CES Sets the Stage for Robot Vacuums to Reach New Heights

Robot vacuums are beginning to move beyond the flat-floor assumption that has shaped the category for years. At CES 2026, manufacturers showed machines designed to cross taller thresholds, clean beneath lower furniture, recognize more household obstacles, automate mopping, and—most dramatically—navigate stairs.

The most important distinction for buyers is between what CES demonstrated and what is available, supported, and independently proven. Stair-climbing robots remain an early development. Higher threshold clearance, thinner bodies, improved obstacle avoidance, and more automated docks are the nearer-term advances that can affect an ordinary home today.

From robot vacuum to mobile floor-care system

CES 2026, held in Las Vegas from January 6 through January 9, presented robot vacuums as more than autonomous discs that return to a charging dock. The category is moving toward mobile household floor-care platforms: machines that can travel through more of a home, decide how to respond to objects and floor surfaces, wash and dry their own cleaning equipment, and fit into increasingly integrated home systems.

That shift matters because many current robots remain limited by the built environment. A door saddle, thick transition strip, track, room divider, staircase, or low sofa can stop an otherwise capable machine. The next generation is aimed at those physical constraints as much as at suction power.

CES also highlighted a less visible development: the dock is becoming as important as the robot. Auto-emptying, mop washing, heated drying, water handling, detergent management, and—in LG’s award-winning built-in concept—steam cleaning are intended to reduce the daily work associated with robotic cleaning.

For homeowners, that means evaluating the entire system, including its footprint, maintenance, privacy requirements, and compatibility with the home’s floors and transitions—not just the robot’s headline specification.

The headline breakthrough: robots attempting stairs

Roborock’s Saros Rover attracted attention with a wheel-leg architecture intended to raise and lower the robot, handle slopes, and navigate stairs. Roborock described it as a first-generation wheel-leg robotic vacuum. Its announcement is significant because a conventional robot can be autonomous on one floor but still needs to be carried upstairs by a person.

If stair mobility becomes reliable, a robot could evolve from a room-to-room appliance into a genuinely multi-floor cleaner. But climbing stairs is a much harder engineering problem than crossing a high threshold. The machine must control its center of gravity while changing elevation, maintain traction, avoid falling or wedging itself, protect stair edges, and keep its sensors oriented correctly.

Stair design adds further complications. Carpeted stairs, polished timber, tile, narrow treads, open risers, curved stairs, and staircases with unusual nosings present different mechanical and safety challenges. A robot that transports itself between floors may not necessarily vacuum stair treads or clean riser edges effectively.

As of August 18, 2026, the Saros Rover should be treated as a watch-list product rather than a normal purchase recommendation. Roborock’s announcement did not establish a final U.S. retail price or a complete consumer support and warranty structure. Its “world’s first” description should also be understood as a manufacturer claim, not independent verification. See Roborock’s announcement.

Higher thresholds may matter more than stairs

For most homes, the nearer-term breakthrough is not stair climbing but better handling of thresholds. Door saddles, thick flooring transitions, sliding-door tracks, and raised room dividers can divide a house into separate cleaning zones.

Roborock lists the Saros 20 as capable of crossing up to 8.5 centimeters in a tested double-layer configuration: a 4.5-centimeter threshold plus an additional 4-centimeter track. It separately lists up to 4.5 centimeters for a single threshold. Dreame lists the X60 Max Ultra Complete and X60 Ultra as capable of crossing obstacles up to 3.47 inches, or 8.8 centimeters.

These are manufacturer test claims, not universal guarantees. A robot may perform differently when the transition is sharp-edged, slippery, irregular, approached at an angle, or surrounded by furniture. Before buying, measure:

  • the vertical height of every threshold;
  • whether the edge is rounded or abrupt;
  • the direction from which the robot will normally approach;
  • the clearance around the dock and transition; and
  • whether the claimed measurement refers to one obstacle or a specially configured test arrangement.

A small, properly fitted ramp or transition modification may solve a persistent access problem more reliably than paying a premium for a robot whose maximum clearance has not been tested in that particular home.

Roborock’s regional product information provides the tested Saros 20 configuration, while Dreame’s X60 Max Ultra Complete page and X60 Ultra page provide its stated specifications.

The low-clearance race

Dreame’s X60 models were presented at just 3.13 inches, or 7.95 centimeters, tall. That targets one of the most common limitations in existing homes: furniture that is high enough to appear accessible but too low for a conventional robot.

  • Ultra-Slim Design, Smart Sensors: The robot cleaner is 2.99 inches in height, it easily reaches under beds, sofas, and cabinets for thorough cleaning. With anti-collision and anti-fall sensor technology, it intelligently navigates around obstacles, walls, and stairs

A thinner body can reach farther beneath beds, sofas, cabinets, and built-in units. It may also reduce the need to move furniture manually. The trade-off is that a smaller robot has less room for a battery, dust bin, water tank, brush assembly, sensors, and lifting or retracting mechanisms. A thin robot can therefore still require a large, tall dock.

Judge the total system footprint, not just the robot’s height. Check the dock’s width, depth, height, front clearance, access to water tanks, and space needed for the robot to leave and return. A machine that fits under a sofa but cannot be serviced comfortably is not necessarily a practical installation.

Dreame lists the X60 Max Ultra Complete at a $1,699.99 U.S. MSRP and the X60 Ultra at $1,499.99. Promotional prices can change, so those figures should be treated as listed MSRPs rather than permanent selling prices.

AI is useful only when it improves autonomy

“AI-powered” is not a complete feature description. In a robot vacuum, useful recognition should reduce stuck events, avoid genuine hazards, distinguish floor types, improve mapping, or change cleaning behavior appropriately.

Dreame says its X60 models recognize more than 280 object types and use proactive lighting to inspect dark areas. These are vendor claims, not independently validated performance results. The real test is how consistently the robot handles cables, shoes, toys, pet bowls, dark rugs, narrow chair legs, reflective surfaces, and pet waste in ordinary lighting and clutter.

Narwal’s Flow 2 announcement described dual 1080p RGB cameras and a hybrid on-device/cloud AI system. If the robot cannot identify an object locally, Narwal said it can capture an image and send it to an AI model for analysis. That may improve recognition, but it introduces privacy and connectivity questions:

  • What images are transmitted?
  • Where are they processed?
  • How long are they retained?
  • Can cloud recognition be disabled?
  • Does basic cleaning work without an account or internet connection?

Buyers should also expect imperfect avoidance. AI may correctly identify an object but classify a harmless item as a hazard, leaving part of a room uncleaned. No obstacle-avoidance system should be treated as guaranteed protection against a fresh pet accident.

Mopping is becoming the premium differentiator

Premium models increasingly compete on how little manual mopping maintenance they require. CES-era systems emphasize roller mops, increased pressure, edge-reaching hardware, hot-water washing, heated drying, detergent handling, and self-cleaning mechanisms.

Roborock’s Qrevo Curv 2 Flow emphasizes a real-time self-cleaning roller mop and increased mopping pressure. Dreame lists 212°F/100°C mop self-cleaning for the X60 Max Ultra Complete. The X60 Ultra lists 104°F/40°C hot-water mopping and 212°F/100°C self-cleaning.

Those figures describe system specifications supplied by the manufacturer. They do not prove that the entire floor receives water at that temperature or that every stain, residue, or odor will be removed. Hot-water washing is not the same as sterilization, and a dock still needs routine cleaning.

In carpet-and-hard-floor homes, check whether the mop lifts high enough, retracts, or detaches; whether carpet boost is automatic; and whether the robot can avoid wetting rugs. A complex mop system can be a major convenience on sealed hard floors but unnecessary expense for a home that primarily needs vacuuming.

The dock is convenient, not maintenance-free

Self-emptying and self-washing reduce daily labor, but they do not eliminate maintenance. Owners still need to empty dirty-water tanks, refill clean water, clean washboards and filters, remove hair from brushes and wheels, and replace dust bags, mop pads, filters, and side brushes.

Dreame’s X60 Ultra support documentation calls for recurring care that includes cleaning the clean-water tank approximately every two weeks, replacing the main brush every six to 12 months, replacing the dust-box filter every three to six months, cleaning the washboard filter every one to two months, and cleaning charging contacts as needed. Exact intervals vary by model and usage. Consult the relevant manufacturer maintenance documentation.

Also plan for stagnant water, odors, dock accessibility, and consumable costs. A dock hidden under a counter or inside cabinetry may look better, but it must remain level, ventilated, serviceable, and connected to the required power and water arrangements. LG’s CES Innovation Award-winning built-in station points toward a future in which the dock is designed into the home, potentially under a sink or behind a door. An award recognizes an entry or concept; it is not independent proof of cleaning effectiveness or retail readiness. LG’s announcement is available here.

What can you buy now?

Available or listed for purchase

  • Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete: listed by Dreame US at $1,699.99 MSRP, with a 3.13-inch body, claimed 35,000 Pa suction, object recognition, proactive lighting, stated obstacle crossing up to 3.47 inches, and 100°C mop self-cleaning.
  • Dreame X60 Ultra: listed at $1,499.99, with similar thin-body, suction, obstacle-crossing, hot-water mopping, and self-cleaning claims.
  • iRobot Roomba Max 715: announced in July 2026 at a $699.99 MSRP, with vacuum-only operation, an AutoEmpty dock, ClearView Pro LiDAR, PrecisionVision AI obstacle avoidance, and iRobot’s claim of four-times stronger power-lifting suction than its cited comparison baseline. The four-times figure is an iRobot claim.

The Roomba Max 715 may suit buyers who want an established Roomba ecosystem and automated vacuuming without an elaborate mopping platform. It does not address stair navigation or the threshold-focused innovations shown by Roborock and Dreame. Confirm current stock, accessories, app requirements, warranty terms, and any subscription conditions before purchasing. See iRobot’s announcement.

Announced or region-dependent

Roborock’s Saros 20 and Qrevo Curv 2 Flow, Narwal’s Flow 2, Ecovacs models shown at CES, and LG’s built-in station require availability, pricing, support, and warranty confirmation for the buyer’s region. Roborock explicitly notes that availability varies by market. Do not describe a CES announcement as a current U.S. purchase option without a live official product page and a confirmed retail path.

Concepts and demonstrations

Highly experimental multi-floor, flying, or drone-assisted systems should be treated as concepts unless the manufacturer provides a current retail page, price, shipping date, support documentation, and warranty information.

Who should wait—and who should buy now?

Wait if you need a specific breakthrough

Waiting makes sense for a multi-floor household that specifically needs stair mobility, a home with unusually tall transitions, or an early adopter willing to accept uncertain pricing, firmware, repairability, and availability. It also makes sense if you want independent testing of a newly announced mechanism rather than relying on a CES demonstration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy now if your needs are conventional

A single-level home can usually gain more from reliable obstacle avoidance, pet-hair pickup, quiet operation, a well-sized dock, replacement-part availability, stable scheduling, and effective mop washing than from experimental mobility. A discounted previous-generation premium robot may deliver mapping, auto-emptying, obstacle avoidance, and routine cleaning at a lower cost.

For tall thresholds, prioritize verified geometry and recovery behavior over suction numbers. For pets, look for waste avoidance, hair-resistant brushes, camera controls, and easy brush access. For privacy-sensitive homes, check camera permissions, cloud processing, data retention, deletion controls, and whether cleaning works offline.

The construction and home-design implication

Better robot mobility does not remove the value of thoughtful transitions and service access. Smooth, predictable thresholds, adequate dock clearance, accessible water and power, and level installation can help any robot perform more reliably. Built-in docks may reduce visual clutter, but they need ventilation and convenient maintenance access.

As robots become more capable, floor-care planning may become part of broader home-design decisions: where a dock can live, how tall a transition should be, whether cabinetry leaves enough clearance, and how residents will access tanks, filters, brushes, and consumables. The most successful installation will pair the robot’s capabilities with the physical realities of the home.

Verdict

CES 2026 raised the ambition of robot vacuums. Roborock’s wheel-leg Saros Rover points toward multi-floor mobility; higher-threshold systems may solve a more immediate everyday problem; Dreame’s thin X60 models target neglected spaces beneath furniture; AI and automated mopping aim to reduce supervision; and LG’s built-in station imagines a less visible cleaning system.

But the show demonstrated a direction, not universal reliability. Suction figures are not standardized performance scores, “self-cleaning” does not mean maintenance-free, cloud AI raises privacy questions, and stair climbing remains distinct from stair cleaning. In 2026, the best buying decision is still based on verified availability, the geometry of the home, serviceability, and long-term support—not the most spectacular CES feature.
