In Canada, choosing one means balancing the facade you want with insulation, material, local wind exposure, warranty and installation. Manufacturer R-values apply to specific door constructions—not to the energy performance of the entire garage.
What makes a garage door “carriage house” style?
The term describes the appearance, not necessarily the way the door opens. Traditional carriage doors swung outward; modern carriage-house models generally use overhead operation, combining the historic look with the convenience of a sectional garage door. Clopay’s buying guide explains the style, while its Coachman collection pairs a carriage-house appearance with modern overhead operation.
Common visual choices include distinctive panel patterns, wood-tone finishes, windows and decorative hardware. Availability varies by model, so check the specifications for the exact door rather than assuming a feature shown in a photograph is included.
Compare materials and construction
Carriage-style designs are available in several constructions. Steel can provide the base for a painted or wood-look finish; some products add composite overlays for depth and texture. Real wood offers a different material and finishing choice. For example, Clopay’s Coachman collection is described as steel with a composite overlay, while Richards-Wilcox Canada lists steel and overlay models as well as its cedar-overlay Rockwood door.

Compare the maker’s care instructions and written warranty for the specific construction and finish. A wood-look overlay and a real-wood door are not interchangeable maintenance choices, and warranty coverage can vary between products.
Choose insulation for how the garage is used
Insulation options differ by manufacturer, model and door build. Garaga lists carriage-style choices from non-insulated construction to R-16 and recommends polyurethane-insulated construction for a heated garage. Its North Hatley product page describes the available constructions.
Clopay lists R-values from 6.5 to 18.4 across Coachman configurations. Its options include 2-inch Intellicore polyurethane, 2-inch polystyrene and 1-3/8-inch polystyrene. A 2023 Clopay catalog excerpt reports calculated door-section values of R-18.4 for 2-inch Intellicore polyurethane, R-12.9 for 1-3/8-inch Intellicore polyurethane, R-6.5 for 1-3/8-inch polystyrene and R-0.0 for basic single-layer steel. The catalog says those calculated door-section values follow DASMA TDS-163; confirm current specifications for the model you are quoting. Clopay catalog excerpt.
Richards-Wilcox Canada reports R-18 for Briarcrest and Echo Ridge XL, R-19 for cedar-overlay Rockwood and R-12 for a 1-3/8-inch polyurethane option. These are manufacturer-stated, product-specific values, not an independent comparison. See the Richards-Wilcox product listings.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen comparing quotes, match the door construction and its stated R-value rather than comparing numbers detached from model and insulation type. Consider whether the garage is heated or shares a wall or space with living areas. An R-value for the door section does not describe the performance of the complete garage, which also depends on other parts of the building.
Check windows, hardware and wind reinforcement
Windows and decorative hardware can change the door’s appearance, but their styles and availability depend on the selected model. Ask the dealer to specify the chosen window design, hardware and finish in the quote. Clopay lists decorative hardware and window options for Coachman; the manufacturer’s product page also describes a replaceable vinyl bottom seal.

Some models offer reinforcement for high-wind regions. Clopay says WindCode reinforcement is available on the Coachman collection, but that does not establish which configuration is appropriate for a particular property. Ask a local dealer or building authority to confirm the applicable wind-load requirements and the door configuration for your address.

Ask for the written warranty that applies to the precise door, finish and construction you are considering. Garaga describes limited lifetime warranties that vary by construction; Richards-Wilcox describes a Limited Life-Timer warranty. Read the terms for coverage and exclusions, and check whether the local dealer services the product.

Installation affects how the door operates and whether the specified product is properly fitted. Use the installation and maintenance documents for the chosen model, and ask about the installer’s experience and service coverage. Coachman’s product page links installation and maintenance materials; Richards-Wilcox also emphasizes the importance of installation quality.

Current, comparable Canadian installed prices are not established by the available product information. Clopay notes that price depends on materials, insulation and local market pricing. Request local written quotes and compare them on the same basis:
- Door model, size, material and finish
- Insulation type and stated R-value
- Windows, decorative hardware and other selected options
- Wind reinforcement, if required for the property
- Removal and disposal of the existing door
- Installation scope and any opener work included
- Warranty terms, service and applicable taxes
This makes it easier to distinguish a lower base-door price from a quote that includes the options and installation work you need.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist before requesting quotes
- Choose the appearance you want: panel pattern, finish, windows and hardware.
- Decide whether the garage will be heated and identify any connection to living space; use that to compare model-specific insulation options.
- Ask which material and construction the quote specifies, and request the written care guidance and warranty.
- Have a local dealer or building authority confirm wind requirements for the address and identify any needed reinforcement.
- Request itemized quotes that include comparable options, removal, installation, opener work if applicable, warranty and taxes.
