Singapore’s green skyscraper is CapitaSpring, a 280-metre mixed-use tower at 88 Market Street. Its signature Green Oasis is a four-level, 35-metre-high open-air garden spanning Levels 17 to 20—not the separate rooftop garden on Level 51. Visitors can access the gardens during designated public hours, subject to restrictions that can change.

What is the green skyscraper in Singapore?

CapitaSpring combines offices, serviced residences, retail and food uses in Singapore’s Central Business District. Its Green Oasis sits between office floors and serviced residences, turning part of the tower’s interior into a planted, open-air promenade. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) describes it as a 35-metre-high garden across four connected levels, linked by a spiralling staircase. CapitaLand’s CapitaSpring overview and URA’s 2024 guidebook identify the building and garden.

How the Green Oasis is designed

The Green Oasis is designed as a vertical tropical landscape, with planting inspired by rainforest layers: emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor. Its spaces include an amphitheatre, a yoga alcove, work pods and a café, according to the National Parks Board (NParks). The design fact sheet from CapitaLand gives the garden’s dimensions and planting figures; these describe the Green Oasis, not every planted area in the building.

Green Oasis feature Reported figure or detail Source and scope
Landscaped area 42,900 square feet CapitaLand’s 2022 design fact sheet, Green Oasis
Plants More than 38,000 CapitaLand’s 2022 design fact sheet, Green Oasis
Plant species More than 70 CapitaLand’s 2022 design fact sheet, Green Oasis
Trees Over 160, selected to grow 4 to 10 metres tall CapitaLand’s 2022 design fact sheet, Green Oasis
Spiral walkway 312 metres long CapitaLand’s 2022 design fact sheet, Green Oasis

Those figures differ from NParks’ broader profile of the development: NParks reports more than 80,000 plants from over 130 species across CapitaSpring, with more than half indigenous to Singapore. The wider-development total should not be read as the count for the Green Oasis alone. See the CapitaSpring Design Fact Sheet and NParks’ CapitaSpring profile.

Planting for conditions at height

Sunlight, wind and humidity vary across a tall building. NParks says plant selection for CapitaSpring accounted for sunlight intensity and exposure duration, wind and humidity; species that tolerate lower light were used in sheltered areas. Trees also need specific safeguards and continuing care: NParks describes anchoring at the root ball, temporary tripod staking while trees establish, thinning crowns to reduce wind resistance and rain-loaded foliage, and regular inspections.

How the rooftop garden differs

The Level 51 Sky Garden is a different space from the Levels 17–20 Green Oasis. It combines rooftop public space and views with an urban farm. CapitaLand reports that the farm covers 5,000 square feet and supplies the building’s restaurants. URA’s 2024 guide describes over 150 species of fruits, vegetables and flowers at the farm, with produce served to diners at the rooftop restaurants. NParks reports that bees and other pollinators have been observed at this elevated garden. These descriptions refer to the rooftop garden and farm, not the Green Oasis. Sources: CapitaLand, URA and NParks.

Why greenery is built into Singapore towers

CapitaSpring is an example of skyrise greenery in a dense city, where planting can be incorporated into roofs, terraces and building façades as well as ground-level landscapes. URA’s Landscaping for Urban Spaces and High-Rises (LUSH) programme requires new developments to replace greenery displaced from a site with on-ground and skyrise greenery, such as roof gardens, sky terraces, planter boxes and green walls. URA identifies urban-heat mitigation, stormwater management and biodiversity support among the benefits of the policy. That context does not mean every feature of CapitaSpring’s design is a direct LUSH requirement. See URA’s City in Nature policy information.
