China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) placed the trailing suction hopper dredger Junguang into service on 15 May 2026. Built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), the vessel can carry up to 38,168 cubic metres of dredged material, work in water depths to 120 metres and support port construction, channel maintenance, reclamation, sand extraction, trenching and pipeline projects. CCCC says Junguang’s integrated control system can automate navigation and dredging so that one crewmember can perform both functions. Its first announced local assignment is channel-maintenance work at the Port of Guangzhou.
What is the Junguang dredger?
Junguang is a large trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), a self-propelled vessel that uses dragheads and suction pipes to loosen seabed material, pumps the mixture aboard, carries it in a hopper and then discharges it at a placement site. CCCC formally commissioned the ship on 15 May 2026, following construction by ZPMC.

The vessel measures approximately 198 metres in length and 38.5 metres in beam. Its maximum hopper capacity is 38,168 cubic metres, and its stated maximum dredging depth is 120 metres. Those specifications place it in the 35,000-cubic-metre-class ultra-large TSHD category.
What will CCCC use Junguang for?

The Guangzhou work was identified as an upcoming deployment, not as a completed performance result. CCCC has not yet published post-commissioning production rates, fuel consumption or commercial-return data for Junguang.
How automated is the new dredger?
Junguang uses an intelligent control system covering navigation and dredging operations. The system is described as fully automatic, with a design goal of allowing one crewmember to handle navigation and dredging activities. That claim describes the vessel’s intended operating mode; the commissioning reports do not provide an independent test protocol, staffing record or achieved productivity figure.
The automation concept extends across the dredging, transport and discharge chain. It is intended to coordinate the vessel’s movement, seabed excavation, hopper loading and material release rather than treating each task as a separate manual operation.

How was the Junguang–Tongjun pair developed?
Junguang is the sister vessel of Tongjun. ZPMC launched both ships on 26 August 2025 as a two-vessel program for CCCC. CCCC Dredging handled conceptual design and onboard-equipment procurement; CCCC Tianjin Dredging Group and CCCC Guangzhou Dredging provided investment and led design and construction; CCCC’s National Engineering Research Center of Dredging Technology and Equipment handled EPC design, construction and intelligent-system development; and the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) collaborated on vessel design.
The builders identified four design objectives: smart operation, high efficiency, versatility and environmental friendliness. A digital-shipyard and modular-construction approach was reported by ZPMC/iMarine on 28 August 2025 to have improved construction efficiency by approximately 20%. The same launch report said the two vessels together have nearly 60,000 tons of total deadweight and can normally fill a mud tank in about 90 minutes.
Baird Maritime’s 2026 review of Tongjun said the vessels use more than 95% domestic content and are classed by China Classification Society.

How does Junguang compare with Tongjun?
The two ships share the same reported principal dimensions and hopper capacity, but their published milestones and disclosed performance details differ.

CCCC described Tongjun as China’s first independently designed and built 35,000-cubic-metre-class dredger and said it was the first dredger globally to receive the International Maritime Organization’s intelligent dredging ship class notation. Those are statements attributed to CCCC; they should not be read as independently verified rankings of every dredger worldwide.

CCCC’s Xinhaixun represents a different design priority. Reported in November 2024, it is a 155.7-metre TSHD with dual-fuel LNG/diesel propulsion. CCCC said LNG operation cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and nitrogen-oxide emissions by more than 80% compared with traditional diesel, while its intelligent dredging control improves operational efficiency by 8%.

Junguang and Tongjun are substantially larger, 38,168-cubic-metre-class platforms aimed at deep dredging, reclamation and other heavy marine works. Xinhaixun is positioned for lower-emission coastal, channel and inland-water operations. The available reports do not identify an equivalent dual-fuel emissions claim for Junguang, nor do they provide a common test method for ranking the three vessels’ automation.
What is known—and not yet known—about Junguang’s performance?
- Established: commissioning date, dimensions, hopper capacity, 120-metre stated dredging depth, intended mission range and intelligent-control design.
- Not yet published: achieved dredging output, actual cycle times in service, fuel use, emissions, maintenance intervals, crew complement in routine operations and financial returns.
- Deployment qualification: Guangzhou channel maintenance was announced as an early local project, but no completed results were reported with the commissioning announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a trailing suction hopper dredger move excavated material?
A TSHD drags suction heads along the seabed while pumps lift the sediment-water mixture into an onboard hopper. The vessel then sails to a disposal or reclamation area and releases the load by opening bottom doors, pumping it ashore or using another discharge arrangement.
Why does hopper capacity matter on a dredging project?
A larger hopper can carry more material per sailing cycle, potentially reducing trips between the excavation area and the discharge site. Actual productivity still depends on sediment type, sailing distance, pump performance, weather, draft limits and the approved placement method.
What does the IMO intelligent dredging ship notation signify?
The notation is a class-based designation addressing intelligent dredging-ship functions. It is not, by itself, a guarantee of a particular production rate, fuel saving or level of unmanned operation.
Can Junguang operate in every project at 120 metres?
The 120-metre figure is the vessel’s stated maximum dredging depth. Project execution at that depth would still depend on seabed conditions, suction equipment, stability, permits, weather and the operating limits set by the owner and classification requirements.
