Sometimes people choose to wash a garment labeled “Dry Clean Only,” but that label is a warning: under U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance, it means the item cannot be safely washed. Home washing is a gamble, not a guaranteed workaround. If you decide to accept that risk, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recommends cool-water hand washing—not assuming a gentle machine cycle will be safe. A garment marked “Do not wash” should not be washed at home.
What “Dry Clean Only” means
The FTC says manufacturers may use the “Dryclean Only” instruction when they have evidence that washing will damage the garment. The warning applies to the finished garment, not just its main fabric: its lining, trim, buttons, closures, dye and construction can all affect how it responds to water. That is why a fabric name alone—such as cotton, silk or wool—cannot establish that the whole item is safe to wash. Dye may run, trim or buttons may be harmed, and the garment may shrink. A care label that says “Do not wash” is not permission to try a gentler method. The FTC’s care-labeling rule recognizes that available cleaning methods can harm garments and requires care instructions and warnings. - Stop if the label says “Do not wash.” Home steps do not override that instruction.
- Inspect the complete garment. Check the lining, trim, buttons, closures, dye and any detachable pieces as well as the outer fabric.
- Use a professional cleaner when the outcome matters or you are unsure. Ask about the garment’s construction and which cleaning method is appropriate.
- If you choose to proceed despite “Dry Clean Only,” accept that damage is possible. ACI’s fallback suggestion is cool-water hand washing at your own risk. ACI: Ask ACI—When Clothes Are Really Dry Clean Only
If the care label allows hand washing
The steps below are specific guidance for wool garments whose care instructions allow hand washing; they are not a way to make a dry-clean-only item safe to wash. Do not apply the wool temperature or soak time to other fabrics, and do not use these steps to override a label.
- Check the label and garment. Follow the care instructions and stop if they prohibit washing. Inspect construction and components before immersing the item.
- Prepare the wool garment. Turn it inside out. Woolmark advises using clean lukewarm water around 30°C (86°F) and a mild detergent. Woolmark: How to wash wool
- Soak and rinse gently. For wool, Woolmark advises soaking for about 10 minutes, then rinsing thoroughly—first in lukewarm water and then in cold water. Do not rub, pull or wring the garment.
- Remove water without twisting. Press excess water out carefully. For sweaters, ACI advises rolling the item in a towel and pressing gently; then reshape it. ACI: Sweater Care
- Dry knitwear flat. Reshape it on a pale, lint-free towel and leave it away from direct heat and sunlight. Woolmark cautions that hanging wet knitwear can stretch it. Woolmark: How to dry a wool sweater
What detergent can—and cannot—do
A mild detergent formulated for delicates or wool is appropriate for hand-wash care when the garment’s instructions allow it. It does not neutralize the risks of washing a dry-clean-only garment: it cannot guarantee that the dye, trim, lining or shape will withstand water.
