1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNest Audio cannot currently serve as the normal TV-audio output for a Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, or Google TV Streamer. Google does support putting Nest Audio and compatible Chromecast devices in a speaker group for synchronized Cast-enabled audio, and using Nest Audio for voice control. That is different from routing every television sound—apps, menus, HDMI inputs, games, and live TV—through the speaker.
If you want genuine Google TV speaker output, Google’s current documented path uses a Google TV Streamer (4K) with one or two Google Home Speaker (2026) units, not Nest Audio (Google’s TV-audio instructions).

What “Nest Audio for Chromecast home theater” can mean
Three different features are often confused:
Cast music to Nest Audio and Chromecast together
A Google Home speaker group can synchronize compatible Cast devices for music and other Cast-enabled audio. This is useful for filling a room or home with music, but it is not a universal television sound system.
Control Chromecast by voice
After setup, Nest Audio can issue supported commands to a compatible Chromecast, such as play, pause, and other playback controls (Google Assistant Chromecast commands). Voice control does not make the Nest speaker the audio output.

Make Nest Audio the TV speaker
There is no official Google Home setting that turns Nest Audio into a standard Chromecast TV speaker. Google’s current direct TV-audio instructions name Google Home Speaker (2026) for Google TV Streamer and do not list Nest Audio.
Which devices and requirements matter?
The relevant hardware can include Nest Audio, Chromecast (2nd generation or newer), Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV HD or 4K, or Google TV Streamer (4K), plus a TV that supports Google Cast. Exact behavior varies by device generation, firmware, region, account, app, and network.
Google says setup requires the Google Home app on a compatible phone or tablet. Its published requirements list Android 9.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later (Chromecast and Google TV Streamer requirements). Put the phone, Nest Audio, and streaming device on reliable Wi-Fi and associate them with the same Google Account or Google Home. The Chromecast also needs a compatible HDMI/HDCP connection to the TV.
Recommended Free Tools
For 4K streaming, Google says the display must support 4K and recommends at least 20 Mbps internet service; HDR additionally requires an HDR-capable display. Those are video requirements, not evidence that Nest Audio supports TV audio output.

Set up Nest Audio and Chromecast for synchronized Cast audio
Create a speaker group
- Connect Nest Audio and the compatible Chromecast or Google TV device to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm that both devices use the same Google Account or are in the same Google Home.
- Open the Google Home app on a phone or tablet.
- Tap Add, then Speaker group.
- Select the Nest Audio and compatible streaming device.
- Tap Next, name the group, and tap Save.
Google says preset group creation is available in the mobile app, not Chrome. App labels can differ by version; an older Assistant help path is Settings → Devices, groups & rooms → Speaker groups (Google speaker groups; legacy Assistant path). Chromecast 1st generation is excluded from speaker-group creation.
Start playback
- In a Cast-enabled app, tap the Cast button and choose the speaker group.
- In Google Home, open the active media mini-player, use the Cast or device-selection control, and select multiple devices (multi-device playback).
- Use commands such as “Hey Google, play rock on [group name],” “Hey Google, pause,” or “Hey Google, set volume to 40 percent.”
Volume commands and touch controls do not necessarily set every group member to exactly the same level. Google notes that touch controls change the volume of the device being adjusted, and a voice command generally affects the device that heard it.
What you will not hear through this setup
| Content or function | What the speaker group establishes |
|---|---|
| Cast-enabled music or other supported audio | May play in synchronization on selected devices. |
| TV menus and system sounds | Not established as routed to Nest Audio. |
| Other HDMI sources, consoles, Blu-ray players, or live TV | Not a supported universal route. |
| Every app’s television audio | Depends on the app and Cast session; do not assume all audio is forwarded. |
| Guaranteed movie lip-sync | Not guaranteed. Group delay and echo can occur. |
| Surround decoding or a center dialogue channel | A speaker group is not a soundbar, AV receiver, or surround system. |
Stereo pair versus speaker group
Nest Audio stereo pair
Two matching Nest Audio speakers can be paired for left/right stereo music. Google recommends placing them about 4–8 feet apart on a solid, level surface (stereo-pair guidance). A stereo pair remains a music arrangement; it is not an officially supported Chromecast TV-audio pair.

A group can contain multiple compatible speakers, displays, and streaming devices for synchronized multi-device playback. It is designed for Cast sessions and whole-home audio, not for converting Nest Audio into a conventional television speaker.

Troubleshoot the supported speaker-group use case
Devices do not appear
- Check that the phone, Nest Audio, and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Verify the same Google Account and Google Home association.
- Make sure every device is powered on and assigned to a room.
- Update the Google Home app and restart the router and devices.
- Confirm the Chromecast is not 1st generation, which Google excludes from this feature.
The group saves but playback fails
- Remove the devices from the group and add them again.
- Test only Nest Audio and Chromecast before adding more devices.
- Try a different Cast-enabled app.
- Restart the router, Chromecast, and Nest Audio, then check for firmware updates.
Google’s group-help documentation describes reliability fixes for listed Google speaker types at firmware 3.73 or above; treat that as a documented threshold, not a promise that every device will display that exact version (speaker-group help).
There is an echo or delay
- Cast music to the affected group.
- Stand between the out-of-sync devices and adjust their volumes until they sound approximately equal.
- In Google Home, select the affected device and open its audio or settings controls.
- Adjust the group-delay correction setting.
If the result is worse, return the value to 0 and try another device as the reference (Google’s delay-correction procedure). This can improve synchronized music; it does not make Nest Audio suitable for lip-synced television dialogue.
The TV goes silent after an audio change
If an unsupported surround mode was selected, Google warns that audio may stop. Return the Chromecast sound setting to Auto-detect or Stereo only (Google audio-setting guidance).

The officially supported Google TV speaker setup
For direct TV audio, Google currently documents:
- Google TV Streamer (4K)
- One or two Google Home Speaker (2026) units
- Google Home app, same Wi-Fi, and the same Google Account/Home
From Google TV Streamer
- Open Settings.
- Select Remotes & Accessories.
- Select Google speakers.
- Choose the speakers and select Next.
- Position them near the TV. For two speakers, place the glowing speaker on the left when prompted.
- Optionally configure Spatial Audio.
From Google Home
- Open Google Home and select the TV device tile.
- Tap Use your speakers for TV audio.
- Tap Connect.
- Select the speaker or stereo pair and follow the placement prompts.
This is a Google Home Speaker (2026) path. Do not assume existing Nest Audio units are interchangeable. Spatial Audio also depends on supported content and services (official TV-audio setup).

Choose the right solution for your goal
| Your goal | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Play music on Nest Audio and Chromecast together | Create a Google Home speaker group. |
| Control the TV by voice | Link the Chromecast or TV to Nest Audio. |
| Hear all TV, console, and HDMI audio | Use a soundbar, powered speakers, AV receiver, or the supported Google TV speaker setup. |
| Use two Nest Audio units for music | Create a Nest Audio stereo pair. |
| Use two Google speakers for Google TV Streamer audio | Use two Google Home Speaker (2026) units. |
| Avoid movie delay | Choose a purpose-built TV audio system rather than independent Cast speakers. |
A conventional soundbar is the simplest category for all TV sources, predictable volume, and dialogue synchronization. An AV receiver with passive speakers is more expandable and can provide a center channel and surround formats, but it requires more equipment and setup. Keep Nest Audio for voice control and music if it already suits your home.
Privacy and household controls
Nest Audio remains a voice-assistant microphone beside the TV. Use the physical microphone switch when you want it muted. Voice history, household permissions, visitor access, child settings, and Digital Wellbeing controls still apply; Google documents options for restricting Chromecast voice features (voice-control help; Nest Audio information).
Availability and buying context
Google’s compatible-apps page marks Nest Audio as “No longer available,” so new-stock availability is uncertain (Nest Audio availability signal). Google’s older product page shows a historical US list-price signal of $99.99, not a guaranteed current price (Nest Audio product page).
Google TV Streamer’s US product page has shown a $99.99 list-price signal, but prices and promotions change (Google TV Streamer). Its specifications say a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately (Google TV Streamer specifications). Buying the streamer alone does not convert Nest Audio into supported TV-audio hardware. Google’s current TV-audio instructions name Google Home Speaker (2026); verify its live price before buying.
The Bottom Line
Use Nest Audio with Chromecast for voice control and compatible Cast-enabled speaker-group playback. Do not expect it to become a universal TV speaker. For all television and HDMI audio, choose a soundbar, AV system, or Google’s documented Google TV Streamer plus Google Home Speaker (2026) setup.
