Bose is yanking key features from its SoundTouch speakers—but they are not necessarily dead

Bose ended SoundTouch cloud support on May 6, 2026. That removed important features—including editable presets, in-app music-service browsing, Alexa commands, and SoundTouch 10 stereo pairing—but it did not generally disable the speakers. Depending on the model, SoundTouch owners can still use Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, AUX, HDMI, optical audio, local controls, and local grouping.

The practical question is no longer whether SoundTouch works in the abstract. It is which parts of your particular system depended on Bose’s retired cloud service.

What happened to Bose SoundTouch?

SoundTouch products launched in 2013. In October 2025, Bose announced that it would end SoundTouch cloud support on February 18, 2026. Bose later extended the transition, making May 6, 2026 the operative shutdown date. On that date, the SoundTouch app moved to a reduced, locally operating version.

Bose’s current explanation and feature list are available on its SoundTouch end-of-life page. The app remains available for download “until further notice,” according to Bose, but its availability does not mean the former cloud service has returned.

What works and what does not

Feature Status after May 6, 2026 Qualification
SoundTouch presets Limited and unsupported Some existing presets may still work, but Bose cannot guarantee them. Existing presets cannot be changed.
Music-service browsing in the SoundTouch app Removed Use the individual music service’s app instead.
TuneIn or Pandora playback from SoundTouch Removed Start playback in the service’s own app and send it by Bluetooth, AirPlay, or AUX.
Spotify Connect Continues Start playback from Spotify rather than the old SoundTouch interface.
Bluetooth Continues where supported Model-specific compatibility applies.
AirPlay Continues where supported Primarily useful with Apple devices.
AUX and other wired inputs Continue where fitted Input availability varies by model.
Local setup and configuration Continues The phone and system must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Local play, pause, skip, volume, and grouping Continue Available through the reduced local app, subject to the product and network setup.
SoundTouch 10 stereo pairing Removed Bose specifically lists this feature as no longer working.
Alexa commands Removed Cloud-dependent SoundTouch voice commands are no longer available.
Firmware and security updates Removed Bose advises using the system on a secure, private network.

In other words, Bose retired the cloud infrastructure and the features built on it. It did not reduce every SoundTouch product to Bluetooth only, and it did not universally brick the hardware.

The biggest loss: presets

Presets were one of SoundTouch’s defining conveniences, particularly for radio stations and frequently used services. Bose says access to presets through the SoundTouch cloud is no longer available. Some existing presets may continue to function, but Bose cannot guarantee that they will, and owners can no longer edit existing presets.

Before resetting or changing a system, write down the stations, albums, or playlists attached to important presets. Recreate those selections as favorites inside the relevant TuneIn, Pandora, Spotify, or other service apps. That preserves the content choice, but it does not necessarily restore one-touch playback from the SoundTouch hardware buttons. It is a workaround, not an equivalent replacement.

How to keep using a SoundTouch system

Bluetooth

  1. Open TuneIn, Pandora, another music app, or a radio app on your phone.
  2. Put the SoundTouch system into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  3. Select the speaker in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
  4. Start playback in the source app.
  5. Adjust volume from the phone or speaker.

Use the product manual or Bose support documentation for model-specific pairing instructions. Bluetooth is broadly practical, but playback remains tied to the phone: calls, notifications, and other audio can interrupt it, and range depends on local conditions.

AirPlay

On a compatible Apple device, open the desired music or radio app, select its AirPlay output control, and choose the SoundTouch system. AirPlay remains an official direct-streaming method, but not every SoundTouch model supports it, and the source app must provide AirPlay output.

  • STEREO ON THE GO: Amp up the adventure with more sound when you link two compatible Bose speakers, choose Stereo Mode for left and right channels, or go for Party Mode for even bigger, bolder sound

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect remains available on supported systems. Start playback in the Spotify app and select the SoundTouch speaker as the output. This is different from browsing Spotify inside the old SoundTouch interface: Spotify now supplies the playback session while the Bose system acts as the network endpoint.

AUX and wired sources

AUX can connect a phone, computer, wireless audio receiver, dedicated radio, or other source. It is often the most predictable fallback because it does not depend on Bose’s retired cloud service. The exact connector and input options are model-specific.

Compatible SoundTouch soundbars and home-theater systems can also continue receiving television audio through HDMI or optical connections. The shutdown primarily affects cloud-connected music and control features, not ordinary wired TV input.

Android users without Bluetooth

Bose specifically suggests that Android users whose system lacks Bluetooth consider a wireless audio receiver connected to the speaker’s AUX input. This can provide a practical wireless bridge, but it cannot restore presets, integrated service browsing, Alexa, or Bose cloud control.

Does the SoundTouch app still work?

Yes, in a reduced local-control role. Bose says the updated app can set up and configure systems, remotely control them when the phone and products share the same Wi-Fi network, and group multiple systems locally. It can no longer browse integrated music services or initiate their content from inside the app.

App installation is therefore not evidence that the old SoundTouch service is operating. A downloadable app and a functioning cloud platform are separate things.

Not every SoundTouch product is affected in exactly the same way

The feature list differs across the SoundTouch 10, SoundTouch 20 Series III, SoundTouch 30 Series III, SoundTouch Wireless Link, Wave SoundTouch systems, soundbars, and home-theater products. Before deciding that a speaker is unusable, check:

  • the exact model and series;
  • whether it supports Bluetooth;
  • whether it supports AirPlay;
  • whether it has AUX, optical, HDMI, or another wired input;
  • whether it is used in a stereo pair or a multi-room group; and
  • whether the household uses iPhone or iPad, Android, or another source.

Do not assume that a SoundTouch 30 has the same surviving connections as a Wave system or a SoundTouch soundbar.

Stereo pairing is not the same as grouping

Bose specifically says stereo pairing for SoundTouch 10 systems no longer works, while local grouping remains available. These are different functions:

  • Stereo pairing uses two compatible speakers as left and right channels.
  • Multi-room grouping makes multiple systems play together.
  • Source casting sends audio from a phone or music app to one or more playback endpoints.

So “all multi-room playback has disappeared” is too broad. Test the exact arrangement in your home rather than assuming that every previous stereo or group configuration survives.

What owners should do now

  1. Open the SoundTouch app while the phone and system are on the same Wi-Fi network so the local-control version can apply or become available.
  2. Record important presets before resetting, replacing, or changing network settings.
  3. Recreate favorites inside the relevant music-service apps.
  4. Test each available source: Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, AUX, HDMI, and optical.
  5. Avoid a factory reset unless necessary. A reset can create additional setup work, and Bose does not promise that cloud-dependent configuration or presets will be preserved.
  6. Use a secure, private network. SoundTouch products no longer receive firmware or security updates.

Should you keep the speaker or replace it?

Keep it if:

  • Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, AUX, HDMI, or optical playback meets your needs.
  • You value the speaker’s sound and physical controls.
  • Existing local groups still work for your household.
  • Integrated presets and in-app service browsing are not essential.
  • You mainly use the product as a wired TV speaker or ordinary wireless speaker.

Replace or supplement it if:

  • One-touch presets are central to daily use.
  • You depend on browsing TuneIn or Pandora inside the Bose app.
  • Alexa control is important.
  • You need reliable, editable multi-room automation.
  • People using the system do not want to operate playback from a phone.
  • The lack of future firmware and security updates is unacceptable.

The cheapest route is usually to keep the hardware and add or use an available source. For Android users without Bluetooth, an AUX-connected wireless receiver may be enough. TV-focused owners can compare a current HDMI- or optical-compatible soundbar. Multi-room owners may prefer rebuilding around a current platform, but that means replacing the old ecosystem rather than restoring it.

Third-party tools: possible, but not equivalent to Bose support

Bose has made SoundTouch technical specifications available so independent developers can create compatible tools. One example, BoSonar, describes itself as an unofficial SoundTouch-related alternative.

Third-party software may appeal to technically confident owners, but it should not be treated as a Bose-supported, permanent, or guaranteed replacement. Compatibility can vary by model, and setup may involve network, account, privacy, and security considerations. Direct internet radio and cloud-based presets that depended on Bose’s official service should not be assumed to return.

Bose trade-in and replacement options

Bose offers a trade-in program in select regions. Eligibility, credit, products, and terms depend on the country and the date checked. It is an upgrade path—not compensation that restores the removed SoundTouch features.

For example, Bose’s current Smart Soundbar product page lists Bose app control, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and Chromecast built-in. It may suit a SoundTouch soundbar or home-theater owner who wants modern streaming alongside TV audio, but it is not a direct recreation of SoundTouch physical presets or exact multi-room compatibility. Current pricing and promotions should be checked on Bose’s page before purchase.

Another route is a new multi-room ecosystem such as the Sonos Era 100, whose official page lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, line-in, AirPlay 2, voice features, stereo pairing, and Sonos multi-room functionality. It may fit owners who prioritize current app-based multi-room control, but moving platforms means rebuilding the system. Sonos is also a connected ecosystem, so no platform can guarantee that future services or software will never change.

Accounts and personal data

Bose said it planned to delete product-usage and interaction information associated with SoundTouch products by May 15, 2026. That is separate from the physical speaker’s ability to play audio. A broader My Bose account can remain active for other Bose products and services, where available.

The bottom line

Bose has ended the defining cloud layer of SoundTouch, not necessarily the useful life of every SoundTouch speaker. Presets are no longer a supported, editable system; in-app music-service browsing, Alexa commands, SoundTouch 10 stereo pairing, and future firmware or security updates are gone. But many owners can continue listening through Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, AUX, HDMI, or optical connections, with local app controls and grouping still available on supported systems.

Test the inputs your model actually provides before replacing it. Replace or supplement the system only if the lost cloud features—not the speaker hardware—are essential to how you listen.
