Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose an abrasive by starting with the workpiece and the task—not the grit number. Identify the material, decide whether you need to cut, grind, sand, blend, or finish, set a removal and surface-quality target, then match the abrasive format to a compatible machine. Grit, grain, product shape, and operating conditions all matter; no single abrasive is right for every job.
How to choose an abrasive
- Identify the material. Separate ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, wood, coatings and fillers, and other non-metallic materials. Hardness and grindability influence which abrasive is a sensible starting point.
- Define the operation. Cutting, grinding, stock removal, sanding, weld blending, deburring, and final finishing require different products and formats.
- Set the removal and finish target. Decide how much material must come off and how smooth or accurate the finished surface needs to be.
- Match the format to the machine. Check the product’s intended operation, dimensions, mounting, speed rating, and guard requirements against the tool instructions and abrasive packaging.
- Account for process conditions. For grinding wheels, consider operation severity, contact area, wheel speed, coolant, and machine power, as well as the material and required finish.
- Compare suitable candidates fairly. Use a controlled comparison appropriate to the job rather than assuming a higher price or a particular grit means better performance.
Norton’s welding and metal fabrication guide emphasizes matching the operation, abrasive product, and machine. Its application guidance is a starting point, not a universal specification for every material or setup.
Choose the abrasive grain for the material
Abrasive grains differ in how they suit materials and applications. Norton’s UK guidance describes alumina-type abrasives as suitable for high-tensile steel and ferritic cast iron, while silicon carbide is used for low-tensile materials and non-metallic materials. Treat these as initial guidance: the correct choice still depends on the specific workpiece, operation, product, and machine.
For a particular product, consult its manufacturer catalog and packaging instead of choosing by a general grain rule alone. Material names can cover different grades and conditions, and the same workpiece may call for a different abrasive when the operation changes.

See Norton’s grinding-wheel material guidance for its grain recommendations.
Pick a product format for the operation
Abrasive products are not interchangeable just because they fit a tool or look similar. Norton’s metal fabrication application guide associates cut-off wheels with cutting, depressed-center wheels with grinding, and flap, fiber, or cloth discs with blending or finishing applications. Select a product labeled for the task and confirm that the tool is designed to use it.
- Cutting: Use a cut-off product specified for cutting and compatible with the machine.
- Grinding and stock removal: Choose a grinding product specified for that operation; a grinding wheel and a cut-off wheel serve different purposes.
- Blending and finishing metal: Flap, fiber, or cloth products may suit these jobs when the product and tool specifications match.
- Sanding wood, coatings, or filler: Choose sandpaper or another sanding abrasive suited to the substrate and the sanding tool. Confirm the backing, attachment, and intended use.
Norton’s application guide lists product formats by fabrication task. For any wheel or disc, check machine speed, size, mounting, and guard requirements in the current product and tool instructions before use.

Choose grade and grit for removal and finish
On sandpaper, a lower-numbered grade is coarser and a higher-numbered grade is finer, according to Norton’s UK sandpaper guide. Coarser paper generally removes material more aggressively; finer paper is used to smooth a surface and prepare it for a finer finish.
Progress from coarse to fine as the job requires. Skipping a grade may leave scratches that take longer to remove later, so it does not necessarily save time. There is no single grit sequence that fits every substrate, coating, finish, or sanding method: follow the material and finish requirements, and check the abrasive maker’s recommendations.
Norton’s sandpaper guide also discusses grain, backing, storage, and safety alongside grade progression.

For grinding wheels, account for the machine and process
A grinding-wheel specification depends on more than the material or grit. Norton application engineer Dave Goetz identifies seven factors to consider when specifying a wheel:
- Material being ground
- Severity of the operation
- Required finish and form accuracy
- Area of contact between wheel and workpiece
- Wheel speed
- Coolant use
- Machine or spindle horsepower
These factors can point toward different choices, so use them to narrow the options rather than treating any one factor as decisive. Confirm the wheel’s specification against the machine and job requirements; do not infer compatibility from appearance.
Read Norton’s seven-factor guide for more detail on wheel selection.

- Extreme Durability and Value : Made of hard zirconia alumina material which lasts longer than standard aluminum oxide abrasive material; These flap discs also feature durable fiberglass backing plates requiring less pressure for heavy stock removal and provides with extra secure safe assurance - absorbing vibrations without smear during usage
- More Emery Cloth : Each flap disc has 80 pieces of emery cloth which is much more efficient than other all 72-piece-emery-cloth abrasive grinding wheels now on the market. It more effectively improves the durability and density of the flap discs
- 20 PCS T29 & 4 PCS T27 : T29 Includes 10 pcs 40 grit / 5 pcs of 60 grit / 3 pcs 80 grit / 2 pcs 120 grit, better for frequently contouring, shaping surfaces and more aggressive grinding during projects; T27 includes 4 pcs 40 grit as a complement to the project requirements of flat sanding and smoothing; Perfect collocation for all your project needs
- Etched Grit Number and Color Coding : Flap discs with different grits also have different colored label for differentiation; Each abrasive grinding wheel has its own grit number etched on the metal ring for easier identification even if missing label
- Great Performance : Each 4.5" x 7/8 inch arbor size flap disc is compatible with angle grinders operatable of up to 13,300 RPM and 80 m/s; Ideal for high performance blending and stock removal on metals non-ferrous materials, fiberglass, plastics, woods and other uneven surfaces
Compare candidates without guessing
If more than one abrasive is suitable, compare them under the same job conditions. Norton recommends holding one measure constant—time, material removed, or abrasive wear—and observing the others. For example, grind for a fixed time and compare the amount removed and the product wear. This is a comparison method, not evidence that any particular abrasive will perform better in your application.
Keep the relevant conditions consistent, including workpiece, machine, operation, and process setup. Consider:
- Material and hardness compatibility
- Removal rate and achieved finish or form accuracy
- Abrasive wear or service life
- Machine fit, operating speed, and mounting
- Coolant and other process conditions
- Purchase price in relation to the operation’s total cost
A “best” abrasive cannot be identified without a defined application and a fair basis for comparison. Norton discusses performance, productivity, price, and total cost in its fabrication product guide.

Use and handle abrasives safely
Follow the current package directions and the machine manufacturer’s instructions. Norton advises using eye and face protection, respiratory protection appropriate to the material being abraded, and ventilation where possible. Avoid grinding near flammable materials, and follow applicable workplace safety requirements.
- Check the product label and tool instructions for intended use and compatibility.
- Verify size, mounting, speed rating, and guard requirements before fitting a wheel or disc.
- Use protective equipment suited to the operation and the dust or debris it creates.
- Keep grinding away from flammable materials and provide ventilation where possible.
Consult Norton’s safety and application guidance, as well as the instructions supplied with your specific product and tool.
