The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is a Matter-over-Thread deadbolt with Apple Home Key and hands-free UWB unlocking. Announced at CES 2026 on January 6, it can unlock as an authorized iPhone or Apple Watch approaches—without tapping the lock, entering a code, or using the fingerprint reader. However, the headline feature requires specific Apple hardware, current software, Bluetooth, a Thread-capable Apple home hub, and the Wallet setting Unlock on Approach.
Aqara lists the standard U400 at $269.99 in the United States. That price may not represent the complete system cost if you also need an Apple home hub or Thread infrastructure.

What Aqara launched at CES 2026
Aqara introduced the Smart Lock U400 at CES on January 6, 2026, positioning it as a retrofit or replacement smart deadbolt rather than simply a “HomeKit lock.” Its more accurate description is a Matter-over-Thread smart deadbolt with Apple Home Key support and UWB unlock-on-approach.
The lock was demonstrated at Aqara’s CES booth, #51229 in Halls A–D of the Venetian Expo. It supports Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, and other Matter-compatible platforms, provided the relevant ecosystem has suitable Thread and Matter infrastructure. Aqara also lists Aliro readiness and plans for broader digital-key support. Aqara’s CES announcement provides the launch details.

Apple’s current terminology is Apple Home, not HomeKit, and Apple Home Key for the digital key stored in Apple Wallet. “HomeKit” remains useful when describing compatibility for readers familiar with the older name, but Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock and UWB hands-free unlocking are separate capabilities.
How hands-free UWB unlocking works
The intended experience is straightforward:
- Add the U400 to Aqara Home and Apple Home.
- Apple Home creates a digital home key in Apple Wallet.
- Enable Unlock on Approach for that key.
- Approach the door with an authorized, compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.
- The lock uses UWB distance and directional measurements to decide whether the approach is intentional.
- If the conditions are met, the exterior lock unlocks without a tap, passcode, or fingerprint scan.
Aqara says the system uses Time of Flight and Angle of Arrival calculations. Unlike ordinary Bluetooth proximity, which primarily indicates that a device is nearby, these measurements can help distinguish approaching the door from simply walking past it or lingering nearby. The U400 does not identify a person biometrically; it recognizes an authorized digital key on a supported device and evaluates the device’s distance, direction, and approach behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe manual describes hands-free unlocking as an exterior-only function. It is not intended to unlock merely because someone is standing close to the lock, and it does not unlock from an unlimited distance. Door geometry, the direction of approach, device position, and wireless conditions can all affect the experience. The U400 manual documents these operating limitations.
Compatibility: hands-free UWB versus tap-to-unlock
The most important buying distinction is that a device can support Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock without supporting UWB unlock-on-approach.
| Requirement | Capability |
|---|---|
| iPhone 11 or later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and iPhone 16e | Hands-free UWB unlocking |
| iOS 18.5 or later | Hands-free UWB unlocking |
| Apple Watch Series 6 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE | Hands-free UWB unlocking |
| watchOS 11.5 or later | Hands-free UWB unlocking |
| iPhone XS or later | Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock |
| iOS 17.1 or later | Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock |
| Apple Watch Series 4 or later | Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock |
| watchOS 10.1 or later | Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock |
| Thread-capable Apple home hub or compatible Thread Border Router | Apple Home and Thread-based functionality |
| Apple Wallet home key with Unlock on Approach enabled | Hands-free approach unlocking |
Aqara lists the Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, and HomePod (2nd generation) among compatible Apple home hubs. A compatible third-party Thread Border Router may also be used. Aqara says a Thread-enabled iPhone running iOS 18 or later can be paired with the lock, but that should not be interpreted as meaning every iPhone independently supplies the full Apple Home hub experience.

During initial pairing, keep Bluetooth enabled and place the lock reasonably close to the Thread-enabled Matter controller. Aqara recommends approximately 5 metres, or about 3 metres when walls or other obstacles intervene. The exact app labels can change with software updates, so the manual’s general sequence is more reliable than treating any screen layout as permanent.
Turning on approach unlocking
Once Apple Home has created the key, open the iPhone’s Wallet app, select the home key, and enable Unlock on Approach. Aqara also refers to the related Apple control as Express Mode during setup. If the Wallet option is disabled, the U400 will not provide its advertised hands-free experience.
Other ways to unlock the U400
UWB is optional, not the lock’s only access method. The U400 also supports:
- Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock
- Fingerprint recognition
- Permanent, offline, and scheduled passcodes
- Aqara app control
- Voice control through supported ecosystems
- NFC cards, sold separately
- Mechanical keys
- Automations and supported remote access
Aqara says the fingerprint reader stores up to 50 fingerprints and can recognize a fingerprint in as little as 0.3 seconds, with a stated recognition rate of up to 98.6%. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. A physical key remains an important fallback, particularly for battery failure or electronics problems.
Aqara’s current product information also lists Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key when the U400 is connected through Samsung SmartThings. The CES announcement described that support as planned for the first quarter of 2026; the current product page presents it as supported.
Matter support does not mean UWB support everywhere
The U400’s Matter-over-Thread connection broadens its usefulness beyond Apple Home. Aqara lists compatibility with:

- Apple Home
- Google Home
- Amazon Alexa
- Samsung SmartThings
- Home Assistant
- Other Matter-compatible platforms
Each platform still needs an appropriate Thread-enabled Matter Controller. “No proprietary hub required” should not be confused with “no hub or controller required.” Basic local Bluetooth access may not need a hub, while Matter integration, Apple Home operation, and remote functions can depend on the controller and network configuration.
There is also a major feature-parity limitation: Aqara’s FAQ says UWB unlocking is currently supported only in Apple Home. A Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant user may be able to operate the lock through ordinary Matter controls, but should not assume that the Apple-style hands-free approach feature is available in those ecosystems.

Battery, durability, and emergency access
The U400 has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, USB-C charging, a low-battery alert at 20%, and an emergency USB-C charging port. Aqara states up to six months per charge, although actual life will vary with usage. Apple’s listing for the Deluxe Kit shows seven months, so Aqara’s own six-month estimate is the safer primary figure.
If the battery runs flat, the lock can be powered temporarily from a power bank or compatible USB-C phone, or opened with the mechanical key. Owners should treat charging as part of routine maintenance rather than waiting for the emergency port to become necessary.
Other listed hardware features include Bluetooth 5.0, an integrated gyroscope for auto-lock behavior, a rekeyable physical cylinder, IP65 exterior protection, and BHMA certification. These specifications do not remove the need to confirm that the lock suits the particular door and deadbolt mechanism.
Security and privacy considerations
Aqara says UWB signals are encrypted and timestamped under IEEE 802.15.4z, with the aim of making spoofing or relay attacks extremely difficult. That is the company’s technical explanation, not an independent security audit of the complete lock, software, installation, and ecosystem.

- EASY INSTALL: Install in minutes with just a screwdriver, no hardwiring required; Snap ‘n Stay design helps keep the lock on the door so both hands are free; fits standard doors with 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in door thickness and 2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in backset
The phone or watch becomes an important access credential. Owners should promptly remove lost devices, manage shared home keys carefully, use strong passcodes, and retain a controlled physical-key fallback. Passcodes, NFC cards, mechanical keys, remote access, and connected accounts each create different access and management considerations. Remote unlocking also depends on the connected ecosystem and network setup.
Installation issues to check before buying
The U400 is not guaranteed to be a universal drop-in replacement. Before ordering, verify:
- Existing deadbolt dimensions and backset
- Door thickness and available interior clearance
- Whether the bolt moves freely before installation
- Whether the door closes and latches without pushing or pulling
- Clearance for the larger interior smart-lock housing
- Whether the door uses a standard deadbolt rather than a mortise, multipoint, rim-cylinder, or other nonstandard mechanism
After installation, auto-lock problems may be caused by alignment or bolt friction rather than software. Aqara’s manual recommends adding the lock to Aqara Home and recalibrating it when automatic locking does not work correctly.

UWB does not unlock on approach
Check the iPhone or Watch model, iOS or watchOS version, Bluetooth, Apple Home pairing, the Thread-capable home hub, the correct Apple account, and Wallet → home key → Unlock on Approach. Confirm that you are approaching from outside and that a shared key was correctly issued to a family member or guest.

Check that a Thread-enabled Matter Controller is present, the lock and controller are close enough, Bluetooth is enabled, and the pairing code is current. Aqara says the original Matter code may expire after the lock connects to an Aqara controller; generate a new code in Aqara Home if necessary. Also check that the phone and controller are on the expected Wi-Fi network.

Price, editions, and availability
Aqara’s United States store lists the standard U400 at $269.99. Aqara announced availability in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore through combinations of its official store, Amazon, Best Buy, Apple retail and online stores in selected markets, and other retailers.
Listings may refer to the standard U400, U400 Kit, or U400 Deluxe Kit. They are not necessarily identical packages or finishes. Apple’s listing is specifically for the U400 Deluxe Kit, so its included accessories and specifications should not automatically be applied to every U400 listing.
The practical cost can exceed the lock’s sticker price. Buyers without a compatible Thread-enabled Apple home hub may need to add one, and NFC cards are sold separately. The U400 can also integrate with Aqara products such as the G410 doorbell camera, but adding cameras or an Aqara hub only makes sense for buyers building a broader security system.
Who should buy the Aqara U400?
The U400 is a strong fit for an Apple Home household that already owns a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and specifically wants to approach the door with groceries, luggage, children, or wet or gloved hands. It is also attractive to buyers who want several fallback methods—Home Key, fingerprint, passcodes, NFC, app control, and a physical key—in one deadbolt.
It is a poor fit for Android users seeking immediate hands-free UWB unlocking, buyers unwilling to add a Thread-capable Apple home hub, renters who cannot replace their deadbolt, and anyone looking only for the least expensive keypad or fingerprint lock. It is also unsuitable when the door has unusual alignment, multipoint hardware, limited interior clearance, or other installation constraints.
Compared with a conventional Apple Home Key lock, the U400’s premium is primarily buying convenience: no tap at the door. Compared with a fingerprint or keypad lock, it offers a more seamless experience for compatible Apple users but introduces greater dependence on Apple hardware, Wallet configuration, Thread networking, and battery maintenance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For construction and renovation projects, specify the door hardware early. Confirm the deadbolt format, door clearances, electrical and network assumptions, and who will manage credentials after handover. A smart lock should be selected as part of the complete entry system—not treated as an interchangeable finish accessory.
For an independent perspective, Tom’s Guide reported a positive UWB approach-unlock experience and considered the U400 best suited to Apple users, while noting that performance should not be generalized to every door, device, or installation.
