Usually, no. Cordless-tool batteries are designed as platform components, not universal power sources. A pack must be specifically approved for the tool, and the charger must be approved for that pack. Matching nominal voltage, sliding into the tool, or finding a third-party adapter listing does not establish electrical compatibility, safe operation, or warranty support.
Check the exact tool and battery model numbers in the tool maker’s current manual and compatibility chart. A documented adapter can be a legitimate exception, but only for the models and battery classes named by its manufacturer.

What “compatible” actually means
A cordless platform combines the battery pack, tool, charger, connector and control electronics. Compatibility means that the manufacturer has designed and tested those parts to work together—not merely that the pack produces a similar voltage or fits the rails.

The DEWALT DCF610 instruction manual states: “Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs.” It also warns that other packs can create injury and fire risk. That manual is for the DCF610 screwdriver, so use it as an illustration of the safety rule, not as a substitute for the current manual for a different tool.

Why a matching voltage or a physical fit is not enough
Voltage is a nominal label, not a complete specification
An “18 V” and a “20 V” label may describe different naming conventions for similar lithium-ion pack voltages, but the label does not tell you the permitted peak current, low-voltage cutoff, temperature limits, cell arrangement or communication protocol. A tool can demand current or protection behavior that another brand’s pack does not provide.
Modern packs and tools exchange information
Many systems use more than positive and negative power terminals. The tool may read temperature or identification signals; the charger may stop or reduce current based on pack feedback. Milwaukee’s battery FAQ describes compatibility within its own M12, M18 and MX FUEL families and explains that REDLINK electronics let the battery, charger and tool communicate to help protect against overcharging and overheating. Physical fit can conceal polarity and clearance problems
Rail dimensions and latches are only one part of the interface. Contacts may not align under load, a third-party shell may leave exposed terminals, and an adapter can interfere with a tool’s cooling or battery-release mechanism. Never file, bend, bridge or rewire contacts to force a fit.

Use the manufacturer-specified charger
Do not assume that a charger is interchangeable because its output voltage appears similar. The DCF610 manual says: “Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer.” A charger designed for a different pack can apply the wrong charging profile or fail to respond to the pack’s temperature and protection signals, creating the fire risk described in the manual.
Charge a cross-platform pack only when the battery maker explicitly identifies the charger as compatible. If you are using a documented adapter on a tool, the adapter does not automatically make the other brand’s charger acceptable; the pack still needs its own approved charger.
When an adapter is a valid exception
DEWALT’s DCA1820 example
The DEWALT DCA1820 product page describes an adapter that lets supported DEWALT 20V MAX batteries power most DEWALT 18V tools. This is a documented transition between two DEWALT platforms, not permission to put a different brand’s battery on a DEWALT tool.

There are important limits. DEWALT’s DCA1820 compatibility information lists tool exceptions and says the adapter should not be used with certain premium or greater-than-4-Ah batteries in the compact DC970 and DC759 drills. The chart and the tool manual control; a retailer’s “fits 18 V” wording does not.

- Confirm the adapter’s direction: battery platform to tool platform is not necessarily reversible.
- Match every exact tool model, battery model and capacity restriction in the manufacturer’s chart.
- Check whether the adapter disables fuel-gauge, temperature or overload functions.
- Use the approved charger for the battery, never the charger for the tool platform unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
- Keep the adapter, tool and battery within the manufacturer’s stated operating limits and service terms.
What about third-party cross-brand adapters?
A third-party adapter may physically connect two systems, but a marketplace listing is not a manufacturer approval. Unless the tool and battery makers publish model-specific support, you cannot assume that protection signaling, current limits, thermal monitoring or warranty coverage will work.
Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited’s safety notice dated January 2, 2026, says genuine Makita lithium-ion batteries are designed exclusively for Makita cordless tools and corresponding chargers and are not intended or authorized for other brands, adapters, modified devices or other non-approved equipment. It warns of reduced battery life and safety hazards and says such cases are not covered by its warranty or repair services. That statement is regional: it is a Hong Kong notice, and the page says its English text is a translation with the Chinese version prevailing if there is a discrepancy. Read the notice at Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited and check the terms that apply in your location.

Because there is no universal cross-brand compatibility chart from the manufacturers cited here, treat an unlisted adapter as unsupported unless the relevant manufacturers provide written, model-specific approval.

- Write down the complete model numbers. Record the tool, battery, charger and any proposed adapter. “18-volt battery” is not specific enough.
- Identify each platform. Note the brand’s platform name, nominal voltage system and generation. A brand can have several non-interchangeable families.
- Open the current tool manual. Look for the battery-pack, charger and approved-accessory sections. Follow the manual for the exact model rather than a similar-looking tool.
- Check the battery maker’s charger list. Confirm that the charger is specified for that battery model or family. If the charger is not listed, stop.
- Search the tool maker’s compatibility chart. An adapter is acceptable only when the chart names your tool and battery, including capacity and age restrictions.
- Read exclusions and operating limits. Look for compact-tool exceptions, premium-pack restrictions, maximum amp-hour ratings, temperature limits and functions that the adapter disables.
- Verify regional service terms. Warranty and repair policies can differ by country. Ask the manufacturer before relying on an unapproved combination on a job site.
If any step produces “not stated,” “not listed” or conflicting information, use the battery platform specified for the tool. Do not use voltage, connector shape or another user’s successful experience as a substitute for documentation.

If you already tried an unlisted combination
Stop the tool, remove the battery and let both parts return to room temperature before inspection. Do not continue if you notice unusual heat, odor, swelling, leaking, damaged terminals, arcing, error messages or rapid loss of charge. Do not put a suspect pack on any charger. Keep damaged lithium-ion batteries away from combustible materials and follow your local hazardous-battery disposal or manufacturer service instructions.

Record the exact models and what happened, then contact the tool or battery maker. They can tell you whether the event indicates a defective component and whether the combination affected service eligibility. Do not retry the test with a different adapter or by bypassing protection contacts.
Bottom line for construction work
Plan around battery platforms, not isolated voltage numbers. Buy or retain packs that the tool manufacturer names, charge them with the specified charger, and use an adapter only when the manufacturer documents that exact transition and its exclusions. A cross-brand adapter that merely fits may save the cost of another battery, but without model-specific approval it transfers compatibility, fire and warranty risk to you.
