Measure from your usual seated eye position to the screen, then compare two starting points: divide that distance in inches by 1.6 for a comfortable mixed-use size, or by 1.2 for a more cinematic size. Choose the nearest standard screen that also fits the room, seating, lighting, and viewing height. These formulas assume a 16:9 television; they guide the decision, not dictate it.

How to calculate your starting TV size

  1. Measure the viewing distance. Sit in the seat you use most and measure from your eyes to the plane of the screen. Do not measure from the back wall or the sofa’s rear edge.
  2. Convert feet to inches. Multiply the distance in feet by 12.
  3. Calculate a mixed-use target. Divide the distance in inches by 1.6 for an approximately 30-degree horizontal viewing angle.
  4. Calculate a cinema target. Divide the distance in inches by 1.2 for an approximately 40-degree horizontal viewing angle. A THX-style approximation is distance in inches multiplied by 0.835.
  5. Compare nearby standard sizes. If your result falls between sizes, compare the nearest options rather than treating the calculation as exact.
  6. Check the room and test the scale. Mark the proposed screen outline on the wall with painter’s tape or cardboard before ordering.

RTINGS describes about 30 degrees as a mixed-use baseline and about 40 degrees as a more immersive cinema target; its roughly 62-degree figure is an upper boundary for extreme immersion, not a typical recommendation. These are viewing-angle targets, not universal laws. THX cinema-placement guidance references 36 degrees from the farthest seat, a closely related cinema-oriented target framed differently. RTINGS sizing guidance and THX screen-placement guidance explain their respective approaches.

TV size by viewing distance

The figures below are calculated from the 30- and 40-degree targets. Practical sizes are nearby options to compare, not a promise that every size is available in every model or market.

Eye-to-screen distance Mixed use, about 30° Cinema, about 40° Sizes to compare
6 ft / 72 in 45 in 60 in 55 or 65 in
7 ft / 84 in 52.5 in 70 in 55, 65, or 75 in
8 ft / 96 in 60 in 80 in 65, 77, 83, or 98 in
9 ft / 108 in 67.5 in 90 in 75, 85, or 98 in
10 ft / 120 in 75 in 100 in 85 or 98 in, or a projector
11 ft / 132 in 82.5 in 110 in 98 or 100 in, or a projector
12 ft / 144 in 90 in 120 in 98 or 115 in, or a projector
14 ft / 168 in 105 in 140 in 115 in or a projector

For example, at 8 feet, a 65-inch set is a reasonable mixed-use choice, while 77 or 83 inches moves closer to a cinema presentation. A 98-inch display is an especially immersive option only if the seating, wall, and budget support it. The distance-based guidance is consistent with LG’s current U.S. sizing guide and THX room-size guidance.

Choose the viewing angle that suits your room

Mixed-use living room

Start near 30 degrees if the screen will serve news, general television, sports, movies, and games, or if household members prefer a relaxed view. Compare the next larger size if you want more immersion and the seating distance and wall allow it.

Dedicated movie room

Start near 36–40 degrees if the main goal is a theater-like view from a central seat. Move down a size if the screen feels overwhelming, the front row is much closer than the primary seat, or you find subtitles and fast action tiring to follow.

Sports and shared viewing

A larger picture can make scoreboards easier to read and help a group follow the action. But check brightness, reflections, motion handling, and visibility from side seats: a smaller, brighter screen with better off-axis performance may work better than a larger display that is difficult to see across the room.

Gaming

  • Story-driven games: A larger image can add immersion when you sit far enough away to scan the whole screen comfortably.
  • Couch multiplayer: Size the picture for the farthest players and check whether the interface remains readable from each seat.
  • Competitive gaming: A moderate screen may make the full interface easier to scan and reduce eye travel.
  • PC-style desktop use: Measure from the desk’s normal seated eye position; living-room distance rules may not suit close desktop viewing.

Account for resolution and the content you actually watch

Higher pixel density on modern 4K televisions generally makes close viewing of a larger screen more practical than on older 1080p displays. It does not make every size comfortable at every distance. Low-bitrate streams, broadcast television, DVDs, and weak upscaling can look softer or reveal compression more clearly when enlarged. Subtitles, news crawls, and gaming interfaces also need to remain comfortable to scan. Picture quality depends on source material and viewing conditions as well as resolution, as RTINGS notes in its size guidance.

Diagonal size is a convenient way to compare televisions, but it does not describe every viewing experience. Many films are wider than 16:9 and appear with black bars, so their active image is shorter than the full screen. Dedicated cinema rooms may need to consider image height and scope-screen composition in addition to diagonal size.

Use room type as a check, not a sizing formula

Room labels can help frame the choice, but eye-to-screen distance is the more useful starting measurement.

  • Large living room: Compare 75–85 inches where the distance and layout support it.
  • Media room or dedicated theater: A 98–115-inch television or projector may suit longer distances and a cinema-focused setup, provided installation and seating geometry work.
  • 120 inches and above: Usually a projector-oriented decision, although very-large direct-view televisions exist.

These are practical categories, not formal standards. Ultra-large direct-view televisions are now part of manufacturer lineups; availability and exact sizes vary. LG’s current guide discusses its ultra-large offerings.

Check seating, sightlines, and installation before buying

Measure every important seat

For a sectional or theater with multiple rows, calculate the primary viewing position, then check the nearest and farthest seats. A screen that suits the main row may feel too large up close or too small in the back. Side seats add a separate concern: off-axis picture quality varies by model and panel. OLED sets generally maintain strong viewing angles, while some LCD/LED models lose contrast or color from the side, but performance is model-specific.

Plan the wall and the route into the room

Measure usable wall width and height, cabinet or stand dimensions, and clearance for speakers, doors, walkways, shelves, and windows. Do not assume the entire wall is available for the screen. Before committing to an unusually large television, check doorways, stairwells, elevators, turns, and the delivery route; the box may be harder to move than the installed set.

Keep the screen at a comfortable height

Plan for the seated line of sight to fall roughly near the center of the display. A high mounting position can force viewers to tilt their heads, and a large screen can make that problem more pronounced. Fireplace locations often create this trade-off. THX advises aligning the line of sight approximately with screen center and cautions against elevating the set. THX’s FAQ covers viewing position.

Mock up the screen outline before drilling. Include the space needed for a soundbar or center speaker, and verify power, cable routes, ventilation, wall construction, VESA compatibility, and mount weight rating against the television’s official manual.

Check light and reflections

Look at the screen location at the times you normally watch. Window glare and room lighting can wash out the picture; a brighter model or better glare control may matter more than adding inches. Actual brightness and screen finish vary by model, so do not choose solely by panel category.

When a projector may be a better fit

Consider a projector when you want an image around 100 inches or larger, have a room that can be darkened, want a retractable or hidden screen, and are prepared to plan the installation. Projectors require attention to throw distance, screen material, ambient light, audio, and projector placement; recommendations vary by screen size and projection technology. Sony’s projector distance guidance illustrates why TV formulas do not transfer directly.

A large television is generally the simpler choice for bright-room viewing, everyday instant-on use, and a straightforward installation. Whether a projector is preferable depends on the room and equipment, not a universal price advantage. Very large televisions in the 98–115-inch range also make the comparison relevant for rooms that once had fewer direct-view options.

Common sizing mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by room dimensions alone: Measure eye-to-screen distance; a large room does not automatically need a huge screen.
  • Measuring from the sofa’s back edge: Use the normal seated eye position instead.
  • Treating the formula as an exact answer: Compare nearby sizes and judge comfort, content, and room fit.
  • Buying the biggest size the budget allows: A larger display is not a win if it compromises picture quality, viewing comfort, seating, or installation.
  • Mounting too high: Screen size does not justify a poor line of sight.
  • Ignoring side seats, windows, or speakers: Check off-axis image quality, reflections, and audio placement before selecting the wall position.
  • Assuming 4K fixes poor sources: Large screens can make compression, low resolution, and weak upscaling more apparent.
  • Buying a projector without a light-control plan: Ambient light, screen choice, throw distance, and audio all affect the result.

Final fit check

  • Measured from seated eye position to screen plane.
  • Calculated both the mixed-use and cinema targets.
  • Checked the primary, closest, farthest, and side seats.
  • Measured usable wall space, furniture, speaker clearance, and delivery route.
  • Considered mounting height, lighting, reflections, and source quality.
  • Matched size to movies, sports, gaming, or mixed household viewing.
  • Mocked up the screen or tested a comparable size from the intended distance.
