A well-fitted chisel case starts with your actual tools, not a standard set of dimensions. Arrange the chisels you want to store, measure their length and total span, and size the interior around those measurements. Woodcraft’s “Chisel Box” plan, by Paul Anthony, uses grooved panels, a dadoed separator and a lid retainer to keep the tools organized and limit movement in transit.
How to size the case for your chisels
Woodcraft’s plan gives interior dimensions derived from the tools. Lay out the chisels you intend to keep together before cutting the case parts; a different set will produce different dimensions.
- Interior length: Measure the longest chisel and add 1 1/4 inches.
- Interior width: Arrange the chisels side by side in ascending length, with their bevels down and about 1/2 inch between them. Measure the full span and add 1 inch.
- Interior height: Place a strip over the chisel butts and measure the height needed to clear them. Add 1/8 inch.
These are interior measurements. The plan does not give a single finished outside size: wall thickness and panel fit determine the final dimensions.
Materials and panel-fit checks
The plan specifies 3/4-inch-thick solid wood for the walls and nominal 1/4-inch hardwood plywood for the lid and bottom. It calls for grooves 3/8 inch deep and 1/8 inch in from the edges, sized to the panels. Measure the plywood you have before cutting those grooves: nominal 1/4-inch hardwood plywood can be about 3/32 inch thick, according to the Woodcraft plan. A nominal label is not a substitute for checking the stock.

Build sequence for the fitted box
The defining feature of this design is that the box is assembled first and separated into lid and base afterward. The sequence below follows the plan; use your measured chisel layout to fit the internal parts.
- Cut the wall pieces, miter their ends, and cut grooves for the lid and bottom panels sized to the panels measured in hand.
- Glue the grooved, mitered walls around the panels to form a closed box.
- Cut spline slots at the corners and fit splines to reinforce them.
- Rip through the assembled case’s center to separate the lid from the base. Before the final cut, place shims in the kerf so the separated sides do not collapse onto the blade.
- Make a hardwood separator sized to the interior. Mark individual dado positions from the actual chisel widths, then cut the dadoes so each tool has its own location.
- Fit the hinges and catches, then attach a retainer strip to the lid. When the case closes, the strip meets the chisel butts and helps limit their movement.
Choose a storage format that fits your use
A closed fitted box is one option, not a universal answer. Consider whether you need to carry the chisels, reach them frequently at a bench, or store them in a fixed location. These plans and formats offer different trade-offs:

The best format depends on your workspace, transport needs and collection. A rack keeps tools accessible but does not enclose them; a fitted case adds an enclosure but requires a layout tailored to the tools. A folding lid or tambour door changes how the storage opens, so compare the mechanism and footprint with the space where you will use it.
