Sometimes—but only as the low-pressure water-supply hose feeding the washer’s inlet, and only if the hose meets that specific washer’s supply requirements. An expandable hose is never a substitute for the pressure-rated hose running from the pump to the spray gun.
Which hose connection do you mean?
A pressure washer uses hoses on two different sides of its pump:
- Inlet (supply) side: A garden hose carries water from the tap to the washer. An expandable hose could serve here if it maintains the required water flow and pressure and fits the washer’s connection.
- Pressure side: The washer’s dedicated high-pressure hose carries water from the pump outlet to the spray gun. Do not use an expandable garden hose here; it is not a replacement for the pressure-rated hose.
GARDENA USA Support says a GARDENA garden hose can supply a pressure washer on the inlet side and cautions, “However, please ensure that it is never used on the pressure side!” Its guidance concerns garden hoses generally; it does not establish compatibility for every expandable hose or washer model. Check the washer’s inlet requirements
Before connecting an expandable hose, consult the manual for your exact washer. Requirements can include minimum inlet pressure and flow, hose inside diameter and maximum length, water temperature, and fitting type. A fitting that attaches successfully does not prove the hose can deliver enough water.

The figures below are examples from specific manufacturer manuals, not universal pressure-washer standards:

Do not assume your washer uses either set of figures. Follow its own manual, including any limits on hose length, temperature, or fittings. Also, the washer’s advertised output PSI is not the pressure requirement for the inlet hose: the garden hose supplies water to the pump; the dedicated pressure hose is on the pump’s outlet side.

How to check whether the hose can supply enough water
- Find the inlet specifications. Look in the washer manual for the required water pressure and flow, hose diameter and maximum length, water temperature, and connection type.
- Measure supply flow using the manual’s method. Check that the water source and hose together meet the washer’s stated requirement. A hose’s ability to expand or connect is not evidence of adequate delivered flow.
- Inspect the hose while water is flowing. Stop if it kinks, collapses, or flattens. Check for supply restrictions and compare the setup with the manual before restarting.
- Watch the washer’s operation. If it pulses or shudders, stop and investigate inadequate supply or another restriction rather than continuing to run it.
Why an undersized or restricted supply matters
Insufficient water supply can make a washer operate improperly and may damage the pump. The John Deere HR-1400E/CM-1400 manual warns that inadequate supply can rapidly wear pump packings, valves, and bearings, shortening pump life; it also identifies pump shuddering and a flattening supply hose as symptoms to check. That warning is specific to the cited washer manual, but it is a reason to take your own model’s supply requirements seriously.

If an expandable hose does not meet the manual’s requirements, compare a replacement by the characteristics that affect inlet supply—not by the washer’s output PSI:
