If your petrol chainsaw starts but stalls when you release the throttle, check the fuel and routine maintenance items first, then follow the idle-adjustment procedure in the manual for your exact saw. There is no universal carburetor setting for all chainsaws. If the chain moves while the engine is idling, stop the engine and treat it as a safety issue.
Start with the exact saw’s manual
Before adjusting screws or buying parts, identify the chainsaw’s make, model, and market version and find its matching operator’s manual. Fuel requirements, adjustment steps, and service specifications vary by model. Manuals may include air-filter cleaning, spark-plug checks, standard settings, or idle adjustment, but those instructions are not interchangeable between saws.
The National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s S-212 student workbook likewise advises following the owner’s manual and checking filters and fuel mixture before adjusting idle: S-212 student workbook.
Check fuel and routine maintenance first
Confirm the fuel is correct for your model
Use the fuel type and, for a two-stroke saw, the mixture specified in the manual. Do not rely on a generic fuel ratio found online. Fuel condition and storage guidance also depend on the manufacturer. For example, STIHL’s chainsaw FAQ says STIHL gasoline-powered products may use gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol (E10), cautions against higher ethanol content for its products, and recommends storing a unit dry if it will be unused for more than 30 days. That is STIHL guidance, not a rule for every chainsaw.

Inspect the air filter and spark plug
Clean the air filter and inspect the spark plug as directed in the manual. Husqvarna’s chainsaw maintenance checklist includes these items and calls for examining the fuel filter and fuel hose, replacing them if necessary. These checks can reveal maintenance needs, but they do not prove that any one part caused an idle problem.
If a part needs replacement, confirm its part number and compatibility against the exact saw’s manual before buying a replacement chainsaw air filter or model-specific spark plug.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

Adjust idle only by the model-specific procedure
Some operator’s manuals include idle-speed or standard carburetor adjustment as a troubleshooting step. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one screw label, target speed, or adjustment sequence for every chainsaw. Use the exact manual and observe its stated conditions; do not copy screw positions or settings from another model.
If the manual’s procedure does not resolve the problem, or the adjustment requires specialist tools or measurements, stop and contact a qualified service provider. Repeatedly turning adjustment screws without the correct procedure can make the saw less safe or harder to diagnose.

Stop if the chain moves at idle
A chain that moves when the engine is supposed to be idling is a serious safety warning. Yard Force’s support guidance advises engaging the chain brake during checks where directed and keeping hands clear during running adjustments: My Petrol Chainsaw will not idle. This does not replace the safety instructions for your own saw.
