What compressor does a Tornador need?
For the US-market Z-010 Classic and Z-020 Black, Tornador Tools says its cleaning tools work best with a compressor producing 5 CFM, or at least 85 PSI. Those are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not independent test results. The Z-010 product page also gives 60 PSI as a minimum, while its instructions call for a constant 75–90 PSI for optimum performance and prohibit exceeding 90 PSI. CFM and pressure describe different requirements. Pressure is the force available at the tool; airflow is the volume the compressor can deliver. A compressor with a high maximum-PSI rating is not necessarily able to supply enough air while the Tornador is running. Check the compressor’s delivered CFM at the pressure you intend to use, rather than relying on a maximum-pressure label or a free-air rating that does not specify pressure.
How to compare compressors for Tornador use
1. Check delivered airflow at working pressure
Use the Tornador’s model-specific airflow guidance as your starting point, then compare it with the compressor’s stated output at the relevant pressure. Tornador Tools US gives 5 CFM or at least 85 PSI as its recommendation for the Z-010 and Z-020, but it does not provide a combined sizing formula for a Tornador and other tools.

2. Confirm the pressure range and regulation
Set the regulator to the exact tool’s published operating range. For the Z-010, the instructions specify constant 75–90 PSI for optimum performance and say not to exceed 90 PSI. Do not increase pressure beyond the tool’s limit to compensate for insufficient airflow. Tornador instructions.
3. Match the compressor to your work pattern
Occasional, short bursts and extended continuous use place different demands on a compressor. Tornador Germany emphasizes stable airflow during continuous operation. Its professional FAQ recommends 270–300 L/min at working pressure for optimal performance, and its Z-020RS page lists approximately 270 L/min air consumption with a maximum pressure of 6.5 bar. 4. Account for other tools used at the same time
If you plan to run a Tornador alongside another air tool, size the system for the simultaneous demand. Use each tool’s own manual or manufacturer specifications and consider how long each will operate. The Tornador sources cited here do not state a combined CFM requirement, so there is no supported single compressor size for every multi-tool setup.
5. Consider the power supply and workspace
Check that the compressor’s voltage and power requirements suit the available electrical supply, and consider portability, noise and space for a fixed garage or mobile setup. Tornador Germany says some 230 V units can run its Z-020RS and identifies suitability for 2.2 kW / 240 V piston compressors. 6. Treat tank capacity as one factor, not the deciding number
A larger tank can provide a reserve of compressed air, and Tornador Germany says a bigger tank and stable pressure output can improve efficiency and results. The reviewed Tornador sources do not specify a universal minimum tank size. Assess tank capacity alongside airflow at working pressure and the length of your work sessions rather than rejecting or selecting a compressor on tank size alone. TORNADOR Germany professional FAQ.
How a Tornador fits into detailing work
Interior cleaning
Tornador’s Z-010 and Z-020 product pages describe cleaning dashboards, door panels, steering wheels, fabric upholstery, carpets, floor mats, seams and the hard-to-reach spaces between seats. Tornador Germany also lists vents and boot areas. The Z-020 Black is described by Tornador Tools as more effective than the Classic on persistent spots and heavily soiled areas; that is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent comparative test. Exterior detailing
US product guidance also lists convertible tops, body seams, wheels and emblems. Tornador describes applying a fine mist, wiping with microfiber and then using compressed air to dry. Foam and wash tasks are a separate use case
The Z-011 Foam Gun is a separate product, not a pressure guide for the Z-010 or Z-020. Tornador says it operates with a compressor capable of 60–90 PSI and that higher pressure produces more foam. Its page describes use with vehicle shampoo and foaming carpet or upholstery cleaners, among other cleaners, and says to flush the gun between uses to prevent cross-contamination. Keep air and cleaning products under control
The Z-010 instructions advise keeping the compressor tank and air lines free of oil and water contamination. They also require eye and hearing protection, warn against pointing the tool at the face or body, prohibit exceeding 90 PSI, and caution against acidic, flammable or combustible products; the instructions say to use Tornador products. Check the current manual for your exact model and market before operating. Tornador instructions.
For routine use, follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning solutions and wipe-downs, including use of microfiber where specified. If you use the separate Z-011 Foam Gun, flush it between different products to reduce cross-contamination. Tornador Z-011 Foam Gun.
