Most people mean the same rotating-drum delivery vehicle when they say “cement truck” or “concrete truck.” The more precise name is a concrete truck, ready-mix truck, or truck mixer: it usually carries fresh concrete, not cement alone. Cement is one ingredient in concrete, alongside water and aggregates such as sand and stone.
What does a “cement truck” actually carry?
The familiar truck with a rotating drum usually carries ready-mixed concrete to a construction site. Concrete is a mixture of cement, water, and fine and coarse aggregates; cement is the binding ingredient, not another name for the finished mixture. The American Cement Association explains the distinction in its overview of cement applications.
“Cement truck” is common informal speech, but it can be imprecise. If you mean the drum-equipped vehicle delivering fresh concrete, “concrete truck,” “ready-mix truck,” or “truck mixer” makes the load or function clearer.
Why does the truck have a rotating drum?
The drum and its spiral blades help mix or agitate the concrete and move it toward the discharge opening. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association describes how the blades mix as the drum turns in one direction and help discharge the load when it turns in reverse; truck-mounted rotating-drum mixers deliver the overwhelming majority of ready-mixed concrete to construction sites. Concrete is typically discharged through a rear chute.

Is the concrete always mixed in the truck?
No. The truck’s drum does not necessarily perform all the mixing. Caltrans identifies three ways concrete may be prepared and transported:
- Central-mixed: Fully mixed at a stationary plant, then transported in an agitator truck or other approved equipment.
- Shrink-mixed: Partly mixed at the plant and completed in the truck.
- Transit-mixed: Fully mixed in a truck mixer.
These distinctions are described in the Caltrans Concrete Technology Manual, Chapter 4. ASTM’s C94/C94M specification covers ready-mixed concrete supplied fresh and unhardened and includes stationary mixers and truck mixers within its scope; it does not establish that everyday speakers must use one particular phrase.

When does “cement truck” mean a different vehicle?
In some contexts, a cement truck is a bulk carrier transporting dry cement powder to a concrete plant. That is a different job and payload from a mixer truck delivering fresh concrete to a construction site. The distinction is clearest when you name what the vehicle carries and where it is going.
| Vehicle meant | Typical payload | Job | Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk cement carrier | Dry cement powder | Transporting an ingredient to a concrete plant | Bulk storage and discharge system |
| Concrete or ready-mix truck | Fresh concrete | Delivering concrete for placement at a site | Rotating mixer or agitator drum, commonly with a rear chute |
Because usage varies by context, the phrase “cement truck” alone may not tell you which vehicle is meant. A manufacturer’s discussion of the distinction also contrasts bulk cement transport with ready-mixed concrete delivery: SANY Group’s comparison.
