Start with what the room needs the window covering to do, then compare slat blinds, cellular shades, and other styles against the window and the product’s specifications. No one type is best for every room, and energy performance depends on the product, window, climate, and how you use it.
How to choose blinds for a window
- Set the priorities. Decide how much daylight, privacy, outside view, and glare control the room needs. The U.S. Department of Energy also recommends weighing cost, appearance, durability, maintenance, sound control, thermal comfort, and fading when selecting window coverings. DOE window purchasing guidance explains how using interior shades and blinds can help manage unwanted solar heat gain and daylight.
- Match the style to the window and how it will be used. Consider window or door geometry, coverage, and how you want to operate the covering. Horizontal slats, cellular shades, and vertical blinds work differently; compare actual product details rather than assuming a style will suit every opening.
- Check safety before choosing an operating system. If young children are present, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends cordless window coverings as the safest option.
- Check fit and installation requirements. Decide between inside and outside mounting only after checking the frame and the chosen product’s current measuring and installation instructions. Required clearances and tolerances vary by product.
- Evaluate energy claims at the product level. A covering may help manage sunlight and heat, but its effect depends on the window, product, climate, and use. Look for current, product-specific performance information rather than inferring savings from the covering type alone.
Common types of blinds and shades
Horizontal slat blinds
Horizontal blinds have adjustable slats that can be tilted to change light and view. DOE distinguishes metal or vinyl blinds from wood or faux-wood blinds in its report on U.S. window coverings. When comparing them, check slat width and tilt range, material, cleaning needs, moisture exposure, lift and tilt operation, and whether a cordless version is available. The sources do not establish a universally best material for any particular room.
Cellular shades
Cellular shades are pleated coverings. Insulated versions have one or more air layers in a honeycomb-shaped cross-section, which makes them worth comparing when thermal comfort is a priority. Construction alone does not guarantee a specific energy saving: compare the product’s fit, light-filtering or room-darkening options, operating system, and any current rated performance information.
Vertical blinds and other shade types
Vertical blinds and other window coverings may suit openings whose shape or coverage needs differ from those of a typical window. Compare the geometry of the window or door, coverage, light and privacy needs, operation, and safety design. Do not assume that every product in a style offers the same features or performance.

Why cordless operation matters in homes with young children
CPSC says, “The safest option when young children are present is to go cordless.” Its consumer guidance identifies cordless coverings as the option that eliminates the strangulation hazard; retrofit measures can reduce the hazard but do not eliminate it. Read CPSC’s window-covering cord safety guidance and follow current product instructions.
CPSC’s cord-hazard page also summarizes a historical review of 79 in-depth investigation reports by CPSC staff and the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA). The review, initiated in 2002 and distributed in 2004, found that 60% of incidents involved cord systems typically used in horizontal blinds, 40% involved continuous-loop systems typically used in vertical blinds and draperies, and 82% involved older products that did not conform to the voluntary standard. These figures describe the reviewed cases, not the current market or the probability of harm from a particular product. See CPSC’s window blind cord information for safety guidance.

For businesses and product makers, CPSC’s 15(j) rule guidance for window coverings describes its determination concerning certain nonconforming coverings and provisions of ANSI/WCMA A100.1—2018. Rules and standards can change; consult current CPSC guidance for applicable requirements rather than treating a summary of an earlier standard as current legal advice.
What energy ratings can—and cannot—tell you
DOE describes interior coverings as tools for managing solar heat gain and daylight, but the result depends on the window, product, climate, and how the covering is operated. The DOE’s 2018 article on the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) described rating standards at that time for blinds, cellular shades, storm windows and panels, pleated shades, roller shades, and solar screens. Categories and certifications may change, so check the current AERC program information and the specific product’s certification before relying on a rating. A rating is more useful for comparing documented product performance than a general claim about an entire type of covering. See DOE’s 2018 description of the AERC program.

How to measure and plan the installation
Blinds can only perform as intended if they fit the opening and are installed as directed. The sources cited here do not establish a universal measuring tolerance or determine whether an inside or outside mount will work for every frame. Before ordering, use the selected manufacturer’s current measurement guide to confirm dimensions, mounting depth, required clearances, and installation steps. For unusual openings or a custom installation, verify the plan with the product maker or installer.

DOE’s 2013 report, Residential Windows and Window Coverings: A Detailed View of the Installed Base and User Behavior, found that 73% of surveyed window coverings had a light outward-facing shade, 19% a medium shade, and 8% a dark shade. In that survey, metal or vinyl horizontal blinds had the highest share of light shades, at 82.7%. These are historical survey findings, not current market shares or a guide to which shade color will work best in a particular room.

- Important measuring notes - The window blind listed measures 34 inches wide. If you choose to inside mount, and your window frame size is between 34.375 to 35 in. wide this faux wood blind is recommended. A wider window and there will be more of a light gap, a more narrow window and the faux blind will likely not fit; in these cases please look at our other size options. Please view more detailed measuring instructions for inside or outside mounting within the product images section.
- Stylish decorative valance - These attractive 2-inch faux wood blinds include a matching 3-1/4 inch tall crown valance with side-covers that cover corners and hardware neatly. This elegant valance adds visual appeal and a trim, polished appearance to any window or door, without the need for extra blinds & shades accessories. For door blinds, your hardware will include hold-down brackets which allow the bottom of your blind to attach to the bottom of your door to prevent movement if you choose.
- Long lasting durability - The high-quality, smooth, 2-inch white faux wood blind slats are made of PVC for a durable, smooth finish that is moisture resistant making these excellent blinds for indoor windows throughout your home. Unlike natural wooden blinds, this engineered faux wood prevents warping, peeling, or staining, even in high humidity or exposure to sunlight. These window blinds are easy to clean with a cloth, feather duster, or vacuum with a soft brush attachment.
- Safe & convenient with cordless lift design - The cordless design is safe for homes with children and pets. These cordless blinds are certified “Best for Kids!” - complying with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) window covering safety standards for blinds & shades. Adjusting the blinds' slat position is easy with the cordless wand tilt control. Simply turn the wand for privacy, room darkening, and light control.
- The perfect fit made easy - Installation off your window blinds is easy with all necessary hardware and simple instructions included. For an outside mount, we recommend adding 2-6 inches to your window's height and width for light control and privacy. If you aren’t sure about the size or color, we recommend ordering one item as a test to reduce potential return expenses. In addition we are happy to answer any questions to help you feel confident in your choice.
