Yes—one documented shop-made conversion uses a lathe’s compound slide as a hand-operated, reciprocating tool slide to cut internal keyways and splines. It is a specific project, not a standard attachment or a proven fit for every lathe. The report gives no dimensions, operating limits, or measured accuracy, so it is best treated as a design example rather than a ready-to-build plan.
How the lathe-to-shaper conversion works
In the project reported by Hackaday on February 20, 2018, the lathe holds the workpiece while its compound slide carries the cutting tool. The builder removes the compound slide’s lead screw so the slide can move freely, then bolts on a fabricated double-hinged bar. Pushing and pulling the bar moves the slide by hand, making the tool reciprocate across the work.
The tool removes a small amount of metal on each pass. This is a manual mechanism: the featured design does not use a powered shaper drive. The lathe remains useful for holding and positioning the work, while the compound slide supplies the tool’s back-and-forth movement.
What the example is intended to cut
The builder’s stated need was to make internal splines and keyways—features commonly produced with a broach. A cutting tool is mounted on the moving slide to scrape material from inside the workpiece. For spline work, the Hackaday report says an indexing plate can be added to turn the work by controlled increments between cuts.

The report does not provide the indexing plate’s dimensions, an indexing procedure, or a complete tool specification. It does not state the cutting tool’s material, size, or geometry, either. Those details cannot be inferred from the example.
How this differs from a conventional shaper
A conventional shaper holds the work stationary while a powered tool moves across it, generally with a quick-return motion; historical descriptions also identify slotting as one of its uses. That general machine description appears in A. Frederick Collins’s Inventing for Boys. It provides context, not a specification for the lathe conversion: the reported attachment is moved by hand and uses the lathe’s compound slide.

Lathe conversion or broaching?
Broaching is the alternative named in the project report for internal keyways and splines. The conversion instead relies on a shop-made attachment and repeated hand-driven tool passes, with the lathe holding and positioning the work.
