudroom is not the one with the most cubbies. It is the one that keeps the daily path clear, gives every item a home, handles water correctly, and still looks orderly after a normal Tuesday.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to build a mudroom in 2026?
A new mudroom addition commonly averages around $12,000, with many projects falling between $6,500 and $18,000 or about $100 to $300 per square foot. Premium custom additions can exceed $36,000. A closet-to-mudroom conversion is much less, often around $1,500 to $4,500.
Do I need a permit to add or remodel a mudroom?
You may not need a permit for simple hooks, shelves, paint, or freestanding furniture. Permits are commonly required when work includes plumbing, electrical changes, HVAC changes, structural framing, exterior doors or windows, foundation work, or a new addition. Check local rules before starting.
What is the best flooring for a mudroom?
Porcelain tile, ceramic tile, textured tile, and quality luxury vinyl plank are common durable choices. The floor should resist water, abrasion, salt, and slipping. Hardwood and low-grade laminate are riskier at wet entries because standing water can damage them.
How deep should a mudroom bench be?
Most mudroom benches work well at 16 to 20 inches high and 15 to 18 inches deep. Leave about 36 inches of clear space in front when possible so people can sit, open drawers, and move through the room comfortably.
Are open cubbies or closed cabinets better for a mudroom?
A mix is usually best. Open hooks and cubbies are faster for daily coats and backpacks. Closed cabinets and drawers hide shoes, sports gear, pet supplies, mail, and seasonal overflow, which matters when the mudroom is visible from a kitchen, hallway, or living area.
Can I turn a closet or laundry room into a mudroom?
Yes. Closets and laundry rooms often make excellent mudrooms if they are near the entry your family actually uses. Plan for clear walking space, shoe storage, hooks, washable wall protection, lighting, and appliance or door clearances. Electrical, plumbing, or structural changes may require a pro.
