Circular-Saw-Blade Basics: Choose the Right Blade for Your Saw and Cut

Choose a circular-saw blade by confirming diameter and arbor fit first, then match tooth design and kerf to the material, cut, and finish you need.

Choose a circular-saw blade by checking fit first, then matching the blade’s teeth and design to the material and cut. Diameter, arbor size and shape, and the saw maker’s mounting requirements must match your saw; tooth count and kerf then help determine cutting speed, finish, and motor load.

Which circular saw blade should I use?

Start with the saw manual, not a tooth-count rule of thumb. Confirm the permitted blade diameter, arbor size and shape, blade type, and operating limits. Then choose a blade designed for the material and the cut you need: ripping follows the grain, while crosscutting goes across it. A blade that removes material quickly during a rip may leave a rougher edge on a crosscut or sheet good.

WOOD magazine notes that 6-1/2-inch and 7-1/4-inch blades are typical for handheld circular saws, but these are common examples, not permission to change the size on a particular saw. DEWALT advises using only the blade size specified in the saw’s user manual; changing sizes can create safety and warranty concerns. WOOD magazine’s blade guide and DEWALT’s support guidance explain these fit considerations.

Match the blade to the material and cut

  • Fast, rough ripping: A lower-tooth-count blade is commonly used to clear material quickly when cutting with the grain.
  • General work: A middle-range tooth count can balance speed and finish across common tasks, but the best choice depends on the material and cut.
  • Cleaner crosscuts or sheet goods: More teeth can produce a finer cut; tooth geometry also affects tear-out. For veneered plywood, a blade designed to control tear-out is preferable to a rough-ripping blade.

For wood, alternate-top-bevel (ATB) teeth are commonly used for crosscuts and plywood; flat-top teeth are suited to ripping. Triple-chip designs are used for some hard-surface and coated materials. These designs serve different purposes, so choose according to the blade maker’s stated application rather than assuming one tooth pattern suits every job. WOOD magazine describes these geometries in its circular-saw blade guide.

Use tooth-count figures as examples, not universal rules

Woodworking recommendations vary with the cut and the blade. WOOD magazine’s 2025 guide gives portable-saw examples of 10–12 teeth for ripping, 40 for crosscutting, and 60 for veneered plywood. A separate 2024 WOOD article recommends 24 teeth for ripping solid wood, 40 for general work, and 50–60 for cleaner crosscuts. These are published selection examples, not specifications for every saw or material. Consult the blade and saw manuals for your setup. WOOD’s 2025 guide and its 2024 cutting guide provide the recommendations.

Will this blade fit my circular saw?

Check every compatibility detail against the saw manual before installation. Diameter alone is not enough: the arbor must match, and the saw may specify blade type or mounting requirements. Do not assume that a blade with a familiar diameter is safe to use just because it can be attached.

  1. Find the saw’s permitted blade diameter in the manual or on the manufacturer’s specification label.
  2. Match the arbor diameter and shape. The blade’s center hole must fit the saw’s spindle as specified; do not improvise an adapter or mounting arrangement unless the saw maker allows it.
  3. Check blade type and operating limits against the saw manual and blade markings, including the manufacturer’s stated maximum speed where applicable.
  4. Confirm the blade is intended for the material and cut you plan to make, then install it as directed by the saw maker.

For example, Makita lists its D-67022 as a 6-1/2-inch, 24-tooth carbide-tipped blade with a 5/8-inch arbor, intended for compatible 6-1/2-inch cordless circular saws and wood applications including framing lumber, plywood, OSB, and engineered lumber. Its D-67038 is a 6-1/2-inch, 40-tooth carbide-tipped blade with a 5/8-inch arbor, described for fine-finish cutting with compatible 6-1/2-inch cordless saws. Neither example establishes compatibility with every saw of that diameter. See Makita’s pages for the D-67022 and D-67038.

What does kerf mean?

Kerf is the width of the cut made by the blade. A thin-kerf blade removes less material and can reduce motor strain, which may be useful on portable or cordless saws. A thicker blade is generally less prone to flexing, so kerf is a trade-off between cutting load and material removal on one hand, and blade stability on the other. The saw must still be compatible with the blade.

WOOD magazine also describes hook angle as a factor in blade choice; 5° to 0° is a typical range for portable circular saws in its guidance. Follow the saw and blade makers’ recommendations rather than treating that range as a universal requirement. Makita’s D-67022 and D-67038 product pages list kerfs of .076 and .078 inches, respectively; those are specifications for those products, not general targets for all blades. WOOD’s guide, the D-67022 listing, and the D-67038 listing provide these details.

How should I use and maintain a circular-saw blade safely?

A circular saw can cause blade-contact injuries, kickback, and injuries from flying particles. OSHA’s U.S. workplace guidance describes kickback as the blade catching the stock and throwing it toward the operator; it notes that the risk is greater during ripping than crosscutting. Keep hands out of the cut line, use the correct blade for the material and cutting action, and follow the saw maker’s operating instructions.

  • High-Performance TiCo Hi-Density Carbide Teeth - Designed for smooth crosscuts in hardwood, softwood, and plywood, delivering a perfect combination of cutting speed and long-lasting durability.
  • Perma-SHIELD Non-Stick Coating - Protects the blade from heat, gumming, and corrosion, ensuring superior cutting performance and extended blade life.
  • Super Thin Laser-Cut Kerf - Provides fast, clean cuts with minimal material loss, optimizing cutting efficiency and delivering a smoother finish.
  • Tri-Metal Shock-Resistant Brazing - Provides maximum durability by allowing the carbide tips to withstand extreme impact, ensuring precision and long life.
  • Hardened Steel Body - Enhances the blade's longevity and maintains a sharp cutting edge, making it ideal for both rip and crosscuts in wood and plywood.
  • Use a sharp, maintained blade suited to the material; remove a cracked blade from service.
  • Operate at the speed specified by the manufacturer and leave sufficient clearance for the blade and workpiece.
  • Keep the saw’s guards in place and functioning. OSHA’s cited U.S. requirements address upper and lower guards on covered portable saws; the lower guard must return automatically and instantly when the saw is withdrawn from the work.
  • Wear eye and face protection appropriate to the task, and keep hands out of the line of the cut.

These OSHA resources apply to the U.S. contexts they describe and are not legal advice for other jurisdictions: OSHA’s handheld circular-saw guidance, 29 CFR 1910.243, and OSHA’s handheld-saw machine-guarding guidance.
