Yes—if your electric vehicle and home equipment are designed to work together. An EV cannot safely power a house simply by plugging it into a wall outlet. A vehicle-to-home (V2H) system needs compatible vehicle and power-conversion equipment, a way to isolate the home from the utility grid during an outage, and an electrical installation that meets local rules.
What vehicle-to-home power means
V2H sends energy from an EV battery to a home through equipment that converts the vehicle’s electricity into household AC power and manages the connection. The vehicle stores energy as direct current; the system coordinates with the car, supplies the home, and—when the grid is down—isolates the home from utility lines.

These capabilities are related, but they are not interchangeable. The broader term V2X covers bidirectional energy transfer; Puget Sound Energy (PSE) describes V2H as the case in which an EV supplies a home.
What equipment a home needs
A V2H installation is a system, not just a charger. Depending on the manufacturer’s design, it may include a bidirectional EV charger or EVSE, an inverter to convert DC battery power to household AC, an islanding controller or transfer equipment, and a dedicated circuit. The inverter’s location varies by system. The home may also need electrical-panel work or other service upgrades.

During an outage, the isolation equipment prevents the home from energizing utility lines. That protects utility workers and helps ensure the backup system operates as intended. A qualified installer must confirm the equipment combination, circuits, and service capacity for the specific home.
Which vehicles can support V2H?
Compatibility is specific to the vehicle, trim, model year, software, market, and paired home equipment. A manufacturer’s list of eligible vehicles is not a promise that any bidirectional charger will work with them. Confirm the complete combination with the automaker and installer before buying equipment or beginning construction.

- GM Energy: Its V2H-capable information lists certain Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles, including the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV and various 2024–2026 model-year vehicles. The described setup requires a PowerShift Charger, V2H Enablement Kit, an eligible vehicle with sufficient charge, a properly equipped home, and appropriate grid interconnection. GM says some eligible 2024 vehicles may need a dealer or over-the-air software update.
- BMW: BMW’s U.S. FAQ specifies a compatible BMW EV, Wallbox Professional, Home Backup System Professional components, a BMW ID, and the My BMW App.
- Kia: Kia’s U.S. V2H information describes the Quasar 2 with additional equipment and identifies the 2024 and 2025 EV9 as supported. It notes that permits, panel upgrades, and utility approval may be required depending on jurisdiction.
- Tesla: Tesla’s January 2026 V2H explainer describes the system components and points to its Powershare system. Confirm support for the exact vehicle and whether the intended configuration backs up the whole home or selected loads.
These are examples, not a complete or permanent compatibility list. The California Energy Commission’s market roadmap describes the 2013 Nissan Leaf as the first fully bidirectional-capable EV launched in the U.S. and names commercial examples including the Kia EV9, Lucid Air, Ford F-150, and Tesla Cybertruck. That roadmap is a dated market snapshot, not confirmation that each named vehicle supports the same V2H configuration.
How long can an EV power a house?
There is no fixed outage-runtime figure for “an EV.” A rough upper-bound estimate divides usable vehicle energy by the home’s daily electricity use:

Approximate days = usable vehicle energy (kWh) ÷ daily home use (kWh/day)
Tesla illustrates the calculation with a 90 kWh battery and a household using 30 kWh per day: the result is about three days if the battery starts full. This is an example, not a measured outcome or guarantee. Use the vehicle’s usable energy, rather than its advertised gross battery capacity, and use the home’s actual consumption from utility bills or interval data.

Real backup time can be shorter because of conversion losses, cold or hot weather, the starting charge level, a reserve kept for driving, and the appliances being used. The number of backed-up circuits also matters. Solar may extend backup only if the equipment is configured to operate and recharge in island mode; solar behavior during an outage is system-specific.
Check power output as well as energy capacity. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) indicate how much energy is available over time; kilowatts (kW) limit how much load can run at once. A system must also handle starting surges from equipment such as motors and compressors. Ask the manufacturer or installer for the system’s continuous and peak output and the circuits it can support.

How to plan a V2H installation
- Verify the vehicle: Ask the automaker to confirm V2H support for the exact model, trim, model year, market, software version, and intended operating mode.
- Have the home assessed: Ask a qualified electrician or approved installer to check service-panel capacity, proposed circuits, equipment location, and any required electrical work.
- Confirm the system design: Identify the compatible charger, inverter, gateway, and transfer or islanding equipment. Specify whether you want whole-home backup or selected circuits, and confirm the system’s continuous and peak output.
- Check local approvals: Contact the utility and permitting authority about permits, inspections, interconnection, export restrictions, and approved equipment. PSE describes a system review and approval process; its V2X program is demonstration-only and names the Ford F-150 Lightning and Kia EV9 for that demonstration.
- Require commissioning: Have the installer test the transfer and islanding functions and verify backup operation. Keep vehicle and equipment software current where the manufacturer requires it.
- Review reserve and warranty settings: Decide how much charge to retain for driving and check the vehicle warranty terms. PSE says systems include battery-protection controls but advises customers to check warranty coverage.
Do not assume a V2H system can support medical or other life-critical equipment. GM specifically says its cited kit is not recommended for medical devices; consult the device maker and the V2H system manufacturer, and arrange an appropriate independent backup where needed.
V2H versus an outage-only vehicle connection
Some emergency-power arrangements use vehicle outlets, an adapter or cable, and a transfer switch to supply selected home circuits. The Associated Press reported on July 22, 2026, that Ford offered an outage-only meter-connection method of this kind. It is distinct from Ford’s bidirectional Home Integration System: an outlet-based setup does not provide the same bidirectional operation. Do not treat a vehicle outlet or an extension cord as a substitute for a properly installed transfer system.
What V2H may cost
Installed cost depends on the equipment bundle, panel or service upgrades, circuits, installation labor, permits, utility requirements, and whether the home also needs a battery. Published prices for different types of systems are not directly comparable.

Before comparing proposals, ask each installer to state the supported vehicle and software, usable energy and continuous/peak output, backed-up circuits, transfer design, charge-reserve behavior, required permits, utility approvals, warranty terms, and total installed cost. Savings or payback cannot be established without local electricity rates, outage patterns, installation cost, and battery-use and warranty assumptions.
