For many residential sand filters, the standard media is No. 20 silica pool-filter sand, typically specified at 0.45–0.55 mm. The right choice for your pool, however, is the grade and quantity listed for your exact filter model. Check its manual and nameplate before buying, and do not substitute glass, zeolite, or another media unless the manufacturer says it is compatible.
What type of sand do I use for my sand filter?
Start with the filter manufacturer’s specification. For the models covered by its Sand Dollar and Cristal-Flo II manual, Pentair requires No. 20 standard silica sand, particle size 0.45–0.55 mm, and a uniformity coefficient of 1.75 or less. The manual states: “You must use only No. 20 standard silica sand having a uniformity coefficient of 1.75 or less.”
Hayward likewise identifies 0.45–0.55 mm media as No. 20 silica pool sand for its S311SX and S360SX filters in its model specification sheet. These are examples of manufacturer specifications, not a substitute for checking your own model.
How to choose the right grade
- Find the model number on the filter nameplate and locate its manual.
- Confirm the required media type and particle-size range. “Pool-filter sand” alone is not a precise enough specification.
- Check the fill quantity in the manual; different filters require different amounts.
- Buy media labeled for pool filters that matches those requirements. Do not use ordinary play sand or assume another filter’s specification applies.
Pentair’s System 3 manual warns that other sands may reduce performance, damage the pump, and void the warranty. That warning applies to the System 3 filter covered by the manual; consult the documentation for your own filter before selecting media.

How do I choose the right sand filter media for my pool?
Compatibility comes before a claimed filtration rating. A finer stated rating does not mean a medium is safe for every filter, and media amount and maintenance instructions can differ. Compare options only after the manual confirms the alternative is permitted.

The filtration figures are Hayward’s category comparisons, not independently established ratings for every product or pool setup. Pentair lists a 20–100 micron range for sand filters on its System 3 product page. Because manufacturers publish different figures, treat a rating as product-specific information rather than a universal promise.

How much filter sand should you buy?
Use the quantity specified for your filter model, not a general estimate based on pool size or another filter. Pentair instructs owners to use the precise amount listed for the filter, while Hayward’s specifications show that required sand quantities vary between models. Check the manual before ordering so the media grade and amount both match.

What to verify before filling the filter
- Confirm that the media is the type and grade specified for your exact model.
- Measure the quantity against the manual rather than filling by eye.
- For glass or zeolite, verify explicit compatibility and any special operating or maintenance directions.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation and startup instructions after loading media.
