Start by assessing residents’ mobility, transfers, equipment and assistance needs, then coordinate the building work with the applicable regulations and project-specific design advice. Ramps, wider doors and bathroom adaptations can each help, but none solves the whole route on its own.
Start with residents and map the whole route
Before deciding what to build, establish what residents need to do and where the existing building makes it difficult. A useful assessment considers how people walk or use mobility aids, how they transfer between a chair and another surface, and whether they need assistance with personal care. Needs can differ from one resident to another, so a single feature or layout should not be assumed to work for everyone.

NHS guidance for home adaptations describes an occupational therapist visiting, asking what is difficult and walking through the home with the person to understand their needs. That is a useful assessment principle for a care home, but it is not a care-home construction specification. In a care setting, involve the appropriate occupational therapist or accessibility professional alongside the facilities team and the people who understand residents’ day-to-day support.

Record the barriers and the task each change is intended to support. For example, distinguish arriving at the building from getting over the threshold; passing through a doorway from turning beyond it; and reaching a shower from transferring into and using it. The design team can then coordinate the work around residents’ needs instead of treating each alteration as an independent item.
Plan entrance ramps for the actual site
An outdoor ramp may be one part of an accessible entrance. Its design has to respond to the building and site, as well as to the people expected to use it. NHS home-adaptation guidance includes outdoor ramps as a possible adaptation, and English building guidance sets a framework for access to non-dwelling buildings. Neither point supplies a universal ramp design for a particular care home.
Ask the design team to resolve the site conditions
Have a competent designer assess the approach and entrance together. The brief should make clear how people will reach the ramp, enter the building and continue along the internal route. The project team needs to establish the ramp geometry, landings, surface and any handrail arrangement from the current applicable guidance and site-specific design advice. Do not select dimensions or a gradient from an unsourced rule of thumb.
Include the entrance threshold and the space immediately beyond it in the assessment. A ramp that reaches the door does not, by itself, show that a resident can pass through and continue onward. Check the interaction between the ramp, entrance, door operation and internal circulation as one design problem. If the proposed arrangement cannot support the journey identified in the assessment, the team should revisit the layout rather than treating the ramp as a complete solution.
Make the intended use clear in the construction brief
Describe who is expected to use the route, what mobility aids or assistance may be involved, and where the ramp begins and ends. Ask the designer to identify the applicable technical basis and to coordinate the proposal with building-control requirements. The official sources establish that ramps are a recognized adaptation and that reasonable access is required in relevant English non-dwelling buildings; they do not confirm a particular ramp’s compliance without project-specific assessment.

- Wide Range of Applications: portable door threshold ramps can be used at front doors of home or garage steps and various cars to solve problems that may happen to wheelchairs, unloading trolleys, baby carriages, pet dogs, scooters and elderly people walking.
Assess doorways and circulation as a connected alteration
Widening a doorway can help a resident pass between spaces, but the opening is only one part of the route. The door leaf and its swing, the usable clear opening, the corridor geometry and the space on either side affect how the doorway works in practice. The layout also needs to be considered in relation to the mobility aids and assistance identified during assessment.
English Disabled Facilities Grant guidance names wider doors as an example of an adaptation. It does not establish a clear-opening width for this care-home project. The design team should determine the dimensions required for the particular building and intended use from the current applicable guidance rather than assuming a standard figure.

Coordinate the alteration before construction
Ask the design team to check the proposed opening, door operation and approach from both sides, and to consider how the door connects to the next part of the route. Widening a doorway can affect adjoining construction and the operation of the space around it; the project must establish the consequences for the specific building rather than assume the change is limited to replacing a door leaf.
Coordinate the alteration with the building’s fire strategy and building-control requirements. Fire-safety coordination is a practical project consideration, not a substitute for obtaining the specific requirements that apply to the site. Agree the design and approvals with the relevant professionals before work begins, especially where a change to an opening affects the surrounding layout or building fabric.
Design accessible bathrooms around transfers and assistance
An accessible bathroom is not simply a standard room with a different fixture. The layout should respond to how residents approach, position themselves, transfer and receive personal care. It also has to work within the constraints of the room and building. The right arrangement therefore depends on the residents’ needs and the care tasks the space is expected to support.

NHS adaptation guidance gives walk-in showers and grab rails as examples. English DFG delivery guidance also lists level-access showers, wet rooms and wash-and-dry toilets among possible adaptations. These examples show the kinds of changes that may be considered; they do not prescribe a care-home layout, fixture model or set of bathroom dimensions.
Specify the bathroom as a whole
During assessment and design, consider the route into the bathroom, the space available to position a mobility aid, and the way a resident and any assistant will carry out the intended task. The team should also decide which facilities and equipment are appropriate for the residents using the room. A fixture choice cannot make up for a layout that does not support the necessary approach, transfer or assistance.
Where grab rails are considered, their location and installation should follow the individual assessment and the bathroom design. NHS guidance identifies them as a possible adaptation, not as a universally suitable product or a replacement for a properly planned accessible bathroom. Do not assume that a retail rail, without regard to the resident and installation, is suitable for every person or situation.
Check the complete route to and through the room
Review the bathroom in context: a resident must be able to reach its doorway, pass through it, position themselves for the intended use and receive any necessary assistance. That review connects the bathroom design back to the corridor and door work rather than leaving the room as a standalone package. Confirm the detailed layout and technical requirements with the project’s competent design team; no exact bathroom dimensions or fixture models are established by the cited guidance described here.
Use the right regulatory framework for the project
This article addresses England because the clearest regulatory detail here is English. A care home is generally a non-dwelling building, so the relevant starting point is Approved Document M, Volume 2, for buildings other than dwellings, together with the applicable Building Regulations requirements. Approved Documents provide guidance on compliance; they are not a site-specific design approval.

Requirement M1 of the Building Regulations 2010 states: “Reasonable provision must be made for people to—(a) gain access to; and(b) use, the building and its facilities.” The quotation is the regulation’s wording. The requirement concerns both access to a building and use of it and its facilities, which is why a project should consider the journey beyond the entrance as well as the individual upgrades.
The GOV.UK Approved Document M page records a Volume 2 amendment in May 2024 and an update on 1 October 2024. Check the latest applicable edition and the requirements relevant to the particular work when developing the brief. Do not treat a general explanation or an example adaptation as confirmation that a proposed design meets the regulations.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate rules and funding arrangements. The English guidance should not be applied to a project elsewhere in the UK as though the regulatory framework were identical. Confirm the requirements with the appropriate authorities and competent professionals in the nation where the care home is located.

Accessibility work often crosses several parts of a building, so establish who is responsible for bringing the route together. The care home’s facilities team can explain the building and its operation; an occupational therapist or other appropriate professional can help identify resident needs; and the design team can develop the technical proposals and coordinate them with the relevant compliance process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Define the residents’ tasks. Document the mobility, transfer, equipment and assistance needs the upgrade is intended to address.
- Map the route. Trace the approach, entrance, internal circulation, doorways and bathroom so that dependencies between work areas are visible.
- Develop the design brief. Describe the intended use and ask the competent design team to identify the current guidance and project-specific requirements for each alteration.
- Coordinate the work packages. Review entrance, door and bathroom proposals together, including the fire-strategy and building-control considerations relevant to the project.
- Confirm the required approvals before work starts. Establish the applicable process for the building and proposed work with the relevant professionals and authorities.
This sequence is a project-planning approach, not a substitute for technical design or statutory approval. The official guidance provides a framework; whether a particular ramp, opening or bathroom layout is appropriate depends on the building, work and intended use.

- Transition Ramp for Doorway: This rubber threshold ramp allows for a smooth transition for doorways. The rubber door ramp ensures you and your loved one walk up and down the threshold ramp securely and efficiently, especially for those who have difficulty independently accessing a home or uneven levels of ground.
- 3" Rise Beveled Edges: Size: 35.5" L x 17.7" W x 3" H/ 90.2 x 45 x 7.5 cm. Fit for maximizing 26.8"/ 68 cm width wheelchair to pass. The solid rubber ramp is built with beveled edges for a smooth approach to raise surface from all sides. With this smart design, the threshold ramp is perfect for any door, entryway, or surface that requires an easy transition over an obstacle.
- Rubber & Non-slip Surface: Door ramp for the wheelchair is a durable rubber construction, which is rust-proof and scratch-proof for indoor and outdoor usage. As the recycled rubber, it has no pungent odors but a slight rubber smell. In addition, a grooved tread surface for superior traction reduces the risk of slipping.
- 2200LBS Load Capacity: A solid door threshold rubber can support up to 2200lbs/ 1000 kg. Therefore, it can provide stability and security to the pass-by of skate and wheelchairs, and scooters. Made of industrial-grade rubber, the curb ramps for driveways also allow household cars to pass through and will not easily deformation.
- Installation & Application: One-piece design ramp threshold needs no tools to assemble and dismantle; the lightweight ramp is for mobility solutions from semi-permanent ramps to portable ramps temporary. It is an excellent choice for access ramps for the curb of the home, garden, garage, and barn.
Check funding without assuming care-home eligibility
Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) guidance for England describes support for eligible disabled people to live safely and independently at home. Its examples include ramps, wider doors, level-access showers, wet rooms and wash-and-dry toilets. This makes the guidance useful for understanding the types of adaptations it covers, but it does not establish that an operating care home can automatically claim DFG for capital works.
The guidance also discusses wider social-care capital-project uses in certain circumstances agreed locally. That should not be read as a general entitlement for an individual care home. Funding eligibility depends on the project and the relevant local arrangements, so ask the appropriate local authority about the specific proposal before making a funding assumption or committing to a budget on that basis.
DFG is a devolved policy and grant. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements, so an English DFG explanation does not determine eligibility elsewhere in the UK. Check the relevant nation and local authority for the applicable route.

What a useful upgrade brief should contain
A clear brief gives the project team enough context to connect the building work to resident use. It also helps avoid treating a named adaptation as a complete specification. Include the following information where it is available:
- The routes residents need to travel, from the approach and entrance to the relevant facilities.
- The mobility aids, transfer requirements and assistance needs the work is intended to support.
- The barriers identified at ramps, doorways, circulation spaces and bathrooms.
- The intended tasks at each location, including how residents will enter, position themselves and receive assistance.
- The need for the designer to confirm current technical guidance, building-control requirements and coordination with the fire strategy.
- The local authority or other funding body to consult if grant support is being considered.
For each proposed alteration, ask the design team to explain what problem it addresses and how it connects to the next part of the route. A project is more likely to address the real access problem when entrance, internal movement and personal-care facilities are assessed together, rather than approved as unrelated items.
