Canutillo ISD marked a construction milestone at Deanna Davenport Elementary on August 20, 2026: crews lifted the campus’s final structural beam into place during a public topping-off ceremony. That is the district’s $73.9 million project—not the separate $106.8 million Jose J. Alderete Middle School project. The two campuses have different budgets, scopes and schedules.
What milestone did Canutillo ISD celebrate?
The August 20 ceremony marked the placement of Davenport Elementary’s final structural beam. Attendees had an opportunity to sign the beam before it was lifted into position. Canutillo ISD describes topping off as the completion of a building’s structural framework and the transition into the final stage of construction.
The ceremony was a progress marker, not a report that the school was finished or open. The district said Davenport was on budget and on schedule at the time of its announcement; those are the district’s project-status statements, not an independent audit of cost or schedule.
Which campus is the $106 million project?
The approximately $106 million figure belongs to the new Jose J. Alderete Middle School, not Davenport Elementary. Canutillo ISD’s 2024 Bond Program project listing gives Alderete a budget of $106,824,603. The district describes it as a 165,000-square-foot replacement campus at a new location along Resler Drive, intended to bring the school closer to growing Northwest El Paso neighborhoods. What the milestone does—and does not—confirm
A topping-off event confirms that the project reached a structural-framework milestone, as described by the district and its contractor. It does not by itself establish that interior work is complete, that the campus has opened, or that the final cost and delivery date have been independently verified. The district’s August 20 update said Davenport was on budget and on schedule and named fall 2027 as its planned opening.
Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego connected the ceremony to the bond commitment, saying the district was “on budget” and “on schedule” and would provide regular updates. Those words describe the district’s position at the time of the announcement. Canutillo ISD Davenport Elementary announcement
