Start by identifying your generator’s exact model number, then use that model’s Champion operator manual. Troubleshooting tables and fault codes are not universal: the symptom table below is specific to model 100406, while the EFI codes are specific to model 100485. A procedure for another model may not apply.
Find your model number and manual first
Champion’s manuals and diagrams lookup is organized by model number; use the exact number on your generator to locate its operator manual and parts diagram. Champion also separates support material for inverter and open-frame generators, so do not assume that a procedure for one type fits another. If you cannot identify the model or find the manual, contact Champion through its current support page.
The symptom checks below identify what Champion lists for model 100406. Treat them as model-specific examples, not universal instructions. Follow the manual for your own generator for shutdown, inspection, restart, and service procedures.
Before troubleshooting, make the generator safe
- Stop the engine before making adjustments or inspecting service points, and follow the manual’s shutdown procedure.
- Champion Power Equipment’s Basic Engine Diagnostics article states: “DO NOT make any adjustments to the product without first stopping the engine and disconnecting the spark plug wire.”
- Let the engine cool completely before touching hot parts. Keep cigarettes, sparks, and flames away from fuel-related parts.
- Do not continue operating with damaged wiring, and never bypass or defeat a circuit breaker. If a check requires internal electrical work, stop and contact support or a qualified service provider.
Generator will not start
For model 100406, Champion lists three possible causes: no fuel, a faulty spark plug, or a load connected during startup. Its manual’s corresponding actions are to add fuel, replace the spark plug, or remove the load. Confirm the correct fuel and starting procedure in your own model’s manual before trying again.

Champion’s general diagnostic sequence considers fuel supply, air intake, compression, and spark. Use that sequence only as a guide under the exact manual’s instructions; it does not replace model-specific service steps. A spark plug may require a tool supplied with the engine or a 14 mm socket, but tool size and plug fit should be confirmed for your model before removal. Do not assume a replacement plug or air filter is compatible without checking the manual or parts listing.
Starts but runs roughly
For model 100406, Champion lists low oil, an incorrectly positioned choke, and a loose spark plug wire as possible causes. With the engine stopped, use the model manual to verify oil level and choke position, and inspect only accessible connections. The broader fuel, air-filter, compression, and spark checks may help diagnose persistent rough running, but a result or remedy for 100406 is not a guarantee for another model.

Generator shuts down during operation
The 100406 manual identifies running out of fuel and low oil as possible causes. For the oil check, it instructs the owner to place the generator on a flat, level surface. Follow your own manual’s method and restart instructions; do not restart repeatedly without addressing the cause of a shutdown.
Generator cannot supply enough power or is overheating
For model 100406, Champion lists an overloaded generator and insufficient ventilation as possible causes of low power or overheating. Disconnect loads and check that airflow around the unit is not obstructed, following the clearances and load limits in your manual. Reduce the connected load if it exceeds the generator’s rated capacity. Shut the unit down if overheating continues or the cause is unclear.

Repeated circuit breaker tripping
On model 100406, Champion’s guidance points to overload or a faulty cord or connected device. Remove the loads, then inspect externally accessible cords and devices only when the generator is safely shut down. Replace damaged, bare, or frayed cords and defective devices rather than using them. If the breaker trips again after you have removed suspect loads and corrected visible cord or device problems, stop using the generator and seek service; never hold a breaker closed or substitute a larger breaker.
No AC output
For model 100406, the possible causes listed in the manual include a cable connection problem, a defective connected device, an open circuit breaker, loose wiring, a brush assembly fault, an AVR fault, or another fault. Start only with external checks: confirm the connected device and cable are sound and connected as directed, and check the breaker according to the manual. If these checks do not restore output, contact Champion support or a service center. The manual directs brush and AVR replacement to a service center; internal generator electrical repair is not a routine owner check.

EFI fault codes: model 100485 only
Champion’s EFI fault-code bulletin applies to model 100485. The examples below should not be used to interpret codes on other generators; consult the exact model manual or Champion support for those.

When to stop and get service
Leave internal electrical faults, including brush or AVR work on model 100406, to a service center. Champion’s 100406 manual advises contacting technical service and obtaining authorization for warranty repair. Use the contact details in your exact manual or on Champion’s current support page rather than relying on an old schedule or a number listed for a different model.
