Ohm’s law connects voltage, current, and resistance: V = I × R. In circuit wiring, it lets you calculate load current, the resistance added by cable and connections, voltage drop, and heat-producing power. It is essential for understanding low-voltage circuits, but it is not, by itself, a safe wire-sizing or electrical-code method.

What Ohm’s law tells you about wiring

Voltage is the potential difference between two points, current is the flow of charge through a circuit, and resistance opposes that current. For a resistor under stated operating conditions, their relationship is:

V = I × R

In a practical wired loop, resistance includes the load, both conductors, terminals, switches, fuses, and other connections. At the same source voltage, more resistance means less current. Current through unwanted wire or connection resistance creates a voltage drop and dissipates heat.

Ohm’s law is most direct for battery-powered DC and resistive loads. Motors, batteries, lamps, semiconductors, thermistors, switching supplies, and other devices can change resistance with temperature, voltage, frequency, or operating state.

The electrical quantities and formulas

Quantity Symbol Unit Useful relationship
Voltage V (or E) volts (V) V = I × R
Current I amperes (A) I = V ÷ R
Resistance R ohms (Ω) R = V ÷ I
Power P watts (W) P = V × I

Power can also be calculated as P = I²R or P = V²/R. These forms show why a loose terminal or undersized conductor can become hot. Keep units consistent: 1 kΩ = 1,000 Ω, 1 mA = 0.001 A, and 1 kW = 1,000 W.

For example, 3.3 kΩ at 20 mA gives 3,300 Ω × 0.020 A = 66 V. The arithmetic is valid only if the device actually behaves like the assumed resistance at that operating point.

Applying Ohm’s law step by step

  1. List the known voltage, current, resistance, or power.
  2. Convert units before substituting values.
  3. Rearrange the equation to isolate the unknown.
  4. Calculate power when a component, wire, or connection could heat.
  5. Check whether the result is plausible and compare it with source, component, conductor, and protection ratings.

Find current

A 12 V source feeding a 6 Ω load draws I = 12 ÷ 6 = 2 A.

Find resistance

A circuit carrying 6 A at 24 V has R = 24 ÷ 6 = 4 Ω.

Find voltage

Five amperes through 8 Ω produces V = 5 × 8 = 40 V.

Estimate current from power

A 100 W resistive load on 230 V draws approximately I = 100 ÷ 230 = 0.43 A. For motors, transformers, LED drivers, and switching supplies, starting current, efficiency, waveform, and power factor can make P ÷ V incomplete.

A worked 12 V wiring example

12 V source ── outgoing conductor ── load ── return conductor ── source

Suppose a 12 V, 6 Ω load is connected with a cable whose two-conductor loop resistance is 0.20 Ω. The total resistance is 6.20 Ω, so the operating current is approximately 12 ÷ 6.20 = 1.94 A. The cable drop is 1.94 × 0.20 = 0.39 V, leaving about 11.61 V at the load. Cable heating is I²R = 1.94² × 0.20 ≈ 0.75 W; the load dissipates about 11.61 × 1.94 ≈ 22.5 W.

This illustrates why low-voltage systems are sensitive to cable resistance: 0.39 V is about 3.3% of 12 V, while the same absolute drop is a much smaller proportion of a 120 V system.

How wire construction changes resistance

  • Length: A longer conductor has more resistance.
  • Cross-sectional area: A larger conductor has less resistance than a smaller conductor of the same material and length.
  • Material: Copper and aluminum have different resistivities.
  • Temperature: Conductor resistance generally rises as temperature increases; published values use specified reference conditions.
  • Connections: Corrosion, loose screws, damaged strands, poor crimps, and contaminated contacts add series resistance.

The electrical path normally includes the outgoing and returning conductors:

Rwire,total = Routgoing + Rreturn + Rconnections

Resistance factors are explained by Fluke’s resistance reference. A 100-foot one-way run is approximately a 200-foot circuit path when the return conductor is the same length. Using Engineering ToolBox’s illustrative value of 1.02 Ω per 1,000 feet for #10 copper, 200 feet has 0.204 Ω; at 10 A, the drop is 2.04 V. This is an example, not a universal wire-sizing rule; material, temperature, installation, and AC or DC conditions change the result.

Calculating voltage drop

Use Vdrop = I × Rwire. If resistance is given per unit length, multiply by the complete circuit length, not just the one-way distance:

Rwire = resistance per length × total circuit length

Then calculate load voltage:

Vload = Vsource − Vdrop

Express the result proportionally with percentage drop = (Vdrop ÷ Vsource) × 100. Excessive drop can cause dim lamps, relay malfunction, motor-starting trouble, inaccurate sensors, reduced heater output, or unstable electronics. See the calculation context at Engineering ToolBox and Fluke’s voltage-drop troubleshooting guide.

Ways to reduce drop

  • Use a larger conductor or shorten the circuit path.
  • Reduce operating current or, where the design permits, use a higher system voltage.
  • Repair corroded, loose, or damaged connections.
  • Recalculate at actual operating current and conductor temperature.
  • Use parallel conductors only when the applicable design rules allow and require matched installation.

A larger fuse does not fix voltage drop. A fuse protects against excessive current; increasing its rating can leave undersized conductors dangerously unprotected.

Series and parallel wiring

Series circuits

Source ── R1 ── R2 ── return
  • The same current flows through every component.
  • Voltage drops add to the source voltage.
  • Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3.
  • An open component or connection interrupts the entire path.

For two resistors, voltage division is V1 = Vsource × R1 ÷ (R1 + R2). With 4 Ω and 8 Ω across 12 V, total resistance is 12 Ω, current is 1 A, and drops are 4 V and 8 V.

Parallel circuits

             ┌── R1 ──┐
Source ──────┤ ├──── return
             └── R2 ──┘
  • Each branch connects to the same two nodes, so branch voltage is nominally equal.
  • Itotal = I1 + I2 + I3.
  • 1 ÷ Rtotal = 1 ÷ R1 + 1 ÷ R2 + 1 ÷ R3.
  • For two resistors, Rtotal = R1R2 ÷ (R1 + R2).

Two 12 Ω branches across 12 V each draw 1 A, so the source supplies 2 A and the equivalent resistance is 6 Ω. Parallel loads do not necessarily share current equally; each branch draws according to its own resistance or load behavior.

Testing wiring with a multimeter

Voltage and voltage-drop tests

  1. Select the correct AC or DC voltage function and range.
  2. Place probes across the source, load, or section under test.
  3. Compare the reading with the expected value.
  4. For a drop test, measure directly across the suspected wire, fuse, switch, terminal, or connector while the circuit is operating under load.

A high reading across one connection identifies unwanted resistance in that section. A wire can pass a low-current continuity test yet fail when loaded.

Resistance tests

  1. De-energize the circuit and isolate the component as needed.
  2. Discharge stored energy and verify that no external voltage remains.
  3. Place probes across the component or conductor.
  4. Compare the reading with the expected operating condition.

Never measure resistance on an energized circuit. An ohmmeter supplies its own test voltage; external voltage can damage the meter and invalidate the reading. See Fluke’s measurement guidance.

Current tests

  1. Confirm the meter, leads, fuse, and category rating suit the circuit.
  2. Move the lead to the correct current terminal.
  3. Open the circuit and insert the meter in series.
  4. Start on the highest appropriate range.
  5. Never place an ammeter directly across a source; in current mode that can create a short circuit.

Follow the meter manufacturer’s instructions. Beginners should restrict practice to battery-powered or current-limited circuits and avoid live mains work unless qualified.

Why Ohm’s law is not a complete wire-sizing method

Ohm’s law helps estimate load current and voltage drop, but safe conductor selection also requires:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Allowable ampacity under the applicable conditions.
  • Overcurrent protection that protects the conductor.
  • Insulation temperature and voltage rating.
  • Conduit fill, bundling, ambient heat, moisture, chemicals, sunlight, burial, vibration, and mechanical protection.
  • Terminal and connector ratings, flexibility, bend radius, and strain relief.
  • Applicable electrical code, standard, local amendments, and inspection requirements.

Do not apply a single “maximum voltage-drop percentage” universally; any target must come from the relevant code, standard, manufacturer, or design specification. Building and industrial wiring should be designed or checked by a qualified professional.

Loads that need more than a fixed resistance

  • AC inductive or capacitive circuits: Use impedance, which includes resistance and reactance, plus phase and power factor.
  • Motors: Starting current can be several times running current; running watts divided by volts is not sufficient for every decision.
  • LEDs: Use a current-limiting resistor or suitable driver rather than connecting an LED directly to a voltage source.
  • Batteries: Internal resistance causes terminal voltage to fall under load.
  • Incandescent lamps, thermistors, and semiconductors: Resistance changes with temperature or operating point.
  • High-current systems: Connection heating and heat dissipation can dominate the nominal cable resistance.

Troubleshooting symptoms and likely causes

Symptom Likely electrical explanation Useful check
Load is dim or weak Excessive cable or connection voltage drop Measure voltage at the source and at the loaded device; then test each section for drop.
Connector or terminal is hot Added contact resistance; heat follows P = I²R Measure drop directly across the connection under load; inspect and repair the termination.
No current Open switch, fuse, conductor, or connection Check voltage on both sides of the suspected open; absence of current does not prove absence of voltage.
Fuse or breaker trips immediately Short circuit or load current beyond the protection rating De-energize, inspect for shorts, and never increase the fuse rating to stop nuisance trips.
Continuity is good but the device fails High-resistance splice or terminal that fails only under load Perform a loaded voltage-drop test rather than relying on continuity alone.

Safety boundaries

Low voltage reduces some shock risk but does not eliminate battery short-circuit current, arcs, burns, fire, stored energy, or equipment damage. Use insulated tools, correct fusing, sound leads, and appropriate personal protection. Treat unknown or building wiring as energized until verified otherwise. Household and industrial mains work requires the relevant qualification, isolation procedure, test equipment, and local code compliance. OSHA’s Electrical Hazards in Construction workbook provides basic hazard guidance.

Quick-reference checklist

  • Identify whether the circuit is DC, resistive AC, or a reactive/nonlinear load.
  • Use V = IR and consistent units.
  • Include both outgoing and return conductors in loop resistance.
  • Calculate voltage drop and power, not current alone.
  • Test voltage across a section while loaded to find bad connections.
  • De-energize and isolate circuits before resistance testing.
  • Keep the meter in series for current measurements and never across a source.
  • Use ampacity, protection, environmental ratings, terminations, and code—not Ohm’s law alone—for wire selection.
