The City of Canning has ended scheduled verge collections for bulk household junk and now asks eligible residential addresses to book a skip bin instead. The change applies to general bulky waste—not garden organics, which still has two scheduled verge collections each year.
How the on-demand skip service works
Eligible residential addresses can book two free skip-bin services per financial year. Book a suitable date online, call Veolia Environmental Services, or visit the City’s administration building. Daily allocations are limited and offered first come, first served; the City says bookings can be made up to 11 months ahead. Check the City’s current service information for eligibility and booking details.

Skips generally remain on the verge for two evenings and one full day. Delivery and collection days vary according to the booked day, and the booking portal may show operational time windows. Follow the confirmed details for your booking rather than assuming a standard delivery or pickup time.
Where the skip can go and how much it holds
The City’s approximate skip dimensions are 1.8 metres long, 1.65 metres wide and 1.2 metres high, with capacity of at least 3 cubic metres. It is generally placed on the verge belonging to the booked address. The City does not allow placement on private property. If there is not enough verge space, contact Veolia for an assessment; driveway placement is considered only in that circumstance and after a waiver is completed.

Residents who cannot load a skip should call the City’s customer service line to discuss their circumstances. People living in apartments or multi-unit dwellings need an individual assessment and may need to coordinate with their strata body.
What can go in the skip
The service is for bulky household junk. The City lists items such as furniture, timber, sports equipment, some floor coverings, general bulky junk and empty, degassed hot-water systems as accepted. Do not load waste above the fill line.
The City excludes asbestos, building materials, e-waste, green waste, food, hazardous waste, liquids, mattresses, white goods, tyres and oversized items that exceed the fill line. Check the City’s current accepted and prohibited materials before loading; some excluded items have separate collection or disposal options.

Bulk junk is only one waste stream. The City’s on-demand services page lists other municipal options, including routes for items such as mattresses, white goods, e-waste and hazardous waste. Check the relevant service conditions rather than putting excluded material into the skip.

Garden-organics verge collections continue
The change does not end all verge collections. The City still schedules two bulk garden-organics collections a year. For a scheduled collection, place material out by 6am on the Monday of the collection week and no more than seven days before that date. Dates and preparation guidance are on the City’s Verge Collections page.
Why the City made the change
When PerthNow reported the transition on 17 August 2023, it described the City’s stated aims as giving households more control over timing, keeping streets tidier and reducing costs. The report also attributed a 20 per cent increase in rubbish piles over the preceding two years to City staff; the measurement method was not established in the report. These were reported expectations and context for the policy change, not evidence of measured results from the on-demand service.
