The reviewed guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Mayo Clinic does not recommend it or identify salt as a way to improve indoor air quality. Use a humidifier with the water and cleaning instructions specified by its manufacturer, and monitor the roomโs humidity instead.
Why salt water is not a recommended humidifier fill
A room humidifier adds moisture to indoor air. The EPA recommends low-mineral water for ultrasonic and impeller units; it does not recommend salt water as a fill or treatment. Adding salt does not turn a humidifier into an air purifier, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish an indoor-air benefit from doing so. Follow the instructions for your particular unit rather than modifying its water.
Saline has a different use: Mayo Clinic says a saline spray or rinse may moisturize dry nasal passages. That is direct nasal care, not a way to humidify a room. See Mayo Clinicโs humidifier guidance.
Which humidifier types disperse fewer minerals?
The EPAโs comparison is specifically about minerals released into the airโnot an overall health ranking or a verdict on which type is best for every home. Its home humidifier guidance describes the types this way:

These distinctions do not replace a productโs own instructions. Cleaning, water choice, humidity control, and safe placement still matter for the specific model you use.
What water should you use?
For ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers, EPA recommends low-mineral water. It says distilled water will likely contain fewer minerals than most tap water. Spring, artesian, and mineral bottled waters have not been treated to remove minerals, so the word โbottledโ alone does not mean the water is low in minerals. Check your humidifierโs manual for its required water type and any manufacturer-recommended cartridges or filters.

How humid should a room be?
Keep indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent, the range in the EPAโs indoor-air guide. EPA also advises not to let indoor relative humidity exceed 50 percent. A room hygrometer or a humidifierโs built-in humidistat can help you monitor the level. Turn the output down if nearby surfaces become damp or condensation appears.
How to maintain a portable humidifier
Standing water and poor maintenance can undermine good water choices. EPA recommends this routine for portable units; also follow the makerโs directions for your model:

- Every third day: Clean the humidifier. Follow the manufacturerโs instructions for cleaning products and disinfectants.
